History / Biographical: Ray Shankman (1940-2016) was born in Toronto, and taught at Lakehead University, Ben Gurion University and for over twenty years at Vanier College, where he taught English and Jewish Studies. He published poetry in various journals and small magazines in the U.S. and Canada, as well as scholarly articles on the Bible. His collection of poetry “For Love of the Wind” was published in 1991 by Medicine Label Press. As a writer, his correspondence includes letters from Allen Ginsberg, Irving Layton, David Solway, and others. He was also actively involved in several countercultural movements in the 1960s, and in many ways, the collection is a window onto this period of Canadian history.

Notes: First journal roughly half poetry, half prose, focusing on feelings of "Jewishness", family concerns including Ranaan's illness, a potential fourth child, and near the end, Ray's father's illness, as well as professional concerns - primarily attempts at poetry and the Jewish authors he is reading for inspiration: Elie Wiesel, Irving Layton, Phillip Roth, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and Leonard Cohen. Many of the dated poetry entries seem to pertain to current feelings or occurances of that day, essentially journaling in verse. Second journal: first half is almost entirely poetry or verse, only a little pertaining to his day to day life. Entire second half devoted to personal life, including Ranaan's poor health and introduction of former student Alison as children's caretaker.
