OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, January 26, 1959, Page 9 Swetsky - At the Saint John General Hospital, Jan. 24, 1959, Benjamin Swetsky of 34 Adelaide Street, survived by two sons, two daughters, two brothers, one sister, seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral was held from the vestry of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue on Sunday afternoon with service at 2:30 o’clock. Interment was in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. The Telegraph Journal Monday, January 26, 1959, p.14 Benjamin Swetsky Dies in Hospital Ill for a period of 10 days, Benjamin Swetsky, well-known Retired City merchant, died at noon on Saturday at the Saint John General Hospital. He was 71 years of age. A resident of the city for many years, Mr. Swetsky, was born in Russia and came to Canada in 1907. He was the founder of Swetsky’s Men’s Wear store, which he operated on Mill Street for many years until his retirement. He was the son of the late David and Bessie Swetsky. One of the older members of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation, Mr. Swetsky was made an honorary Gabbai of the Synagogue some years ago in recognition of his outstanding work and devotion. Taking an active part in the work of the congregation, he served as a member of the board of directors. His wife, Mrs. Sarah Swetsky died Jan. 11, 1957. Surviving are two sons, Hyman Swetsky at home; Louis Swetsky, Fredericton; two daughters; Mrs. Joseph Steinberg, Montreal Que.; Mrs. Jack Budovitch, Fredericton; two brothers Abe Swetsky, Amherst, N.S., Nathan Swetsky, Glace Bay, one sister, Mrs. Paul Barillear, Amherst N.S., seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from the vestry of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue with service conducted by Rabbi Ralph Carmi, assisted by Rabbi Einsteidt. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery.
