The 96 year-old entrepreneur and philanthropist was born in Odessa, Russia, on August 1, 1905, the eldest son of Marcus and Sarah Calp. In 1933, Abe Calp established Calps Ltd., a major department store, which for more than 60 years, served Saint John from its Charlotte Street location. Abe had joined the Saint John Rotary Club in 1942, and served as the deputy chairman of the Rotary Admiral Beatty Building Fund. Mr. Calp had been honored by the Rotary Club in many ways, as he was made a 'Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary International Foundation', and was awarded the Canada 125 medal. Abe was a chartered member and past president of the New Brunswick Division of the Canadian Arthritis Society and in 1973, was honoured by Goveneur General Roland Michener with a life membership to the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society. He became a director of the Saint John Boys & Girls Club, was founding chairman of the Saint John Boys & Girls Club Endowment Fund, and, in 1974, he was the campaign chairman of the Boys & Girls Club Rebuilding Fund, raising more than $1 million to repair its fire-damaged building. In his lifetime, he was honoured as both a Life Member and a Master Builder of the Saint John Boys & Girls Club, and was a member of the Board of the National Boys & Girls Club of Canada. In 1957, he was appointed to the first Urban Renewal Commission in Canada, and was an organizer and later chairman of Fundy Linen Services Inc.. He was a counsellor of the Saint John Board of Trade, a director of the Saint John Community Concert Association, the Music Festival, and the Symphony Orchestra. He served for 25 years as a member of the Atlantic Exhibition Association. Mr. Calp became president of the Saint John Merchants Association and the Associated Stores of Canada. He was a charter member of the Retail Council of Canada, serving as vice-president and director for 22 years. In 1985, his peers in the retail industry honoured him with the Distinguished Canadian Retailer Award. He was vice-president of the Zionist Organization of Canada, president of the Saint John Ezra Lodge, Zionist Order of Habonim and chairman of the United Jewish Appeal and State of Israel Bond Campaign. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, March 23, 2006 It is with profound sadness that the family of Edgar R. Cohen announces his passing on Monday, March 20, 2006. With his beloved family at his bedside he died with the dignity and quiet honour that marked his life. Born the son of the later Meyer and Bessie (Levine) Cohen he lived all of his 81 years in the city of his birth, Saint John. Proud of his heritage, his city and his province, Ed was a graduate of Saint John High School, attended Mount Allison University and the Saint John Business School. Ed was most known as the proprietor of Hoffman's Ltd., on Main Street where he carried on business for more than 50 years. A life long member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, Ed was a life associate of the Hadassah-Wizo Organization of Canada, and a member of the B'nai B'rith. A life long member of the PC Association of Canada, politics was his favourite pasttime. Ed was a Mason of the Grand Lodge and served on the Saint John Parking Commission; he was an inaugural member of the Board of Directors of the Saint John Port Commission, a Trustee of St. Joseph's Hospital and a member of the Northwest Commercial Traveler's Association. Ed's greatest joy in life was his family which he held most dear. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Erminie (Bernstein); his children, Cathy (Bill Thompson), Lee, Shelley (Barry Cohen-Thorley); and his prized grandson, Micah Tait. His sister Jennie Cohen, several nieces and nephews, and Lenora Garnett, his devoted friend of 40 years also survive him. Ed was pre-deceased by his brother Israel Cohen. Funeral services will be held at Brenan's Bay View Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 1461 Manawagonish Road at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2006, followed by interment at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery (Fernhill Cemetery). Following the funeral Shiva will be held at the family home where friends will be welcome anytime after 2:00 p.m. during the week. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to ONE Change Inc. (the Old North End Community Project) c/o 195 Victoria Street, Saint John, N B, E2K 1L7 or the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 2006.43.21 / JM 2006.43.22.
