History / Biographical
In summer 1954, Dora Lithwick approached Judge J.C. Horowitz with the idea of building a Home for the accommodation of elderly Jewsish residents in Ottawa. The Ottawa Jewish Home for the Aged was formed as a provisional body in August, 1955 with the purpose of establishing accommodation for elderly Jewish people. Mr. Yale Greenberg was the first director. Hillel Lodge officially opened on October 10, 1965 with 29 beds. Officers 1965-66: President - Mr. Jacie C. Horowitz, QC 1st Vice President - Mr. Samual Berger, QC 2nd Vice President - Mr. Gilbert Greenberg Treasurer - Mr. Abraham Shaffer Assistant Treasurer - Mrs. Norman Wolfe Recording Secretary - Mrs. Sidney Green Corresponding Secretary - Mrs. Benjamin Bean President of Ladies Auxiliary - Mrs. Isaac Beiles The Abraham and Dora Lithwick Chapel was constructed in 1975 to integrate the spiritual and traditional elements within the Home. In 1998, Hillel Lodge received approval to build a new 100 bed Home. That same year, Hillel Lodge was renamed the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge. The new 100 bed facility, located at 10 Nadolny Sachs Private on the Jewish Community Campus in the west end of Ottawa, known as the Joseph and Inez Zelikovitz Long Term Care Centre in the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge, opened in 2000. An additional 21 beds were officially opened in 2011, bringing the total complement of beds to 121. Funding is provided by client fees, the Ottawa Jewish community and the Province of Ontario. Funds are also received from the Home’s Auxiliary, private donation as well as various government grants.
