OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 18, 1938, SB Series 93, p. 90 Jacob Jacobson Dies in 97th Year In his 97th year, Jacob Jacobson, one of the oldest members of the Hebrew community as well as one of the oldest citizens of Saint John, died on Sunday afternoon at the Roger’s Nursing Home, Charlotte Street. A native a Russia, he came to this city 53 years ago and early interested himself in the establishment of a Jewish Synagogue. He was among the most devout members of the Hebrew congregation and had held the office of its president as well as president of the Hebrew burial committee. He was a metal merchant and was one of the first Saint John residents to engage in that enterprise. He had built up his commercial venture into a substantial business. He is survived by one daughter, three sons, one brother, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The daughter is Miss Bessie Jacobson of this city. The sons are Nathan of Halifax, N.S., and Mendal of NewYork and Julius of Westchester, Pa. The brother is Harry Jacobson of Lithuania. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.257. Marcus Dies in Hospital, Passes after Illness of Several Years; Funeral Tomorrow Many friends will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Ethel Marcus, 85, widow of Joseph Marcus, which occurred early this morning at the General Hospital, after an illness of several years. Mrs. Marcus was born in Russia and came to Canada when she was 27. She resided in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan, for a number of years and came to Saint John 51 years ago. Mrs. Marcus was the honorary president of the Daughters of Israel Society. Surviving are four sons, J. D. Marcus, Max Marcus, and H. L. Marcus, all of this city; Dr. Joseph Marcus, Los Angeles, California, and one daughter, Miss Betty Marcus, of Saint John, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held on Friday morning at 11 o’clock from her residence, 42 Carmarthen Street, with interment at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, Fernhill. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, March 9, 1925, Page 5 Funerals The largest Hebrew funeral, ever seen in St. John, was that of Max Ross, who was buried yesterday afternoon from the Park Hotel to the family lot in Fernhill cemetery, attended by a long cortege of members of New Brunswick Lodge No. 1, K. of P.; St. John’s Lodge, F. and A.M., and members of the Hebrew congregation, as well as many citizens. The Pythians held a service at 2:30 o’clock at the hotel, with Oscar Dick, past chancellor, reading the service. Rabbi Mendelblatt and Rabbi Babb conducted the services at the grave. Morris Jacobson, One of City’s First Jewish Residents; Was 73 One of the best known residents of the North End of Saint John - Morris Jacobson - clothing merchant at 617 Main Street for almost half a century – passed away at the General Hospital early last evening following only three days of illness and his death will occasion regret in a wide circle of friends in Saint John. He was 73 years of age and was one of the first Jewish residents here. Born in Latvia, Russia, Mr. Jacobson came to this city 48 years ago, established his clothing business on Main Street and carried on at the same location ever since. During his residence here, he was a member of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation of the Synagogue. He was a great follower of sports. Surviving him are a daughter, Miss Joan Jacobson and seven sons, William and Samuel, who have just arrived in the city from Michigan, David and Murray who have been called here from Halifax; Oscar, Jack, and Barnet. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock from Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street, and interment will be made in the Hebrew Plot in Fernhill Cemetery. Mr. Baxt, who was in his 90th year, was born in Malitopol, Russia, and came to Saint John in September, 1940. He had resided here ever since that time. His wife died on June 8th 1959. Surviving are two sons, Jack J. Baxt, Lancaster and Harry Baxt, Toronto Ont.; One daughter, Mrs. Harry Marcus, Dorchester, Mass, and several nephews and nieces. The funeral was held this afternoon from the vestry of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue with service at 2'oclock. Internment was at Fernhill Cemetery. Funeral from her residence, 591 Main Street, Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Interment in the Hebrew Plot at Fernhill cemetery. The Evening Times Globe / SB Series 93, page 51 Monday, January 10, 1938 Many will learn with regret of the sudden death last night of Mrs. Morris Kashetsky, 591 Main Street, following a heart seizure. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Hyman and Max of the city; one daughter, Mrs. Abe Holtzman, New York; two sisters, Mrs. B. Swetsky and Mrs. S. Kashetsky of this city and two brothers, S. Budovitch, Kitchener, Ontario and A. Budovitch, Chicago. The funeral will be held from her residence tomorrow afternoon, Rev. A. Babb and Rev. M. Funeral today (Friday) from Chamberlain’s Funeral Parlous, at 4:00 p.m. Interment in the Hebrew lot in Fernhill Cemetery. The Evening Times Globe Friday, March 14, 1941, page 11 Phillip Green The funeral of Phillip Green, 8 St. Paul Street, whose death occurred at an early hour this morning at the General Hospital, will be held this afternoon at 4 o’clock from Chanberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East. Services will be conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and Rev. A.Babb and interment will be made in the Hebrew plot at Fernhill Cemetery. Mr. Green who was a son of the late Asa and Rachel Green, formerly of Poland, was born in Poland but had resided in this city for 37 years. He had been ill two months. Surviving, besides his wife, are one daughter, Miss Mildred Green, at home, and three brothers, Maurice, Kitchener, Ont.; Samuel, New York; and Robert, at home. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, March 17, 1939, Page SB 93, page 213 Mrs. Rosenthal Dies in Hospital After an illness of two weeks the death occurred in the General Hospital yesterday of Mrs. Miriam Rosenthal, 392 Haymarket Square, widow of Jacob Rosenthal. She was born in Russia but had made her home in Saint John for the last 35 years. Mrs. Rosenthal leaves to mourn one daughter, Miss Jean, R.N. of Hartford, Connecticut; two sons, Louis, Hartford and Jack, Digby, N.S., and three grandchildren. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from Chamberlain's Funeral Home, 23 Paradise Row with Rev. M. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb officiating. Interment was made in the Hebrew lot at Fernhill Cemetery. The Evening Times Globe Saturday, March 4, 1939 The condition of Mrs. Miriam Rosenthal, proprietress of a grocery store at 382 Haymarket Square, was stated at the General Hospital today to be still 'serious'. The elderly woman was found lying on the floor of her home, adjoining the store, last night, by police when neighbours feared something had happened when the store remained locked from inside yesterday. She was unconscious when found by police and was taken to the hospital. Mrs. Rosenthal's daughter, a registered nurse of Hartford, Conn., and a son, Jack, living in Digby, N.S. were notified. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 27, 1935, section 2 A. Fine, Shoe Dealer, Passes At His Home Friends throughout the province will learn with regret of the death of A. Fine, which occurred early this morning at his residence, 231 Union Street. Well known for many years as a shoe merchant, Mr. Fine, who was about 60 years old, maintained his place of business of Union Street near his home. He was a member of Benjamin Lodge, No. 39, F. and A.M., of Andover, where he resided in his earlier years. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Miss Edith Fine, at home, and a brother Charles Fine of New York. Mr. Fine’s brother was called to Saint John some days ago when his illness became severe. Among other old friends of Mr. Fine who were present when death came were J. Brody, Woodstock and H. Kovan, Grand Falls. The funeral service will be held at his residence Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. A. Babb officiating. Complete arrangements have not been made. Evening Times Globe Monday, April 29, 1935, page 13 A large number of business, fraternal and personal friends attended the funeral of A. Fine from his late residence, 231 Union Street, yesterday afternoon. Members of the Masonic Order in the city held a service at the house. They marched to Haymarket Square, providing a guard of honour. Many walks of life were represented at the funeral, including members of Ezra Lodge of Habonim and the Jewish congregation. The two local rabbis, Rev. M. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb, officiated, the former at the house and the latter at the grave in Fernhill Cemetery, where interment took place. Friends of the family were pallbearers. Among relatives present from outside the city were a brother, Charles Fine of Brooklyn, N.Y., H. Kovan, Grand Falls and J. Brody, Woodstock. There was a profusion of floral offerings, including No. 39 F. and A.M., of which Mr. Fine was a member. Out of town business associates also sent floral pieces.
