The Telegraph Journal Thursday, June 24, 1971, page 13 Shoe Business Founder Dies Prominent Saint John businessman Herman Frank Wiezel died Wednesday after a period of failing health. He was 86 years of age. Mr. Wiezel was the founder of Wiezel’s Shoe Store, a venture in which he was later joined by his brother Joseph, and was well known in gardening circles. Born in Tziget, Hungary, son of the late Michael and Deborah (Stern) Wiezel, he spent his early years in Hungary before spending some time in Scotland and finally arriving in Saint John in 1903. In his youth he worked as a farm hand, as a harvester and other capacities, travelling extensively in the United States and Canada. He returned to Saint John to stay in 1907. In 1908 he founded Wiezel’s Shoe Store. With his brother he built the largest shoe business in the Maritimes and Herman Wiezel pioneered the theory of fitting shoes properly, which was a new concept in Canada. His love for farming and gardening was such that he experimented extensively and succeeded in growing plants foreign to this area. He produced grapes and melons and was an exert on native fruit and vegetables. Mr. Wiezel was an ardent mason and was an accomplished linguist, able to speak English, Hungarian, German, Romanian, and Swedish fluently. He also had some knowledge of Polish. He was a member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek. He is survived by his wife the former Anna Stern; two sons, Lawrence Earl, London, England; Clinton M. Wiezel, Saint John, one daughter, Mrs. Samuel Davis, Saint John; two sisters, Miss Doris Wiezel, Saint John; Mrs. Minnie Feldman, New York; and seven grandchildren. The body is resting at the Calvin Funeral Home (Hillsley) 91 Leinster Street, where service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery.
