- I page, double-sided. Folded once horizontally. Document is a letter to the OFT (acronym unknown, possibly the national land registry office) from Gusztáv Weinberger. He is asking for another house and land to replace the one that was owned by his parents, who were deported, and whose property the Communist land distribution committee gave to someone else. Narrative: Donor is Elaine Kalman Naves, daughter of Gusztáv and Anikó Weinberger. Gusztáv returned from the front to learn that 34 members of his extended family, including his wife and small daughter Évike, had been deported to Auschwitz. Only one cousin returned. He remarried Anikó Schwartz and they had two daughters, Elaine and Judith. Despite his efforts, Gusztáv did not receive any compensation for the loss of his family's property during the war. This collection of correspondence was used as part of the research for the following book: Kalman Naves, Elaine. Journey to Vaja: Reconstructing the World of a Hungarian-Jewish Family. - 1 page, double-sided. Folded once horizontally and once vertically. Document is a letter addressed to Gusztáv Weinberger from András Rosenfeld. In it, András gives news of his own family (wife and baby), as well as of his siblings, some of whom survived the war, others who did not. He mentions that he has not seen Gusztáv for ten years. He asks Gusztáv to send news of himself, and he encloses a small photograph of his family. András Rosenfeld was a very good friend of Gusztáv. They did labour service together in the latter part of the war. He was originally from the same hometown as Anikó Schwartz : Beregszász, a town in Czechoslovakia with a large Hungarian minority. András returned to his hometown after the war and was thus separated from his connection with Gusztáv for many years. They corresponded and met in Budapest after the Weinberger family had immigrated to Canada, on a trip back to Hungary. This collection of correspondence was used as part of the research for the following book: Kalman Naves, Elaine. Journey to Vaja: Reconstructing the World of a Hungarian-Jewish Family. - 4 pages, single-spaced. Folded once horizontally and once vertically. Document is a photozopy of aletter from Ferenc Weinberger to Jusztinián György Serédi, Prince Primate of Hungary. The original is located in the Jewish Museum in Budapest. In it, he accuses the priests of the Catholic Church, the members of the Upper Chamber, and the Hungarian landowner class for their anti-Semitism and for inciting the lower classes. Beginning with descriptions of incidents in which Hungarian policemen kicked Jews off a train, and did not let other Jews board a train, the author describes how the Jews have been humiliated and their basic human rights denied to them; how they never questioned the laws against them, even though they seen wrong from Christian, national and humanistic perspectives but have been accepted as legal tenets. The author says he could accept the fact that Jews would have to leave the country, but that they should be given enough time to leave and a more humane treatment. The author concludes the letter saying that he just wants to describe his feelings to Seredi. Narrative: Ferenc (Feri) Weinberger was the younger brother of Gusztáv Weinberger, the donor's father. In 1943, he was sent to the Bor copper mines, in Serbia, as a Jewish forced laborer. In the fall of 1944, the mines were evacuated in the face of the Red Army and Yugoslav partisans; Feri and thousands of others were deported to concentration camps in Germany. He was imprisoned in Flossenberg on November 9, 1944, and was transferred to Commando Hersbruck on December 3 of that same year. He died on December 26, cause of death unknown. This collection of correspondence was used as part of the research for the following book: Kalman Naves, Elaine. Journey to Vaja: Reconstructing the World of a Hungarian-Jewish Family. - 1 page, double-sided, folded vertically. Two holes punched at left. Recto top, addressed to "Feri". Verso, signed "Sándor". Narrative: Donor is Elaine Kalman Naves, daughter of Gustav and Anikó Weinberger. Feri (Ferenc) Weinberger was Gustav's younger brother. Feri died in 1944. From Elaine Kalman Naves' notes: The following letter and card from Sándor Székács, younger brother of Ilona Schwarcz Weinberger, to Feri Weinberger deals mainly with business concerns. Sándor went up to Budapest from Vaja in order to represent the Weinberger-Székács family at a meeting of tobacco farmers (The Rácócky Tanya was the largest producer of tobacco in Hungary, holding a permit to farm tobacco on 150 cadastral yokes. Tobacco growing was a strictly regulated state monopoly; permits were granted by the state to individual farms stipulating the exact acreage allotted to that farm for tobacco.) The proposals put forth at this meeting related to thhe economic plight of tobaccoo farmers reeling from the effects of the Great Depression. Taking advantage of the trip to Budapest, Sándor was to purchase a mini-revolver for Feri Weinberger and to sell some potatoes on the Budapest market. In early spring, potatoes were in great demand in Budapest; P7 -- for 100kgs of potatoes was a very high price.
