History / Biographical
Alexander Duffie October 3, 1944 - March 29, 2023 The family is saddened to announce the passing of Alexander Duffie on March 29th, 2023, at the age of 78. In Ottawa with his devoted wife at his side. Alexander Christopher John Duffie Jr. was born on October 3, 1944 to Alexander and Rita (nee McNab) Duffie in Montreal. Alex married the love of his life, Sarah Goldszmidt, in 1972. Together they welcomed two daughters, Andrea in 1976 and Mychele in 1979. In his dedication to providing a good life for his family, Alex completed his post-secondary education at night while working full time gaining a Degree in Economics and his professional accounting designation. Alex and family had the opportunity to live across Canada, taking jobs in Toronto, Calgary, Regina and then Ottawa. Alex retired from the Federal Government in Ottawa at the age of 60, dedicating a considerable amount of his time doing charity work, including treasurer for Habitat for Humanity, King’s Daughters and Sons and helping newcomers to Canada seek employment. Alex loved travelling; him and Sarah had the opportunity to see the world together. They took trips that took them throughout Europe, Asia, Russia, South America and many Caribbean cruises. Most recently in November, Alex took the whole family to Mexico to celebrate his and Sarah’s 50th wedding anniversary. Together they spent winters in their Sunrise Florida condo, where Alex enjoyed playing golf and more recently pickleball. Family was always the most important thing to Alex, and he cherished the time spent with each and every one of them. Alex will be forever missed by his wife Sarah, his daughters Andrea (David) of Regina and Mychele (John) of Ottawa, grandchildren Jordan Heller, Sienna and Alexis Kitcher. Alex also leaves behind his brother Ross Duffie. Alex will be laid to rest at Jewish Memorial Gardens, 2692 Bank St., on Friday March 31st 2023 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Alex’s memory would be appreciated by the family.

Bertram (Bert) Charles Blevis Friday, February 26th, 1932 - Tuesday, January 31st, 2023 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Bertram (Bert) Charles Blevis at Hillel Lodge on January 31, 2023. Bert was born February 26, 1932, in Toronto to Abraham and Kate (Soskin) Blevis. Predeceased by his wife, Rhoda Blevis. He will be lovingly remembered by three children, Lisa Blevis Filion, Barbara Blevis (Shawn Marmer), and Mark Blevis (Andrea Ross), seven grandchildren, Rebecca Filion, Jack Filion (Madyson),Callie Filion, Benjamin Marmer, Kevin Marmer, Lucy Ross-Blevis, and Bayla Ross-Blevis, and one great-grandchild, Caleb Filion. Bert is also survived by his sister Judith (Jack) Brody and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends. He was predeceased by brothers, Earl and Leon. Bert graduated with a PhD in Physics from University College, University of Toronto, at the age of 24. After graduating, he moved to Ottawa and enjoyed a long career with the Canadian Government starting at the Defense Research Board (DRB) and later the Department of Communications. Bert was a pioneer in the Canadian space program and a key figure in the research for the Hermes satellite, the most powerful, non-military communication satellite of its kind; he and his team were awarded an Emmy in 1987 in recognition of their work. He was also involved in the Search and Rescue Satellite programs of COSPAS-SARSAT, which he refers to as one of the most successful and rewarding programs of his career. He sat on the review board for the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (Canadarm). Towards the end of his career with the government, he was the Department of Communications representative on the Transition Team to plan the new Canadian Space Agency. Over the years, Bert often travelled around the world on science and technology missions, having visited all the continents with the exception of Antarctica. After retirement, he and Rhoda enjoyed further travels. Rhoda and Bert were married on April 12, 1959, and set up their home in Ottawa, with a three-year posting in the Washington DC area in the late 1960s. Bert had a great sense of humour, finding laughs in puns and wordplay. Bert took great pride in his role as "Zaidy" (grandfather), doting on his grandchildren, spending lots of time playing and napping with them, taking them to the park, and answering their many questions. Unfortunately, due to Covid travel restrictions and failing health, he was never able to meet his great-grandson. Special thanks to all the wonderful staff at Hillel Lodge for their sincere compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Hillel Lodge, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) or the charity of your choice. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 2 at 1:00 pm at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa. Funeral Service Livestream Link Shiva will be held at the home of Barbara Blevis and Shawn Marmer, 131 Wurtemburg Street, Apt 202 on Thurs. Feb 2, Sun. Feb 5, Mon. Feb 6 and Tues Feb. 7 from 7-9 p.m.

Moishe Smith Wednesday, December 27th, 1950 - Wednesday, January 18th, 2023 It is with profound sadness that the family of Moishe Smith announces his sudden passing in Boca Raton, Florida on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at the age of seventy two. Loved and cherished husband and best friend of Renee Bates. Predeceased by his wonderful parents Inez and Jack Smith. Most loving step-son of Linda Smith. Beloved and adored brother and brother in law of Leslie and the late Maureen, Karla and Joe Morrison, David, Anna Silverman, Leah, Eileen Smith and Fred Guzzo, Nathan and Cindy, Mark and Judy, Leiba and Michael Metz; and brother in law of Monique Bates and David Griffiths, Barkley Bates and Christelle Gauchas. Moishe will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews with whom he shared wonderful relationships, and by the B’nai Brith community around the world. Moishe was a well known restauranteur and caterer in and around Ottawa. From his beginnings slicing smoked meat alongside his late father Jack, Moishe carried on the family traditions with a knife, cutting board, and his famous white chef’s coat. As much as Moishe loved life, he loved the food business. A stalwart leader for Jewish advocacy; Moishe was the youngest ever president of B’nai Brith Canada (1989-1991); and the first non US Citizen to be elected president of B’nai Brith International (2006-2009). History / Biographical
John Gregory “Jack” Moran December 29, 1937 - January 21st, 2023 Jack’s family will be receiving guests on Monday, January 23, 2023, from 7:00-9:00pm at 40 Jack Aaron Drive. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of the most humble, caring and loving man. Comforted to the end at his bedside by his extensive caring family, January 21st, 2023 marked the end of his days to walk amongst us. Born in Smith Falls to loving parents the late John and the late Christine, Jack lived a life of youthful exuberance, antics, and adventure with siblings that have all predeceased him; Dolly (Vernon), Jim (Pat) and Julie (Jack). Originally married to Barb (née Brophy) and blessed to have had two children together, Debi (Derrick) and Tim (Marise). Grateful to have found love again and in the 30th year of marriage with Polly (née Baker). This union came with additional fortunes as Jack had the honour to become the stepfather to Lenora (Evan), Mark (Leigh) and Andrew (Mike). “Papa” or “Poppa Jack” to Kelly, Maggie, Abbi, Tyler, Noah, Arielle and Ben. There was nothing that made him happier than being encircled by the love of family. Loved by numerous nieces and nephews with a sincere gratitude to Patti Moran for all her continuous support to Jack and Polly. Special thanks to Dr. David Aziz of the Ottawa Civic Hospital and his entire team that took such great care to comfort Jack in his final days. He was incredibly fortunate to have this team (with honorable mention to Malik) for treating him like their only patient in the face of their work that is overwhelming and never ending. To honour him appropriately, a Funeral Service for Jack will be held in the Chapel at Jewish Memorial Gardens – Osgoode (6549 Herberts Corners Road) on Monday, January 23, 2023 at 2:00pm. We invite any family or friends to join us to celebrate the life of this man who touched each of our lives in such a unique way.

History / Biographical
Stephen "Steve" Asherman On Thursday, January 12, 2023, Steve left us. Loving husband of Ellen for 54 years. Devoted father of Rena and Andrea. Predeceased by parents William and Evelyn, and brother Allan. Steve was an engineer, designer, and project manager for over forty years in the private and public sectors. He particularly cherished the relationships with his colleagues. On retirement, he said: the work was interesting and challenging, but I'll really miss the people. Steve always got involved. Not content to drop off his girls at their activities, he was a coach, umpire, and organizer. With a close friend, he also served as a Scout leader. He was proud to be one of the founders of the Nepean Ringette Association and served on local, regional, and provincial ringette organizations. As a long time member of the Knights of Pythias, he worked to assist those who needed a helping hand. In his later years, he was active on the Board and Executive of Temple Israel, including two years as President. He enjoyed the challenges of curling and bridge. He doted on his girls, helping where he could, providing advice, and acting as Mr. Handyman. He took great pride in their success and achievements. He shared a beshert life, a meant-to-be life, with Ellen. In the happy times, in the challenging times. Camping trips when the girls were young, travel to Canadian and foreign destinations, winter getaways and tropical cruises, family celebrations, completing each other's thoughts, exchanging knowing glances: all were life memories that Ellen shared with Steve. True soulmates. A quiet leader who got things done. Someone that you could count on. A man of integrity, empathy, and fairness. He strove to make the right decisions, even if sometimes difficult. He recognized the importance of hard work, resilience, and humility. He was truly blessed with his wonderful family, the most important thing in his life. A small circle of close friends completed his life's picture. Until we meet again. A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jewish Memorial Gardens - Osgoode Cemetery (6549 Herberts Corners Road, Greely). For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available by following this link: https://foveo.stream/arbormemorial-kelly-carling/stephen-asherman. Due to Covid-19, there will be no public Shiva. A virtual Shiva may take place on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. If you wish to make a donation, please consider the Ottawa Humane Society. History / Biographical
Georges Emile Royer Born in 1939 in Paris, France, Georges Emile Royer came to Canada following his military service and some years of teaching in August 1965, and became a Canadian in 1972. Son of Charles and Elise Royer, brother of Ghislaine, Henri and Eveline, Georges married Patsy Mallek Spring in 1977 and was proud father of Dan and Sylvie, both of Vancouver, and loving Papi to Alec, Leito and Teela. Georges was a creative and problem-solving type who managed to reinvent himself through a number of careers long before this was fashionable. Graduating from Ottawa U. with a PhD in French linguistics, he became a civil servant, a gentleman hobby farmer, a shop owner, a translator and editor and a property developer in Osgoode village and Metcalfe. For the past twenty years he took up the study of clock repair and became one of the finest experts in the Ottawa area. During that time he brought new life to over 4,500 clocks of all sorts. He almost never had a clock problem that he could not fix. He was a member of the Watch and Clock Collectors club of Ottawa. As well as these activities, Georges was active in the Lions' Clubs of Osgoode and then Ottawa-Vanier. Some of his proudest moments were the creation of the Public Library in Osgoode Village and the soccer field adjacent. He was proud, too, of the friendships that he made, some of which go back more than 50 years. In lieu of flowers, Georges requested that any donations be made to the Ottawa Mission for Men or the Ottawa Food Bank, to help those who did not have the good fortune that followed him for 83 years. Funeral will take place at Jewish Memorial Gardens on Herberts Corners Road in Osgoode at 13:30 on Sunday, January 15. Shiva at home, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
