Scope and Content
This series consists of six boxes of negatives, of which 250 files (1 box) of negatives had been entered on computer as of 1999. Five additional boxes remained to be entered as of this date. Some of the negatives were donatedwithout any identifying information, and therefore cannot be described in detail. Others were numbered rather than identified. A ledger containing negative numbers supplements this part of the collection, and where possible this information was used in cataloguing. However, further details can be gleaned by researchers wishing to use this ledger more extensively. The series contains photos of the agencies under the "umbrella" of AJCS (Allied Jewish Community Services, now known as Federation CJA). A vast number of photos portray the Combined Jewish Appeal, a major function of AJCS. This is a yearly fundraising effort which included the Operation Exodus campaign (to help bring Russian Jews to Montreal). Images in these files include the soliciting of donations by telephone at long tables and missions to Israel. Another large subgroup contains photos of the Jewish Public Library, including the J.I. Segal Awards, annual meetings, the JPL's new home at 5151 Cote St. Catherine Road (1973), a children's program, First Fruits evening, a private reception with Saul Bellow (famous Canadian author), entrance to the library and the rare books collection. There are photos of the Berman Auditorium in the Cummings Building with its wall of framed photos of those who helped found the Jewish Public Library, award ceremonies, financial seminars including men wearing kippot, (skullcaps) and women fashionably dressed. The Jewish Education Council photos depict a professional teachers' day with signs in Hebrew and French, and one of their workshops. There are photos of Hillel House (a student organization) showing the library, an auction, its Russian conference at McGill University, a dance café, and its work on behalf of Soviet Jewry. Other photos depict various events of AJCS, such as fundraising dinners, private receptions, annual meetings, conferences, lectures, portraits of well-known community leaders, Women's Federation and Young Adult Divisions, and Super Sunday (opening of annual fundraising campaign). The proportion of this series that has been processed is described on a file level in the DataEase database, form PCAT, code PC 16

The series consists of 4 boxes which include 328 files of Bar Mitzvahs. The themes of this photo collection include: ritual, tradition, decoration, food, interiors of synagogues, formal dress and music. The morning service, pews, entrance hall, and bimah (platform) from which the boy reads the Torah are depicted. There are many studio portraits of the boy dressed in a suit and tie, with a striped tallit (prayer shawl with fringes) draped over his shoulders, holding a copy in book form of the Torah. Around his neck one often sees a Magen David (Star of David) on a chain. Other portraits depict the boy with his extended family: parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters. There are photos of the rabbi's son at the Beth Ora Synagogue. The negatives also include a few shots of a photographer filming the procedures with an old type camera. The negatives of the birthday party or reception show floral arrangements, lavish decorations, a large Bar Mitzvah cake, and a candle lighting ceremony in which each member of the boy's family is called up to light one candle until 13 candles are lit. There are photos of orchestras such as the Herman Apple Orchestra, a singer/guitarist, the sweet table, table seating place names, blessing and cutting of the challah (twisted bread) which signifies that the meal can begin, many images of the buffet (one in the shape of the Eiffel Tower), and of the boy making a speech. The dancing photos are of conga lines, children dancing with an animator in the centre, and grandmothers dancing with a handkerchief. Depicted also are a group of boys in discussion, the presentation of a Bar Mitzvah book, a grandfather at the head table with a large cigar, and various home receptions. As with the weddings, approximately 1 in 10 Bar Mitzvah envelopes were described in detail for the finding aid. Exceptional quality images from these files were separated into an envelope alongside the others to facilitate access

History / Biographical
When a Jewish boy turns 13, he has a Bar Mitzvah in a synagogue, where he is called up to read a portion of the Torah (Hebrew Bible) in front of the entire congregation. This ceremony inculcates him into the traditions of Judaism, which he is expected to observe throughout his adult life. He now is a "man" who is responsible for his own actions. There are two aspects to the Bar Mitzvah: the solemn religious ceremony and the celebration following, often in the evening.

An estimated 223,000 (8.6 metres) of negatives black and white and colour, 1960-1991, also 2 log books and 1 file of alphabetical log cards. The Jewish community organization negative subjects include AJCS (Allied Jewish Community Services) and CJA (Combined Jewish Appeal); Zionist organizations such as JNF (Jewish National Fund), ORT (Organization for Rehabilitation through Training), and the annual Negev Dinner; the Jewish General Hospital and the Hope and Cope Foundation of the hospital, Orthodox groups such as Chabad (Lubavitch organization), Mizrachi, and Emunah Women; Jewish day schools such as JPPS (Jewish People's and Peretz Schools), Hebrew Academy, Herzliah High School and the Ecole Sépharade; foundations such as Canadian Friends of Ben Gurion University and Claridge, as well as synagogues and Jewish businesses. The negatives depict both events and portraits of associated individuals. Negatives of individuals and families include individual and family portraits, "sweet sixteens" and anniversaries, weddings and Bar Mitzvahs, as well as some Bat Mitzvahs, and brits (circumcisions). Of particular interest in these negatives of family events are shots depicting the interiors of Montreal synagogues as well as aspects of Jewish ritual.Value to Researchers: The study of material culture and modern rituals has increased in recent years. The Canadian Jewish Congress Archives continually receives requests from researchers for photos showing "typical Canadian Jewish life." The Drummond Photo Collection depicts Jewish life from the early 1960s until 1991 with its traditions, rituals and religious practices. Included are men with kippot (skull caps) dancing at weddings, the bride being veiled, signing the marriage contract, Bar Mitzvah boys in synagogue with prayer shawls and siddurs (prayer book), portraits of Jewish community workers, and exteriors and interiors of synagogues. Typical photos include street scenes, the former AJCS building, women in interesting hats and formal dress, rabbis and cantors officiating at various functions, testimonial dinners, political figures, and the role of young adults in the community. These photos are invaluable to filmmakers, authors, journalists, professors, teachers, students and persons working for Jewish community organizations. The collection has historical value not only to the Jewish community but also to the community at- large in its depiction of events and activities unique to the city of Montreal. Given their lack of cultural or historical significance, most of the individual portrait, anniversary, graduation, and identity photo negatives were discarded during the cataloguing process. While negatives can be difficult to view clearly, a technique using the reverse polarity function of the Archives Department scanner allows researchers to view selected negatives as positive images on a computer screen

History / Biographical
Wedding photo by Drummond Photo Inc. Drummond Photo was founded in 1947. The company was pioneered by Sylvia and Syd Feldman in a studio at the Drummond Building, 1117 Ste. Catherine Street, in downtown Montreal. The location of the studio provided the company name. Two years later, the Feldmans shifted down the street to 1419 Drummond, and in 1951, they moved uptown to 5194 Cote des Neiges Road. Their nephew Ruby Shulman joined Drummond Photo in 1956, as they moved once again, to Van Horne Avenue. In 1991 Ruby Shulman merged Drummond Photo with photographer Jacquôt of Photo Jacquôt to form Drummond Jacquôt Inc. The company moved to 305 Decarie North in 1992, and to Dorval on Nov. 1, 1997. Over the years, Drummond Photo has been known throughout the Montreal Jewish community as a company specializing in depicting Jewish life-cycle events (such as weddings and Bar Mitzvahs), and for taking photographs commissioned by Jewish community agencies. In 1967 the company was chosen by the NFB (National Film Board) as the subject of a short film on various Canadian professions. In 1978 AJCS (Allied Jewish Community Services) presented the company with an award "in acknowledgement and recognition of 30 years of service to the AJCS and its predecessor organizations."
Custodial History
In preparation for a move on Nov. 1, 1997, Drummond Jaquot Inc. donated all its existing old photo negatives, as well as the right to reproduce them, to Canadian Jewish Congress National Archives. Negatives older than 1960 were not available, as they had been damaged in a flood in the 1980s and subsequently discarded
Notes
P97/12, PC 16.Finding Aid to the Drummond Photo Collection, Caruso, Katz, et al., Dec. 1999.Drummond Jacquot continues to operate in Montreal and retains all post-1991 negatives. As a general rule, negatives of a non-ritual, personal nature such as passport and graduation photos were discarded.

Other Family series negatives include two circumcision ceremonies, including the party which follows.Additional files in this series feature an Orthodox family group, a man in a shtreimel (hat with fur on a wide brim), the cutting of the peyot (sidelocks) when a boy turns three years of age, a young girl in a hat and an Orthodox mother wearing a wig. History / Biographical
In addition to weddings and Bar Mitzvahs, several other ritual and secular occasions mark stages in the Jewish life cycle. Several of these are documented to a small extent in the Drummond collection.During the 1960s and 1970s, it was customary to make a special party called a "Sweet Sixteen" for a Jewish girl who was turning sixteen, although this was not a religiously required event. This custom has since been replaced by the Bat Mitzvah when a girl turns twelve. This is a religious ceremony which often takes place in a synagogue. Circumcisions are carried out at the age of 8 days for Jewish boys. A party follows the ritual part of the event. At the age of 3 years, boys in very Orthodox families receive their first haircuts. At this time the hair at the corners of the face (the peyot or sidelocks) are left uncut.Jewish pride in family continuity shows in the frequent occurrence of "four generations" portrait groupings in the Drummond collection. A few examples of this genre have been preserved

Scope and Content
The series has several main themes which are relevant to all Jewish weddings. These include ritual, tradition, decoration, food, formal dress, interior of synagogues, and music. The majority of the negatives depict the Ashkenazic (of Eastern European descent) traditions. Some depict the Sephardic tradition (Jews from North Africa and Spain), whose rituals vary from the Ashkenazic. The rituals and traditions depicted in the photos are views of the synagogue and the "chuppah" (wedding canopy), the ring ceremony, and the "kinyan sudar" (exchange of a token object as a symbol of the marriage contract), in which the rabbi gives the groom a handkerchief and the groom gives it back to the rabbi. Another ritual shown is crowning of the parents when their last child ("mezinke ") is getting married. The parents of the mezinke (young lady) are crowned with a wreath of flowers. The photos depict the signing of the marriage contract in the rabbi's study before the formal ceremony takes place, the "badeckung" (veiling of the bride) before the ceremony, and the garter that the bride wears on her leg, the couple in a hotel room with their shoes outside the door, and the procession down the aisle of the matron of honour, bridesmaids, ushers, flower girls dressed in gowns and page boys dressed in tails. The depiction of the orchestras and dances reflect the 1950s and 1960s, when Jewish music was predominant. However, one photo shows the "twist" and one Sephardic photo shows belly dancing. One interesting negative depicts the grandmothers of the couple dancing the first dance. Names of the orchestras are shown, such as Nat Raider and Ely Young. There are interior shots of the Synagogues, such as the Shaar Zion, Chevra Kadisha, Beth El and Beth Ora.Several photos show traditions such as the receiving line, the aisle walk to the "chuppah," the guest list board, the meal and the elaborate sweet table, the wedding cake, the cutting of the "challah" (traditional twisted bread) and the bride feeding the groom. The series includes several photos of the elaborate decorations, such as floral extravaganzas in the aisle and on the tables. Included are the formal dress of the bridal party, such as top hats, tails, morning coats, decorative women's hats, long veils, short dresses puffed behind, and bridal makeup. Other photos show couples smoking cigarettes. The series consists of 9 boxes which include 716 files of Jewish weddings, averaging 100 negatives in each box. It includes a small number of positives and negatives of Jewish-Christian intermarriages as well as a few purely Christian weddings. The latter were retained for comparison purposes. Detailed descriptions for approximately 1 in 10 weddings were prepared for the finding aid. For these files, exceptional quality images were selected and placed in a separate envelope alongside the rest. Highlighted photos include ritual details and style elements illustrative of various periods and traditions

History / Biographical
Jewish weddings incorporate many distinctive traditions, which are reflected in the negatives in this series. However, for the most part, no photos exist in the collection for the moments during which the actual marriage ceremony is taking place under the wedding canopy (chuppah). This absence reflects the social norms of the Jewish community of Montreal at the time, which prohibited flash pictures disturbing a religious ceremony. For other elements of the wedding ceremony, see the Scope and Contents description below
