The body of Louis Babb, youngest son of Mrs. Sarah and the late Isaac Babb, 45 Duke Street, was brought to the city today from Rome, N.Y. where he was killed on Wednesday. Samuel Babb, a brother, accompanied by his wife, arrived on the same train. A large number of friends and relatives of the young man were at the depot to pay respect to his memory. Louis Babb removed to New York with his brother more than five years ago. He leaves, besides his mother, four brothers and four sisters, all of whom live in the city excepting Samuel and a married sister in Brooklyn, N.Y. Burial took place this afternoon in the Hebrew burying ground, Fernhill, funeral from Chamberlain's undertaking parlours. Samuel Babb told an Evening Times Globe reporter that his brother and a fellow workman were killed instantly whilst riding on a construction truck from their living quarters in Rome, N.Y. to a large school building in the course of erection, where the men were employed. It was a cold, windy morning and the men were standing in the vehicle with their backs to the wind crashed against a low overhead steel bridge as the truck sped along. There were other men in the vehicle but not in so dangerous a position and all others escaped injury. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.221.

OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, April 14, 1972 Samuel A. Babb Dies in Halifax A prominent and highly respected member of the Saint John Jewish Community, Samuel A. Babb, died unexpectedly Wednesday in Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Born in Saint John, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Babb, he received his early education in the city, before going to the Pratt Institute in New York City, where he studied commercial art, which he also studied at New York University. For 20 years, Mr. Babb operated a commercial art and sign business in New York, before returning to Saint John in 1944 to join the Franklin and Herschorn Theatre Company. He moved to Halifax about a year and a half ago, and has been living in the Nova Scotia capital since that time. In 1961, he was the guest of honor at the Eighth Annual Negev Dinner, sponsored by Ezra Lodge No. 7, Zionist Men’s Association for the Jewish National Fund of Canada, and in 1970 was the guest of honor at the annual State of Israel Bond Dinner. The Saint John Jewish Community had undertaken the reclamation of 125 acres of land in the Negev Desert area of Israel, and contributions made at the Negev Dinner were used to establish a portion of this land in the name of each honored guest whose name is inscribed on a plaque located in the reclamation area. The area is being planted with trees, to be called the Canada Forest. While in Saint John, Mr. Babb served as local chairman and national executive member of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, and was a charter member and past vice-president of Saint John Lodge No. 1963, B’nai B’rith. He was a member of the Saint John Art Club, the industrial development committee of the former City of Lancaster, and was a director of the Maritime Motion Pictures Exhibitors Association. A 'Free Student Loan Fund' was established in the name of his only son, to aid students at the Institute of technology in Haifa, Israel. He was also Saint John chairman and National executive member of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, and local chairman of the Israel-Maritime League. He served as eastern Canadian vice-president of the national fund in 1967. He also served as president of the fund, and of the Atlantic Region Zionist Organization of Canada. He was former executive member and treasurer of the New Brunswick Museum, was active in the affairs of the New Brunswick Protestant Orphans Home, a member of the Saint John Board of Trade and worked with the Red Feather Campaign and the United Fund of Greater Saint John. Mr. Babb was also active in curling and golf in the city. Babb, Samuel A. In June, 1970, Mr. Babb was elected to the executive of the Jewish National Fund of Canada. Besides his wife, Lillian (Franklin) Babb, Mr. Babb is survived by one son, Franklin Lewis, of Saint John; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Meizger of Miami Beach, Fla., Mrs. Saul Bronstien and Mrs. William Gasoi, both of Montreal, and Mrs. Irving Geller of New York City; two brothers, Joseph of Hollywood Fla., and Buddy of Long Island, N.Y., several nephews and nieces. The body is resting at the Calvin Funeral Home, (Hillsley) 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. (Original article included photograph) Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.24. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, February 27, 1967, Page 20 Unexpectedly at Miami. Florida, on Feb. 25, 1967, Mitchell Bernstein, survived by one son, one daughter, two brothers, four sisters, five grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces. The body will arrive by plane Monday morning, and will rest at the vestry of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, Carleton Street, from where the funeral will be held Monday afternoon with service at 3 o’clock. Interment in Fernhill Cemetery. Evening Times Globe February 1967 Theatre Pioneer And Active Citizen The passing of Mr. Mitchell S. Bernstein breaks one of the few remaining links with the early days of the motion picture business in this part of Canada. The B. and L. Theatre Circuit, in which he had been a partner since 1928, came into being at a time when history-making developments were taking place in the motion picture world with the approach of the 'talkies'. The company, recognizing the prospect that the silent era would soon fade into oblivion, pioneered in the introduction of talking pictures in this region and continued to grow with the advance of the new entertainment medium. Mr. Bernstein was well known also in the real estate and apartment field in Saint John. But despite the extent of his business activities he found time to take a prominent role in a great many aspects of the work of the Shaarei-Zedek Congregation, the Zionist Organization of Canada, and the Israel bond and appeal campaigns. These constructive efforts were recognized in various honors Mr. Bernstein was accorded both in Canada and in Israel. His leadership will be missed in this community, and many friends of all faiths will be saddened by his death. Bernstein, Mitchell S. Evening Times Globe February 1967 Community Mourns Mitchell Bernstein Mitchell S, Bernstein, a prominent local business man, passed away in hospital in Miami Beach, Florida, Saturday afternoon, following a brief illness. He was born in New York City, in 1895, the son of the late Louis and Fanny Bernstein. He had been a resident of Saint John for over 50 years. Mr. Bernstein founded the Mitchell Apartments and also was one of the principal owners of the Latour Terrace Buildings, on Union Street. Mitchell Street, in the city, was named after him. In partnership with Joseph Lieberman, he formed the B and L Theatre Circuit, which covers the Maritime Provinces and Maine, with its head office in Saint John. This partnership, which was formed in June 1928, nearly 40 years ago, was the first company to introduce talking pictures to the area, with the partners using their own equipment on the road. Mr. Bernstein was married to the late Clara Goldfeather who passed away in 1962. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. E. R. Cohen (Erminie), one son Mortimer L., both of Saint John, five grandchildren; two brothers, Moe Bernstein, New York City, Willie Bernstein, Los Angeles; four sisters, Mrs. Bessie Margolian, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Sam Mollet, Mrs. Sam Rosenberg, and Miss Zelda Bernstein, all of Los Angeles, and several nephews and nieces. Active in the community projects, he was a past president of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation, as well as holding many other positions with the congregation. An ardent sportsman, he was at one time a member of the Saint John Boxing Commission. He was a chartered member of B’nai Birth, the Motion Picture Pioneers, Variety Club of Toronto, and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 17, Halifax. He was an honorary vice president of the Zionist Organization of Canada. In May 1954, the Saint John Jewish Community honored him with a testimonial and Negev Dinner. A grove of trees known as 'The Mitchell Sydney Bernstein Grove' in Israel bears tribute to his devotion and services to the Jewish Community. He was the first chairman of the Israel Bond Campaign, with Mitchell Franklin. He is a past president of the YMHA, and produced many shows, which were very successful and held in the vestry of the synagogue. He also chaired many United Israel Appeal campaigns, as well as many other community organization dinners. Bernstein, Mitchell S. The funeral service will be held today at 3 o’clock conducted by Rabbi A. Feffer, from the Congregation Shaarei Zedek vestry. The body is expected to arrive this morning at 10:45 o’clock. Interment will take place in the Congregation Shaarei Zedek Cemetery at Fernhill. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to send donations to the Canadian Heart Fund and the Canadian Centennial Forrest, for the purchase of trees (Original article includes photograph) Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.433. OBITUARIES: Daily Telegraph, February 22, 1923, Page 3 Jury Visits Scene of Tragic Death of Samuel Miller [Milber] A coroner's jury was appointed today to hold an inquest on the death of Samuel Miller [sic], an eight year old boy, who was killed Tuesday afternoon by a transfer train at the Acadia Street crossing. The jurors viewed the body yesterday, and inspected the scene of the accident. The inquest will be held in the courtroom in Germain Street on Friday evening at eight o'clock. The jury consists of A.T. Weatherhead, foreman; William Crabis, George H. McLaughlin, R. Wilmot Seely, Benjamin A. Dennison, William Wheaton and Walter J. Lawson. The viewed the body at Brenan's undertaking rooms at eleven o'clock and then went to the scene of the accident. There were traces of blood found on the track as well as pieces of bone from the unfortunate lad's foot, where the engine wheels had passed over it. The survey yesterday led to the impression with some of the jurors that the young fellow had caught his foot or some part of him as the train passed over him and had been dragged under it for more than twenty feet until a switch was reached, where the crossing tracks had forced him into the frog. It was thought that he was caught there and rolled off the sled, his left foot going under the wheels and being practically crushed off. His sled was found practically undamaged under the front part of the train. Gravestone reference note: no stone. Additional notes: died in sledding accident
