OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 2, 1981, Page 35 At St. Louis, Mo., April 1, 1981, after a brief illness, Dr. Joseph Tanzman of 617 Sand Cove Road, Saint John West; survived by his wife, two daughters, one brother, six grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The body will arrive Friday from St. Louis and rest at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. No flowers by request of the family, but donations would be appreciated to a charity of the donor’s choice or the Hadassah Wizo Organization by calling Mrs. Jack Kunitzky at 693-8480. The Evening Times Globe Thursday, April 2, 1981, page 25 Obituary - Dr. Joseph Tanzman Mourned [photo] Dr. Joseph Tanzman who practiced medicine in Saint John for over 50 years and delivered or assisted in the delivery of over 8,000 babies, died Wednesday in St. Louis, Mo., where he was visiting his daughter. He was 79. Dr. Tanzman, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, was still carrying on a practice at the time of his death. He and his wife Celia resided at 617 Sand Cover Road, Saint John West. The 1927 graduate of Montreal's McGill University began his practice in Saint John in 1930 in a small office on Main Street. 'It was hard for a young fellow to get started,' Dr. Tanzman once told an interviewer. 'People thought you had to be older and wiser and have a beard before you knew anything about medicine.' He had one patient the first day and his landlady was his only patient the second day. From the beginning he went on to build up a practice that encompassed thousands of patients. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire during the Second World War in recognition of his overseas service. He was commanding officer of the 14th Field Ambulance which saw service in France, Belgium and Holland. Dr. Tanzman was a former president of the Canadian Society for the Study of Fertility, former chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Canadian Medical Association and a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Saint John General Hospital. Born in Warsaw, Poland, he was the son of Jacob and Helen Belle Tanzman. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters (Isobel) Mrs. Isaac Boniuk of St. Louis and (Sandra) Mrs. Melvin Brown of Toronto, one brother William Tanzman of Arlington, Va., six grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The body will arrive from St. Louis Friday and rest at the Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street. The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, 91 [sic] Carleton Street. The family has requested there be no flowers, but would appreciate donations to a charity of the donor's choice or to the Hadassah-Wizo Organization be calling Mrs. Jack Kunitzky at 693-8480.
