Evening Times Globe Monday, March 25, 1991 Bad luck cited in skier's death Lower Hainsville- a Saint John schoolteacher who died on a ski slope here Saturday was an experienced skier who was simply a victim of 'bad luck' says the hill's general manager. Tammy Beverly Fallon, 46, of Pelton Road was killed when she struck a tree while skiing down one of the hill's trails Saturday afternoon. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton. The death is the first in the 20-year history of Crabbe Mountain Winter Park, 48 kilometers north of Fredericton. Park general manager Gary Melanson said the fatality has sent shock waves through park staff and regular skiers at the hill. 'These things can happen in skiing and you do a lot to prepare for it, but no matter what, you're never really ready for it,' Melanson said. The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on the Tippacanoe trail, an advanced slope on the far side of the mountain. The weather was clear and conditions on the slope were good at the time of the accident, Melanson said. Melanson said Fallon was no stranger to Tippacanoe or any other slope at Crabbe - she was a season pass-holder and had been a regular skier at the mountain for almost 20 years. He described her as 'an excellent and very experienced' skier. Fallon and another woman were skiing down the slope together, and both women turned to cut down a side trail. At that moment, they accidentally 'bumped against one another' pushing Fallon off the slope and directly into a tree at the side of the trail. 'It was more of a bad luck accident than anything,' Melanson said. 'If it had happened two seconds earlier or later, she would have missed the tree entirely.' Help was quick to arrive on the scene. A member of the Canadian Ski Patrol arrived within two minutes and radioed for medical help. A doctor who belongs to the patrol was at the top of the hill and skied to the scene within five minutes of the accident. 'The Ski Patrol guys did just exactly what they were supposed to do,' he said 'But there wasn't very much they could do.' RCMP and an ambulance arrived at the ski hill within 20 minutes, and Fallon's body was taken to the Chalmers Hospital where an autopsy was performed. A spokesman for the RCMP's Fredericton detachment said the accident is still under investigation. Police also said no decision has been made on the coroner's inquest. 'Everyone here is just in shock over this,' Melanson said. Born at Truro, N.S., Mrs. Fallon was the daughter of Morton D. and Sylvia (Smith) Ross, of Truro. She has lived in Saint John since 1971. She was a schoolteacher and taught grade 4 at the Glen Falls Elementary School. She served on the board of the Children's Unicorn Theatre. She was a member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek, and served on the board of directors. Surviving besides her parents and husband John are one daughter, Robbyn Shoshoana, at home; one brother, Ellis of Truro; one sister, Elaine Valentine of Truro. A son, Kevin, died before her. The body is resting at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley) 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Tammy and Kevin Fallon Memorial Fund, in care of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, by telephoning 648-9568. The family has requested no visiting at the funeral home.
