Notes: OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, July 21, 1941 Guss – At the Saint John General Hospital on July 1, 1941, after a brief illness, Joseph Guss, leaving his wife, parents, one sister and four brothers. Funeral this afternoon at 4 o'clock from Chamberlain's Funeral Home, 145 King Street East. The Telegraph Journal Monday, July 21, 1941 Joe Guss Dies; Scout Leader Ill Only 1 Day Mr. Guss played a leading role in the activities of the local Jewish community. He was president of Saint John Young Judaea and also of Maritime Young Judaea, secretary of the Ezra Lodge, Zionist Order of Habonim and national vice-president of Young Judaea. He had held office in the Saint John Y.M.H.A. He was employed for a few years on the advertising staff of The Telegraph Journal and The Evening Times Globe. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, the former Miss Ruth Berman of Sackville; one sister, Miss Ida Sarah Guss, at home; and four brothers, Benjamin R., barrister of this city, William, employed with Regal Films Ltd., A. M. D. Guss, of the British Iron & Metal Company, all of this city, and Cpl. Jack Guss, R.C.A.S.C., who is here on leave. The funeral will be held this afternoon from Chamberlain's Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, at 4 o'clock with service conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb. Interment will be in the Hebrew plot of Fernhill Cemetery. Spirit Will In Scout Circle – Chief Justice Baxter Pays Tribute to Work of Joe Guss Chief Justice Baxter, president of the provincial council of the Boy Scouts Association, paid tribute today to the devotion of Joseph Guss to the scout movement. 'It was with great regret and a deep sense of personal loss that I learned of the death of Mr. Guss,' said His Lordship. 'He was the life of scouting and scouting was life to him. 'No task was ever given him that he did not accept joyfully and eagerly. Nor was it necessary to get tasks for him. He found them for himself. Many a time when full of health and energy he came into my office, he brought suggestions for things to be done and volunteered to do them. 'When his health broke down, we all thought that his wonderful physique would soon restore him, but as the months passed by we had our doubts. At last it looked as if he were to enjoy his work and we to enjoy his doing it. But it was not to be, and now he must be counted among our remembrances. To his wife and family there will be sympathy from all Scouts, far and near. There will be no Gilwell Camp for a long time at which there will not be noticed a vacant place which only Joe could fill. But his spirit, transcending race and creed, abides with us in the great brotherhood of those whose endeavor is the service of humanity, and to be helpful to those who need. The Telegraph Journal Monday, July 21, 1941 News of the sudden passing of Joseph Guss of this city at the General Hospital early this morning after an illness of but a day was learned with keen regret by many friends throughout the Maritimes. Mr. Guss, who took a prominent part in scouting leadership in this province for a number of years, had only recently finished a period of convalesence from a serious illness which invalided him for two years. His long and faithful record in scouting was climaxed in September of 1939 when Sir Perry Everett, deputy Imperial commisioner for Boy Scouts, presented Mr. Guss with the Scout Medal of Merit. The medal is awarded for distinguished service to scouting; it was the first time in the Dominion that it had been presented by the personal representative of the late chief scout, Lord Baden-Powell. Friend of Baden-Powell The event had an extra significance for the popular young man, for it was he who officially greeted the chief scout when the latter visited the province in 1935. Out of that association grew a warm, personal friendship that was continued up until 'B.-P's' death. The presentation was made in the General Hospital where Mr. Guss was a patient at the time. Dominion provincial and district scout officials were present. He had been associated with scouting since 1924, when the Young Judaean (13th Saint John) troop was organized. He became assistant scoutmaster of the troop and then assistant and provincial secretary and assistant district commissioner. He was on the headquarters staff of the Maritime Gilwell Scout Camp for a number of years, and held the 'Gilwell Beads' His activities in scouting brought him in contact with thousands of Boy Scouts throughout the province and his leadership ability was proved time and again. U.N.B. Law Graduate A son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Guss, 4 Summer Street, he was born in this city and attended the public schools here, graduating from the Saint John High School. He entered the University of New Brunswick Law School and received the degree of B.C.I. in 1934. In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, he was a student of St. Joseph's University when it held its classes here and became a member of the St. Patrick's Society. During the year when he was taking courses from the two universities he found time to work as an insurance salesman, Boy Scout chairman of the law school debating committee and secretary of the Playgrounds Association. He was also secretary of the Saint John Branch of the League of Nations Society. The Telegraph Journal Tuesday, July 22, 1941 Many At Funeral Of Joseph Guss - Large Number of Floral Tributes Received By Scout Leader Men and women from all walks of life attended the funeral of Joseph (Joe) Guss held yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock from Chamberlain's Funeral Home, 115 King Street East. Including among those present were Chief Justice Baxter, president of the provincial council of the Boy Scouts Association, and several other district Scout officials, all paying tribute to the memory of Mr. Guss who was prominent in scout leadership for many years. Service was conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb and Chief Justice Baxter spoke as the grave received. Interment was made in the Hebrew plot at Fernhill Cemetery. Among the flowers received were tributes from the following: Management and staff of the Telegraph Journal and The Evening Times Globe; Moncton Boy Scouts' Association; management and staff of Regal Films; district staff and council, Saint John District Boy Scouts Association; Saint John Rotary Club; management and staff of the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada, and the management and staff of Calps' Ltd.
