- OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, December 16, 2006 Guss, Rose - The death of Rose (Shur) Guss of Rocmaura Nursing Home, Saint John, N.B., wife of the late William Guss, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, December 15th, 2006. Born in Eagle Lake, Maine she was a daughter of the late Rubin and Ida (Rapaport) Shur. Rose was a graduate of Island Falls High School in Maine in 1927. She worked in New York for several years at a Steel Company before moving to Bangor to work at New Central Furniture Company and then with Burdell Clothing Store. Rose and Bill then moved to Calgary, AB, and later to Montreal, QC before moving to Saint John. Rose was an active member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue and the Haddash B'nigh Organization. Rose is survived by her sister, Lena Denis of Bangor, Maine, her brother-in-law Max Fransblowof Saint John, several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Jacob, Morris and Benjamin and her sister, Ruth Shapiro. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (506-634-7424) with a funeral service on Sunday, December 17th, 2006 from Brenan's Chapel at 3 p.m. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Resting at the Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held Sunday with service a 2 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Memorial week well be observed at his late residence, 100 Leinster Street. It has been requested that donations be made in his memory to the Hadassah-Wizo Organization of Canada. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 18, 1987 The death of Mrs. Nellie Hoffman of 100 Leinster Street, widow of Myer Hoffman, occurred on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Esther (Goldschlager) Stern and had lived the greater part of her life in Saint John. She was a member of the Women’s Symphony Orchestra of Saint John, the Congregation of Shaarei Zedek and of the Sisterhood-Hadassah. She is survived by three daughters, Bernice, Mrs. Marvin Shapiro of Kensington, Calif., Phyllis, Mrs. Morton Civen of Seal Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Louise Milota of Saint John; six grandchildren, two sisters, three brothers, and several nephews and nieces. The body is resting at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. - Flying Officer Martin Shapiro of Montreal, Quebec, was reported killed in action after having been listed missing on May 28, 1944, during air operations (R.C.A.F. Casualty List No. 925). He enlisted in the air force in April 1942, graduated as a navigator at Ancienne Lorette, Quebec, and was commissioned in February 1943. He proceeded overseas that same month. At the time of his death, he was serving with the R.C.A.F. Squadron No. 550.
