History / Biographical
Born in Poland (probably the city Wroclaw) in 1905, Rachel Lea Kaminsky immigrated to Canada with her son Hertz/Harry sometime in the early 1930s. In 1941, after Hertz's underage enlistment into the army at the age of 16, Rachel intereved and had him transferred to the merchant marines where he perished at sea. While in Montreal, despite modest means, she gave both moral and material support to many local artists and writers. She died on February 24, 1999 in Montreal.
Custodial History
Following her death, this collection was held by Mrs. Kaminsky's friends Miriam Cohen, and then Florence Silverstone, who donated the collection to the archives.
