OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, October 19, 1942 Boyaner – At her residence, 53 Elliot Row, on October 17, 1942, after several months of illness, Kate (Poyas) Boyaner, widow of Don Boyaner, survived by four sons, two daughters, one sister, six grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces. Body resting at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, from where the funeral will be held this (Monday) afternoon with service at 2:30 o’clock. Interment in Hebrew plot in Fernhill Cemetery. Mrs. K. Boyaner Dies at age of 73: Widow of former city Optometrist Passes at Home Here Mrs. Kate (Poyas) Boyaner, 73, widow of Don Boyaner, remembered by many older citizens as an optometrist in Saint John, who died over 32 years ago, passed away at her home, 53 Elliot Row, early Saturday evening after a long period of declining health. The surviving members of the immediate family are two daughters and four sons, Mrs. S. Goldfeather of this city is a sister. There are six grandchildren also. Mrs. Boyaner’s body is resting at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, King Street, East, where services will take place 2:30 o’clock this afternoon, when Rev. M. I. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb of the local synagogue will officiate. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. Mrs. Boyaner had lived in this city for more than 50 years. She was a native of Warsaw, Poland. With her sister, Mrs. Goldfeather, and her late brother, Abram Poyas, watchmaker and jeweler in Saint John for over 40 years and latterly of New York, she came to Canada in her youth. She was married to Mr. Boyaner in Montreal and soon after took up residence here. Church worker A founder member of the Daughters of Israel Organization in this city, Mrs. Boyaner maintained a keen interest in the affairs of her church congregation until her illness. Charitable and hospitable, she endeared herself to a large number. She was for years a member of the Hospital Aid. The surviving daughters are Frances, wife of I. A. C. Norman Smith of the RCAF, and Bertha, wife of Lieut. Maurice Elman, with the Canadian dental corps at Winnipeg. The sons are Louis and Eli Boyaner, optometrists, this city; Harry I., Vancouver, who visited his mother during this last summer, and Captain Frank Boyaner, attached to the Canadian Forces Overseas. Brager Dies in General Hospital after Brief Illness The death of Charles Gerson Brager, 47 Leinster Street occurred at an early hour this morning in the Saint John General Hospital after an illness of only a few days. Mr. Brager had been in his usual good health until Monday and his death came suddenly and as great shock to his family and friends. Mr. Brager was a son of the late Michael and Vera Brager of the city of Kovno, Lithuania and has been a highly respected citizen of Saint John where he carried on a successful business for over 50 years. He was one of the oldest members of the Hebrew Congregation and very active in all work pertaining to that body. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. L. R. Stibel and Ms. Shirley Brager of New York City; four sons, Louis A. and J. N. of the firm Brager Bros. Here; Halifax N.S. and Morton of Baltimore, Md. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street with service at 2:30 o’clock. The service will be conducted by Rev. M. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, November 16, 1935 Mrs. Minnie Budovitch Dies in Fredericton Mrs. Minnie Budovitch, widow of Max Budovitch, died suddenly early today at Fredericton following an illness of one day. Her husband died in June. She was born in Russia and came out to Saint John 22 years ago but had resided in Fredericton for 15 years. The body will be brought to the city by motor hearse tomorrow morning at 8:30 o’clock for burial here. Surviving are his wife Molly; six sons, Louis, Reuben, Benjamin, Hyman, Jack and Samuel, all of Fredericton; two daughters, Mrs. Abraham Levine and Miss Lena Budovitch, both of this city and 22 grandchildren. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, March 23, 2006 It is with profound sadness that the family of Edgar R. Cohen announces his passing on Monday, March 20, 2006. With his beloved family at his bedside he died with the dignity and quiet honour that marked his life. Born the son of the later Meyer and Bessie (Levine) Cohen he lived all of his 81 years in the city of his birth, Saint John. Proud of his heritage, his city and his province, Ed was a graduate of Saint John High School, attended Mount Allison University and the Saint John Business School. Ed was most known as the proprietor of Hoffman's Ltd., on Main Street where he carried on business for more than 50 years. A life long member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, Ed was a life associate of the Hadassah-Wizo Organization of Canada, and a member of the B'nai B'rith. A life long member of the PC Association of Canada, politics was his favourite pasttime. Ed was a Mason of the Grand Lodge and served on the Saint John Parking Commission; he was an inaugural member of the Board of Directors of the Saint John Port Commission, a Trustee of St. Joseph's Hospital and a member of the Northwest Commercial Traveler's Association. Ed's greatest joy in life was his family which he held most dear. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Erminie (Bernstein); his children, Cathy (Bill Thompson), Lee, Shelley (Barry Cohen-Thorley); and his prized grandson, Micah Tait. His sister Jennie Cohen, several nieces and nephews, and Lenora Garnett, his devoted friend of 40 years also survive him. Ed was pre-deceased by his brother Israel Cohen. Funeral services will be held at Brenan's Bay View Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 1461 Manawagonish Road at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2006, followed by interment at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery (Fernhill Cemetery). Following the funeral Shiva will be held at the family home where friends will be welcome anytime after 2:00 p.m. during the week. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to ONE Change Inc. A wonderful brother and brother- in-law to the late Rose, the late Sam and the late Gladys, the late Eli and Connie, Issie and the late Ruth. Dedicated son of the late Harry and the late Ida, and son-in-law of the late Hyman and the late Anna Garson. The centre of a large extended and closely knit family, he will be sorely missed by many nephews, nieces and cousins. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, September 1, 2010 Peacefully, at home, surrounded by family, G. Anne Elman passed away on Monday August 30, 2010. Born in Saint John on July 11th, 1927 to Charles and Edna (Ward) Harrington. Anne was a free spirited, creative, and passionate woman, who touched the lives of so many in the community. A graduate of the Fine Arts Department of Saint John Vocational School, Anne moved to Nova Scotia where she was active in radio and theatre, with the Dominion Drama Festival, the Theatre Arts Guild, and C.B.C. Radio plays. Upon returning to Saint John, Anne was employed with the Art Department of the New Brunswick Museum, where she taught art classes, trained docents, and assisted in the selection of paintings for the Canadian Art Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal. An active volunteer in the community, she was a member of the Sisterhood of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation and the Canadian Haddassah Wizo, taught Hebrew School, mentored the Young Judea youth group, and volunteered with schools and community events. Anne was the founder and director of The Children’s Drama Workshop and Company of Young Actors, and loved sharing her time and passion with hundreds of children who worked with her. She was recognized by the City of Saint John in 2005 for her 20 years of contributing to theatre in Saint John, as well being the recipient of the New Brunswick Day Merit Award for Arts and Culture in 1992. Anne was a visual artist, playwright, teacher, mentor, and friend. Anne is survived by her husband and best friend, Daniel, her three children: Morgan Leigh (Toronto), Kate, and David (Saint John), son-in-law Michael, 2 beloved grandchildren (her pride and joy) Elijah and Sophie, and sister Gladys Cunningham (Toronto). Funeral will be Wednesday, September 1st at 2 p.m. at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, followed by a graveside service at the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Everett of York Point, Saint John, N.B., widow of Barney (Herk) H. Everett. Born in St. Stephen she was a daughter of the Morris L. and Rachel (Middleman) Prilutsky. Mrs. Everett operated, with her husband, Barney’s Department Stores on Union Street and later the Factory Shoe Outlet on Charlotte Street. Retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Ladies Morning Musical Club, a member of the Sisterhood of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek, Hadassah WIZO serving on the national executive. Survived by two daughters, Joanne Morrison, Rothesay N.B.; Martha Dantowitz, Chestnut Hill, Mass.; two sisters, Sadie Saperstein, Malde, Mass.; Bertha Miller, St. Louis, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Mark Morrison and his wife Cathy and children Joshua and Sarah Morrison of Windsor, Ont.; Dr, Debra Morrison and her husband, Dr. Lawrence Title, Halifax, N.S.; David Dantowitz and his wife Rabbi Faith Dantowitz, Chestnut Hill, Mass.; Nancy Morrison, Rothesay, N.B.; Robin Morrison, Newmarket, Ont. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 22, 1968 S. I. Everett Laid To Rest (attached photo) Funeral services for Samuel I. Everett of 114 Connors Street, Saint John West, were held Sunday afternoon at the Calvin Funeral Home (Hillsley Chapel). Mr. Everett, a well-known tobacconist and sportsman, died unexpectedly at his residence early Sunday morning. He was 53. Mr. Everett had been proprietor of Sam's Smoke Shop, 511 Main Street, since 1947 and was part-owner of Bolorama Lanes, Union Street. Born in Saint John on September 19, 1914, Mr. Everett was the son of John and Sarah (Jacobson) Everett. He was a member of Congregation Sharrei Zedek and B'nai Brith. He achieved his greatest sporting success n the field of bowling where he earned the nickname, 'The Rifle,' for his exploits until his retirement from active participation three years ago. He was one of the first men to roll a 400 tripple in New Brunswick Candlepin Championships and his 428 in 1963 set a record that stood until recently He was also member of several provincial and Maritime championship teams, bowling for Saint John, Central, CYO and Bowlarama Lanes. In his earlier years, Mr. Everett also played on several local baseball, hockey, and softball teams and was an amateur boxer. For a time, he promoted boxing shows in the city and also was known as an amateur historian, particularly in boxing and baseball. The service was conducted by Rabbi Benjamin Issenberg. Pallbearers were: Bernard Bloom, Philip Hamburg, Norman Hamburg, Lewis Aranoff, William Meltzer, Bernard Freedman, and I. J. Davis. Among the many floral tributes were those from: Management and staff, Baxter Dairies Limited; Management and staff Rink Service Station, Main Street; Management and staff Lord Beaverbrook Rink. Among the many donations to Canadian Heart Foundation were from G. H. Hamilton and Sons Limited; Men's Bowlarama House League; Saint John News Company Limited; Saint John Boxing Commission; Regal Wholesale Limited; Lanes Bakery Limited; Club 69; Bowlarama Bowling League; managing editor and news department, Telegraph Journal and Evening Time Globe; and Bowlarama Ladies Bowling League. Surviving are his wife the former Beatrice Y. Cohen; a son, Jon David, of Saint John; two daughters, Mrs. Hebert Leopald, Hicksville N.Y., and Miss Cheryl Sheila, a student in Boston; a brother, B. H. Everett, Saint John; and a sister, Mrs. Bertram Katz, New Rochelle, N.Y.; three grandchildren and several nephews and nieces Interment took place in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Born in Saint John, Ida was a member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek, a past member of the Shaarei Zedek Sisterhood, a lifetime member of Hadassah, a volunteer for the N.B. Museum, a Brown Owl and Girl Guide leader; being very active in the scouting movement, as well as canvassing for the N.B. Heart and Stroke Foundation. Surviving besides her husband Max are her son, Jerome of Abbotsford, B.C.; two daughters, June and her special friend Michael Korenberg of Kingston, Ontario, Marlene and her husband Howard Slepkov of St. Catharine’s, Ontario; two grandchildren Noah and Rebecca and many loving nieces and nephews. Ida was predeceased by five brothers, Ben, Joe, Bill, Abe and Jack. She was the last surviving child of the late Morris and Cecilia (Hains) Guss. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 9, 1999 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, (506-634-7424). The interment will follow in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery.
