History / Biographical
Ralph Fonberg's parents came to Ottawa in 1905 under the sponsorship of Oscar Petigorsky. Ralph was born December 30, 1922. He attended Talmud Torah School on George Street and was a member of A.Z.A. He decided to join the army because his good friends Harry Glatt, Abe Morrison, S. Applebaum and Jack Gordon had joined up. He received basic training in Petawawa in 1941 and worked with a camouflage troop of the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was overseas for eight months and returned in 1944. The main activity of the troop was to go out on foot or motor cycle in advance of the front line and establish a position for headquarters. He did this in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Ralph Fonberg recalls a Dr. Talner who came to an A.Z.A. meeting to warn returning soldiers of the perils of sexual contact with "questionable women". He also recalled going to a convention in Toronto and one in Montreal with A.Z.A. He was very active at one time producing plays and skits with other A.Z.A. members. He continued working in theatre with David Slover and others in Ottawa.
