OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 5, 2001 Katherine Levine - Katherine Levine, cherished wife of Simon Levine, died May 3, 2001, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, following several months of failing health. She was the daughter of the late Kalman and Sonya Glustein, born in Russia, and immigrated to Canada with her parents nearly 80 years ago. She attended school in New Waterford, NS, and was married there in 1939. The family resided in Saint John for the past 40 years, having previously lived in Moncton and Florida. Mrs. Levine served in many community agencies as a volunteer, including Canadian Mental Health Association and the Elizabeth Fry Society, Moncton, the New Brunswick Museum, and the Saint John Free Public Library. She also participated with the PC Women’s Caucus, the Provincial and Federal PC Party, as well as having a leadership role in the Sisterhood of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, the Mogen David Adom (Israel), Hadassah Wizo, National Executive, where she faithfully supported and improved medical services in Israel and served as Regional Director for New Brunswick. She is survived by her husband, Simon, and three children, Lorraine Zides, Dr. Leonard Levine, and David Levine, all of Ottawa, grandchildren, Heidi Peacock of Toronto, Cheryl (John) Dover of Ottawa, Dr. Colin (Andrea) Zides of Fonthill, and Andrea Zides of Toronto, great-grandchildren, Shanna and Michell Picov, Milton and Saunya Drover, all of Ottawa, Carter and Sidney Zides of Fonthill, one brother, Arron (Joan) Glustein of Vera Beach, Florida, and three sisters, Evelyn (Al) Wiggins and Betty Troberman of California, and Dorothy Tomakin of Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. Although there will be no visitation the funeral service will be held at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, (506)634-7424, on Sunday, May 6, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. Rabbi David Ellis of Halifax will officiate. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek (section of Fernhill cemetery), following the service. Memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. www.brenansfh.com The Telegraph Journal Monday, May 21, 2001 Katherine Levine - The funeral for Mrs. Katherine (Kay) (Glustein) Levine, of Saint John, NB, loving wife of Simon Levine, was held on Sunday May 6, 2001 from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, where the service was conducted by Rabbi David Ellis. The eulogy was delivered by Reuben Cohen. Present in the congregation were Mayor Shirley McAlary and Hon. Elsie Wayne, MP. Honourary pallbearers were I.J. Davis, Stan Matheson, Harry Levine, Lou Levine, Milton Levine, Isaac Druckman, Dr. Lew Freedman, Dr. Alan Robertson, Dr. Joe Arditti, Dr. Roy Wills, Max Fransblow, Dan Elman, Ron McLeod, and Gar Meltzer. Active pallbearers were Colin Zides, Stuart Urdang, Ben Smith, Phil Bloom, Irving Schelew, Bruce Washburn, and Bill Koven. All pallbearers were under the direction of Norman Hamburg and Ron Levine. The family received many remembrances to the Jewish Historical Museum; Canadian Cancer Society, with one from CIBC West Branch; and Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick. Following the service, interment took place at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. When we depart our earthy home for God’s Resting place, it is not how long or brief our stay, But how we lived our lives that counts. Though We may mourn the passing of a loved one, we Should also take comfort in the memory of the Many kindnesses that they have performed. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 17, 2005 Levine, Simon - 1911-2005. Simon Levine, 93, of Saint John, husband of the late Katherine (Glustein) Levine, passed away on May 15, 2005 at his home after a long illness. Born on December 19, 1911 in Fredericton, N.B., he was a son of the late Louis and Elizabeth Levine. Simon resided in Saint John for the past 90 years. He started his own grocery business in 1931, Dominion Food Shop and later changed it to Simon's Furniture on Union Street. He always had a smile for his many long-standing customers and friends. Simon was a member of congregation Shaarei Zedek and a member of the New Brunswick Masonic Lodge #2. He received his '50 year' pin some years ago. He was a world traveler and an avid gardener, and won many prizes for his roses and dahlias. His charismatic story telling and sense of humour were well known by so many friends in his beloved Saint John. Simon was a frequent supporter of many charitable organizations. He donated to the Empty Stocking Fund by cutting the trees himself, and selling them for Christmas. He also ran for city council. Simon is survived by his sister, Lillian Kashetsky (Hymie); his daughter Lorraine Zides (Milton) of Ottawa, Ontario; his sons Leonard and David Levine of Ottawa, Ontario; his grandchildren; Heidi Zides of Toronto, Cheryl Dover (John) of Ottawa, Colin Zides (Andrea) of Font Hill and Andrea Zides of Toronto; great grandchildren; Shawna Picov, Michelle Picov, Saunya Dover, Milton Dover, Carter Zides and Sydney Zides, and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Simon was predeceased by his sisters, Nelly Haslett (Roy), Bessie Cohen (Myer); his brother, Abe Levine (Margaret), Isaac Levine (Lillian) and Nathan Levine (Ruth). Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). A Masonic service will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. from Brenan's Chapel.
