Formerly of Poland, Had Been Proprieter of Store Here in Saint John Numerous friends will learn with regret of the death of Samuel Gilbert, 47 Prince Edward Street, which occurred at the Saint John General Hospital at an early hour this morning. He was the son of the late Lipman and Leah Gilbert, and was born at Lpne, Poland, coming to New Brunswick 36 years ago. Mr. Gilbert was a well known citizen, many years a proprietor of a dry goods establishment on Prince William Street. He was a member of the Hebrew Congregation of Shaarei Zedek in which he was an active member. He is survived besides his wife by two daughters, Jean and Rita at home; six sisters, Miss J. Webber of this city, Mrs. M. Miller of Halifax and four sisters in Poland and two brothers, Leo of Saint John and James in Poland. The funeral was held this afternoon from Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East. The service was conducted by Rev. A. Babb and Rev. M. Beshkin at 2:30 o’clock. Interment as made in the Hebrew plot in Fernhill Cemetery. Zlatin, Halifax, the Misses Mary, Helen, and Ida, all at home; two sons, Morris and David, at home, both recently discharged from the Navy; one sister, Mrs. I. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, July 17, 1942, SB 95, page 156 Mrs. Nathan Meltzer Dies Early Today Many friends will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Mary Meltzer, wife of Nathan Meltzer, 101 Paradise Row, which occurred in the General Hospital early this morning after an illness of several months. Mrs. Meltzer was born in Lithuania, a daughter of the late Charles and Helen Hains, but has resided in Saint John for over 30 years where she enjoyed the friendship of a wide circle. She was particularly well known through her interests in the Newfield Millinary Store, and was a devout member of the Hebrew congregation as well as being active in many Hebrew Societies. Mrs. Meltzer held membership in the Daughters of Israel, the Senior Hadassah Society and the Sisterhood of the Congregation of the Shaarei Zedek. She was also a member of the Local Council of Women and of the Red Cross Society. She is survived by her husband, Nathan Meltzer; two daughters, Mrs.Samuel Goldstein, Montreal, and Miss Diana Meltzer, at home; three sons, A. I. Meltzer, Worchester, Mass., William and Mendel of Saint John; one sister, Mrs. Morris Guss, Saint John; two brothers, Rev. A. M. A. Hains, Waterville, Me., and H.Hains, Moncton. The funeral will be held today from her residence at 4:30 p.m. and interment will be made in the Hebrew Plot in Fernhill Cemetery. The service will be conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and Rev A. Babb. He leaves, also, two brothers and two sisters. The funeral was held Sunday and the interment was made in the Jewish cemetery. About a week ago he contracted a severe cold which developed into influenza and pneumonia. Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Brager, he leaves two brothers and two sisters all at home to mourn their loss. The funeral was held yesterday and interment was made in the Jewish Cemetery. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, July 6, 1955 Mrs. Alice Lyone Dies in Hospital The death of Mrs. Alice Lyone occurred suddenly yesterday evening at the Saint John General Hospital. Mrs. Lyone was the widow of Albert Lyone. Born in Saint John, she had been a resident of the city for the past 12 years after being a resident of Vancouver for 20 years. An active member of the Henrietta Szold Chapter of Hadassah, Mrs. Lyone was also a member of the Sisterhood of the Shaarei Zedek congregation. She is survived by two brothers, Mr. Harry C. Green, Saint John and S. Hart Green, Q.C., Winnipeg, Manitoba; one sister, Mrs. I.A. Wyner, New York and several nieces and nephews. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, July 5, 1952, Page 5 Ernest Gilbert, long associated with Duval’s Ltd., 15-17 Waterloo Street died at an early hour in the General Hospital on Saturday morning and his death will be learned with deep regret by a host of friends and business acquaintances. Mr. Gilbert had been in failing health for some time. He was 61 years of age. Mr. Gilbert was born in Montreal and was a son of the late Rachel and Harris (Aaronson) Gilbert. [He was a resident] of Saint John for about 50 years. He resided at 80 Princess Street and was an active member of the congregation Shaarei Zedek. A veteran of the first World War, Mr. Gilbert served overseas with the Royal Flying Corps. Upon his return he joined the staff of Duval’s and continued in his employ until his death. He was a member of the Saint John Branch No. 14, of the Canadian Legion. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Elizabeth McGinnis of Fredericton; two sisters, Mrs. J. P. Paikowsky and Miss Annie Gilbert of Saint John, as well as several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held yesterday at noon from the residence. The service was conducted by Rev. P. H. Green and Rev. E. Slotki. Relatives and friends were pallbearers. Interment was in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Among the profusion the floral tributes were from the Brantford Roofing (Maritimes) Ltd; Martin Senour Co. Ltd; Management and staff of Duval’s and officers and members of Canadian Legion.
