OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, November 5, 2002 The death of Mrs. Bertha Rubin (Goldstein) Master, of Saint John, NB, wife of the late Robert Master, occurred peacefully at her residence, on Monday, November 4, 2002. Born in Saint John,, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Rose (Rubin) Goldstein. Bertha was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She had formerly been employed at Princess Dress Shop on Union Street, Jacobson’s Furniture Store and had retired from Dalmy’s Ladies Clothing Store on Charlotte Street following many years of employment. She was a volunteer at the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, and was a member of the Toastmaster’s Women’s Group and the Hadassah Wizo. Bertha was very active at the Senior Citizen’s Centre at the Saint John City Market and had a large circle of friends, which encompassed many age groups. She is survived by three nieces, Janet Stern (Alan) of Halifax, Roslyn Avery of Toronto, and Susan Shaver of Stouffville, ON, one nephew, Michael Goldstein (Allison) of Mississauga, ON, a friend, Darlene Woodford, as well as numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, her parents, and two brothers, Ben and Murice Goldstein. The funeral servie will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506) 634-7424. Interment will take place at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, (Fernhill Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Jewish Historical Museum or the Church of Saint John and St. Stephen Nursing Home would be appreciated. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 2003.56.31. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, April 15, 2000 Samuel (Sam) Cohen 82, Saint John, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2000, following a long illness and period of failing health. Born in Halifax, he was a life-long resident of Saint John. He was the son of the late Jack and Alice Cohen and was predeceased by his wife Bessy and his brother Joe. He is survived by his brother Hy of Boston, Mass., his son and daughter-in-law Mal and Marlies of Dartmouth, N.S., daughter and son-in-law Miriam and George Watkins of Hampton, N.B. and grandchildren Reuven of Halifax/New York, Tova of Dartmouth and Yael of Toronto. Sam was a member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek and active in various community activities including the Shomer Club and volunteer at the Jewish Museum. Among his various work positions, he is best remembered for his position as Manager of Dalmy’s. A life-long musician, Sam’s melodic saxophone and clarinet stylings lit up the community and dance floors for more than two generations. The funeral will be held at A.W. Cavanagh Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street, 634-1712, on Sunday, April 16, at 2 p.m. The family of Mr. Cohen will be receiving visitors during the day of Monday, April 17, and services will be said during the morning and evening. In lieu of flowers, donation to the Saint John Jewish Museum, St. Joseph’s Hospital or the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Interment in Green-Hart Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rabbi L. Medjuck of Moncton. Interment was in the family plot. Mrs. Lapert died at the residence of a daughter, Mrs. Fruma Jockelman, 9 Pearl Street, Moncton, after a period of failing health. She was 94 years of age and had been residing in Moncton for the last seven years. Born in Russia, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kashetsky, she has been a resident of Saint John the greater part of her life. Surviving are four sons, Morris Lampert, Boston, Massachusetts, Israel Lampert, Cornwall, Ontario; Louis and Samuel Lampert of Moncton; two daughters, Mrs. David Carleton, San Francisco, California, Mrs. Jockelman, Moncton; two brothers, Morris Kashetsky and Samuel Kashetsky, both of Saint John, 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, September 1, 1948 Koven - Suddenly at the Saint John General Hospital, on Aug. 31, 1948, Rose Koven, wife of Morris Koven of Coldbrook, Saint John county and daughter of the late Samuel Goler of Newark N.J., survived by her husband, two daughters, two sons, one sister and two brothers. Resting at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. The Evening Times Globe Tuesday, August 30, 1948, page 6 Death Is Shock To Many Friends The sudden passing of Mrs. Rose Koven, wife of Morris Koven, Coldbrook, will be a shock to her many friends. Mrs. Koven died this morning in the Saint John General Hospital after suffering a heart attack. She had been in apparently good health on Monday and had carried out her household duties as usual. Mrs. Koven was born in Russia, a daughter of Mrs. Sarah and the late Samuel Goler. She had lived in Saint John for the last 26 years and was an active member of the Hebrew congregation as well as a popular member of the community. Surviving besides her husband, a well-known merchant, are two daughters Mrs. Phil Kaplan, Newark, N.J., and Miss Ann, at home; two sons, Joseph and Samuel, Saint John; her mother in Newark N.J., one sister, Mrs. Lena Kominsky, New York, and two brothers, Samuel and Isadore, Jersey City, N.J. The body is resting at Chamberlains Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday with service at 2:30 o’clock. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, September 7, 2005 Selby, Sanford Isaac - The death of Sanford 'Sandy' Selby, of Germain Street, Saint John, N.B. occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday, September 6, 2005. Born in Saint John, he was a son of the late Lewis and Bessie (Ware) Selby. Sandy attended Princess Anne and Prince Charles School, before working at the family business, Princess Dress Shop on Union Street, and later was employed for the City of Saint John for 30 years. He was a member of the Adanac Club, Outside Workers Union Local #18 and was also a longtime member of Congregation Shaarei Zedek. Sandy was also involved with the High 'Y', and enjoyed darts, baseball, hockey, bowling and calling Bingo. Survived by two brothers, Michael Selby (Juanita) of Hornby Island, B.C. and Robert Selby of Quispamsis, N.B.; step-brother, Allen Selby and his partner, Stephen of Fredericton, N.B. and one niece, Shoshanah Claire Selby. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. from Brenan's Chapel. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Romero House Soup Kitchen. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, February 19, 1946, SB Series, p.66 Barnett Koven Dies After Short Illness Many friends in the city and province will regret to learn of the death of Barnett Koven, which occurred in Boston on Sunday morning. Mr. Koven had been in failing health for some months and had been seriously ill for two weeks. He is a son of Mrs. Rachel Koven of West Saint John and the late Joseph Koven. Mr. Koven was a resident of Fairville, N.B. where he carried on business as a dry dock merchant. He was involved in community affairs. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Floyd Esptein of this city; one son, Jerry Koven, at home; his mother; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Hurtow, Bay Shore, New York and Mrs. H. M. Garson of West Saint John; two brothers, Morris Koven, Coldbrook, N.B. and Sydney Koven, West Saint John; and several nieces and nephews. The body will arrive in Saint John on the Boston train at noon Tuesday and will rest at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, from where the funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon with service at 2:30 o’clock. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, February 9, 1940, Page 16 Jacob Wiegensberg, 7, Dies in Hospital Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Max Weigensberg, 34 Wright Street, will sympathize with them in the death of their youngest, Jacob David, in the General Hospital yesterday afternoon after a brief illness. He was in his eighth year. The lad was a pupil in Grade 2 at Winter Street School and was of a bright disposition, well liked by his playmates. Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters, Anita and May at home, two brothers, Edward at home and Frank of Montreal. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from his parents' residence. The service was conducted by Rev. M. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, January 11, 1939, Page 185, SB Series 93 Faye M. Whitebone Passes Suddenly Faye Muriel, only daughter of William M. and Mabel (Hazelhurst) Whitebone, 47 Stanley Street, died suddenly in the General Hospital this morning. Miss Whitebone had not enjoyed good health for several years but there was no warning of the sudden attack that caused her death. During the night she became seriously ill and removal to the hospital for emergency treatment was ordered by her physician. The young lady's death proved a shock to her household and was heard among her friends with surprise and regret. She had enjoyed a large acquaintance and was a member of several clubs which during the time of her prolonged convalescence occasionally met with her in her home. Besides her parents she leaves two brothers, William B. and Russell H. Whitebone. The funeral will be held from her residence on Friday at 2:30 p.m. with interment in Fernhill Cemetery. The funeral was held from her residence and interment was made in Fernhill Cemetery.
