- Shel Yad: Black painted box on a flat, square, base. The base is made of multiple layers that have been stitched together. A leather strap passes through a leather loop on the reverse of the base, which allows the strap to be looped into itself and adjusted for size. - Rectangular portrait of Yerucham Mordechal Hollander in a uniform, wearing a cap and an armband on his left arm, possibly a star of David armband which, would identify him as a Jew. Narrative: Yerucham Mordechal Hollander (donor's father) was born on July 4, 1916 in Gherla (Szamosujvar/ Neuschloss), Cluj County, Romania (Transylvania region). After the Hungarian annexion in 1940, anti-Jewish measures and economic restrictions were imposed, followed by physical persecution. In late 1941 most of the men of military age in Cluj-Gherla were conscripted for forced labour and transported to the eastern front to the Nazi-occupied area of the Russia (Soviet Union). Hollander was amongst those conscripted and spend time in forced labour camps from October 1941 to January 1945. He, along with 12 other prisoners, escaped and walked back to Gherla through Ukraine; only 2 made it home to Gherla. Photograph was taken as Hollander was making his way back home (December 1944 to May 1945).
