- OBITUARIES: Daily Telegraph, April 10, 1922, microfilm # 132 Sudden Death of B.L. Amdur Leader Among Hebrews of This City, Successful Business Man and Former Rabbi Has Passed Away After Short Illness. B.L. Amdur died suddenly at the St. John Infirmary yesterday morning at 8 o’clock after having been ill for three days with pneumonia. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son and four daughters. The children are: Belle, Isadore, Mrs. I. Sydney Isaacs, Ada and Sarah. Mrs. Louis Dautch, of Buffalo, is a sister. The news of the death of Mr. Amdur is a great shock to the community, as comparatively few of his many friends knew of his illness. The late Mr. Amdur was born in Dvinsk, Russia, fifty years ago and was educated in the Riga schools. Twenty-two years ago, he came to America, having accepted the call to officiate as rabbi at the Jefferson street Temple, Buffalo (N.Y.). There he ministered for fifteen years and afterwards was Rabbi at the Bnai Jacob synagogue of Hamilton (Ont.). He then came to this city and was rabbi at the Hazen avenue Synagogue until 1912 when he retired from the ministry and entered business life. He was a talented musician of exceptional ability and conducted a music store in Union street until 1916 with considerable success. Mr. Amdur also was active in real estate ventures and carried on extensive developments at Eastmount, having erected several houses there. In 1916, he initiated a business which, in a comparatively few years, he developed with remarkable success in that from the time of his opening of his first dry goods store in West St. John, he expanded his new business so rapidly that the expansion took place at the rate of one new store opened every year until finally he was operating two stores in West St. John, and two in the city, all located at strategic points in the commercial centre, and all prospering. Lately he adopted the business policy of consolidation and concentration and leaves as a great example of business achievement two large stores in the heart of the city. Probably, in recent years, Mr. Amdur's business success has not been excelled by any other institution in this city. In private life, the late Mr. Amdur's noble character, intimate knowledge of politics, art and music and his genial, kindly manner was an inspiration to his family and won for him in the outside world a wide circle of friends, not only in St. John, but also in other parts of Canada and the eastern parts of the United States. He was held in high regard by the Canadian Jews, being recognized as one of the outstanding leaders and frequently represented this section in national Jewish conferences. Locally he was idolized by his co-religionists and at the time of his death was president of the Jewish congregation of St. John. He was a member of Carleton Union; F& A.M., and also member of the L.O.O.F. The funeral will take place from his late residence, 85 Elliott Row, at 3 o'clock this afternoon to the Carleton street synagogue, where services will be conducted by Rabbi Weiner. Amdur, died suddenly after a short illness, at an early hour this morning in the Public Hospital. Mrs. Amdur was for many years a well known resident of this city, and her demise came as a great shock to her many friends. She possessed an exceptionally gentle and kind nature that endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. She took an active interest in charitable and philanthropic organizations in St. John and her loss will be keenly felt by a large community. Lionel (Lee) April born February 2, 1917, in Lithuania, son of Michael and Lily (nee Leopold) passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 1993, at Toronto General Hospital, following a courageous struggle after several years of illness. Lionel immigrated to Canada as a young child with his parents, settling in Montreal. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 in Toronto, serving in active combat in Europe and North Africa as a decorated flying officer earning the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Following his Honourable Discharge in 1945, Lionel joined Garson-Odeon Theatres in Saint John, New Brunswick, where he was Regional manager until 1959. From 1960 he was owner/operator of Robbins Drug Store in Saint John until selling the business in 1971. From that time, he concentrated his efforts on the development and management of a residential real estate portfolio. Due to poor health, he retired in 1986 and moved to Toronto. Lionel was an active member of the business community in Saint John and was a former Commissioner of the Fundy Region Development Commission and a former Co-Chairman of the United Fund of Greater Saint John. He worked diligently for the Saint John Jewish Community and served on the board of Congregation Shaarei Zedek (Saint John) for many years, where he retained life-long membership. He also worked actively for many Jewish organizations. Lionel is survived by his wife, Freda Lee April (nee Garson), daughter Lorie Beth (Toronto), son Michael (Halifax, N.S.), and two grandchildren. Funeral service and interment took place on Friday, August 27, 1993, in Saint John. Shivah is being observed at the family residence in Toronto. Charitable donations may be made to the Canadian Friends of The Hebrew University or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. - OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 17 1964 Dies Following Lengthy Illness Mrs. Clara Bernstein, wife of M. S. Bernstein of Saint John, died last evening in St. Joseph's Hospital, following a lengthy illness Born in Camden, N. J., May 15, 1902, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Goldfeather, and had resided in Saint John since 1903. Mrs. Bernstein was a life-long member of the Shaarei Zedek congregation. She was an active member of the Sisterhood of the synagogue and the Hadassah. She was also actively associated with the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music, the Ladies' Aid Society of the Saint John General Hospital, and with many charitable organizations. Besides her husband, Mrs. Bernstein is survived by a son, Mortimer, and a daughter, Mrs. E. R. Cohen, both of Saint John; two sister, Mrs. H. R. Cornblat, Saint John, and Mrs. S. B. Wampol, Chicago, Ill., one brother, Bernard Goldfeather, Saint John, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue at 2:30 p.m. today. Florida, on Feb. 25, 1967, Mitchell Bernstein, survived by one son, one daughter, two brothers, four sisters, five grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces. The body will arrive by plane Monday morning, and will rest at the vestry of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, Carleton Street, from where the funeral will be held Monday afternoon with service at 3 o’clock. Interment in Fernhill Cemetery. Evening Times Globe February 1967 Theatre Pioneer And Active Citizen The passing of Mr. Mitchell S. Bernstein breaks one of the few remaining links with the early days of the motion picture business in this part of Canada. The B. and L. Theatre Circuit, in which he had been a partner since 1928, came into being at a time when history-making developments were taking place in the motion picture world with the approach of the 'talkies'. The company, recognizing the prospect that the silent era would soon fade into oblivion, pioneered in the introduction of talking pictures in this region and continued to grow with the advance of the new entertainment medium. Mr. Bernstein was well known also in the real estate and apartment field in Saint John. But despite the extent of his business activities he found time to take a prominent role in a great many aspects of the work of the Shaarei-Zedek Congregation, the Zionist Organization of Canada, and the Israel bond and appeal campaigns. These constructive efforts were recognized in various honors Mr. Bernstein was accorded both in Canada and in Israel. His leadership will be missed in this community, and many friends of all faiths will be saddened by his death. Bernstein, Mitchell S. Evening Times Globe February 1967 Community Mourns Mitchell Bernstein Mitchell S, Bernstein, a prominent local business man, passed away in hospital in Miami Beach, Florida, Saturday afternoon, following a brief illness. He was born in New York City, in 1895, the son of the late Louis and Fanny Bernstein. He had been a resident of Saint John for over 50 years. Mr. Bernstein founded the Mitchell Apartments and also was one of the principal owners of the Latour Terrace Buildings, on Union Street. Mitchell Street, in the city, was named after him. In partnership with Joseph Lieberman, he formed the B and L Theatre Circuit, which covers the Maritime Provinces and Maine, with its head office in Saint John. This partnership, which was formed in June 1928, nearly 40 years ago, was the first company to introduce talking pictures to the area, with the partners using their own equipment on the road. Mr. Bernstein was married to the late Clara Goldfeather who passed away in 1962. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. E. R. Cohen (Erminie), one son Mortimer L., both of Saint John, five grandchildren; two brothers, Moe Bernstein, New York City, Willie Bernstein, Los Angeles; four sisters, Mrs. Bessie Margolian, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Sam Mollet, Mrs. Sam Rosenberg, and Miss Zelda Bernstein, all of Los Angeles, and several nephews and nieces. Active in the community projects, he was a past president of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation, as well as holding many other positions with the congregation. An ardent sportsman, he was at one time a member of the Saint John Boxing Commission. He was a chartered member of B’nai Birth, the Motion Picture Pioneers, Variety Club of Toronto, and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 17, Halifax. He was an honorary vice president of the Zionist Organization of Canada. In May 1954, the Saint John Jewish Community honored him with a testimonial and Negev Dinner. A grove of trees known as 'The Mitchell Sydney Bernstein Grove' in Israel bears tribute to his devotion and services to the Jewish Community. He was the first chairman of the Israel Bond Campaign, with Mitchell Franklin. He is a past president of the YMHA, and produced many shows, which were very successful and held in the vestry of the synagogue. He also chaired many United Israel Appeal campaigns, as well as many other community organization dinners. Bernstein, Mitchell S. The funeral service will be held today at 3 o’clock conducted by Rabbi A. Feffer, from the Congregation Shaarei Zedek vestry. The body is expected to arrive this morning at 10:45 o’clock. Interment will take place in the Congregation Shaarei Zedek Cemetery at Fernhill. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, June 22, 2009 The death of Delores R. (Debbie) Bloom, of Saint John, wife of the late Bernard Bloom, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, June 20, 2009. Born in Letete, NB she was a daughter of the late Burpee and Jennie (Matthews) Tucker. Debbie spent the greater part of her life in Saint John were she attended the Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1950. She was involved in the Simonds Lion Club for many years, Hadassah-Wizo Sisterhood, Shomer Club, Chevra Kadisha longtime member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek. Debbie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by a sister Marlene Olsen and 2 brothers Burpee Tucker Jr. and Arthur Tucker. She is survived by 1 daughter Bryna L. Burtch of Ottawa Ontario, 1 granddaughter Kendal Burtch of Ottawa, Ontario 1 son Phillip A. Bloom (Diane) of Saint John, 1 sister Shirley Lieberman (Mark Fisher) of Kingston, Ontario, 2 sisters in law, Pauline Tucker of Fredericton, NB, and Betty Fineberg (Elliott) of Halifax, Nova Scotia and several nieces and nephews. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. - OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, November 22, 1966 Eli Boyaner Widely Mourned A leading Saint John scouting official, Eli Boyaner, well known locally and internationally, died unexpectedly Monday night in Saint John General Hospital. Ill for the last few weeks, he had entered hospital on Sunday. A man of tremendous energy and ability in organization; Mr. Boyaner had given of these freely to scouting, in which he had been active for 43 years. At the time of his death, he was Provincial President of the New Brunswick Branch Boy Scout of Canada. Mr. Boyaner had served the Boy Scout movement in city, province, and nationally. He was Provincial Commissioner for 18 years, and earlier for 10 years, was assistant Provincial Commissioner. He was a member of the national Council, as chairman of the program committee for many years, and had been provincial president since 1963. In these various offices, he attended national and international conferences and Jamborees in such distant places as Malaya and Greece and India where he had an interview with the late Prime Minister Nehru. In 1955, Mr. Boyaner was only the second Canadian ever to be named to the International Committee, the controlling body for the Boy Scouts in the world. His six-year term ended in 1956. Pay Tribute The present provincial commissioner of Boy Scouts, Dr. Alan S. Hopper, Moncton, said this morning; 'I have had been associated with Mr. Boyaner almost 40 years in the Scout Movement, and benefitted much from his advice and guidance. Not only Canada, but International Scouting has lost a great man. My first association was when I was a young scout leader in St. Martins, and we have continued as friends in the movement ever since.' And from H. C., Northcott, provincial Scout executive, Saint John, came this tribute: 'One of the most outstanding features of Eli Boyaner was his thoughtfulness for others. No achievement, celebration or event on the part of any person in scouting went unnoticed. Tact, kindness and diplomacy were personified in Mr. Boyaner. Besides his many other activities, his contribution to the youth of this city, this province, and this nation was of inestimable value, and his presence will be sorely missed.' His interests were not limited to scouting. Always active on the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, he served for eight years as president of the Congregation, an executive office demanding time and thought. Boyaner, Dr. Eli The Red Cross Society benefitted from his interest in the work, and he served in many capacities, both local and provincial representatives on the national executive. For his work in promoting the Rotary Boys and Girls Club as one of the leaders in the founding by the Rotary Club, he was presented with a silver Keystone Award by the national president of the Boys Clubs of Canada. He had the distinction of being the first person to receive an honorary doctor of optometry degree from the college of Optometry of Ontario. He was a founder of the New Brunswick Optometrical Society of which he was the first secretary and became the president in 1929. He has been a member of the National Council Association of Optometrists. Mr. Boyaner is survived by his wife, the former Esther Blitz, one son, Dr. Don Boyaner of Montreal; one daughter Mrs. Shirley Segal of Montreal; six grandchildren, one brother, Louis Boyaner, Saint John; two sisters, Mrs. Norman Smith, Saint John; and Mrs. Maurice Elman, Saint John; and several nieces and nephews. The body is resting in the vestry of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, 76 Carleton Street, where service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment will be in Fernhill Cemetery. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, June 17, 1925 A. Budovitch Dies At His Home Here The death of A. Budovitch, member of the Hebrew community and an ardent student of Hebrew lore and traditions, died at his residence, 8 Ann Street on Monday evening at 8 o’clock. He leaves to mourn three daughters, Mrs. M. Kashetsky, Mrs. S. Kashetsky, and Mrs. B. Swetsky of Saint John and two sons, Samuel of Saint John and Solomon of Chicago. Mrs. Budovitch died two years ago. The funeral was held yesterday with service conducted by Rabbi Babb. Mr. Budovitch was born in Klezk, province of Minsk, Russia. He had entered into the life of the Hebrew community here with zest and was considered an authority on the history of his people. Many assembled at the funeral to pay a last tribute of respect.
