- OBITUARIES: Saint John Globe, September 2, 1931 Mrs. A. Isaacs, aged 85, Dies in Montreal Was prominent in Welfare work when resident here Word reached relatives in Saint John last night of the death of Mrs. Jennie Isaacs, widow of Abraham Isaacs, for years a prominent Saint John citizen in the manufacturing of tobacco goods as a senior member of the firm of A&I Isaacs. (This paragraph copied verbatim, not edited) Mrs. Isaacs was born in London, England had reached the advanced age of 85 years. For more than 20 years she had been making her home with her daughter Mrs. I.N. Rubinovitch in Montreal, although she had returned here on many occasions to the scene of her family to enjoy reunions with many people. She was the daughter of the late Solomon Hart who established a tobacco business on Prince William Street before the great fire of 1877. This business was continued by Mr. Hart's descendants and is today represented in the proprietorship of Harry Green, owner of the Louis Green store. Young Mr. Green being a grandson of the founder of the business. During her married life and the growth of her children to maturity the late Mrs. Isaacs' home was a center of charitable work and helpfulness in relief matters of a city wide nature. When the Daughters of Israel, a charitable organization and Church unit was instituted here, Mrs. Isaacs was one of the promoters and for a period acted as its treasurer. She was a very kindly lady and with the children participated in the young life of the city enthusiastically. Mrs. Rubinovitch lives in Montreal, Mrs. S. D. Lewis in Havana, Cuba and Sidney Isaacs in Montreal. The late Lyle Isaacs was the only one of the family to retain business interests in St. John.
