OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, July 28, 1969 LIEBERMAN – At St. Joseph’s Hospital, July 26, 1969, Joshua L., husband of Mrs. Aida M. (Jacobson) of 86 Orange St. Survived by his wife, two sons, one brother, one sister, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Resting at the Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley) 91 Leinster Street, Saint John, where service will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. (picture included in original) Joshua Lieberman Funeral Today The funeral of Joshua Lieberman, a well-known Saint John citizen will be held from the Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster St. today at 2:30 p.m. Mr. Lieberman died early Saturday morning in Saint Joseph’s Hospital following an illness. He was 73. A pioneer in the motion picture business in Maritime Provinces, Mr. Lieberman was a co-partner in B and L Theatres Ltd. He was active as a businessman and community leader and was prominent in the work of service organizations particularly the Rotary Club. One of the leaders of the Saint John Jewish Community, Mr. Lieberman had served nine consecutive years as president of Congregation Shaarei Zedek, marking the longest term of office in the history of the community. A past president of the Rotary Club, he gained particular distinction as founder and president of the Saint John Boys and Girls Club, a major youth recreational facility started in the East End. He served on the board of the Greater Saint John United Fund and took an active role in the Board of Trade. He was the last chairman of the State of Iarael Bond Campaign in Ottawa and help membership in the F and A. M. and other community organzations. Mr. Lieberman served as vice-president of the Atlantic Region Zionist Organization of Canada and in May of this year received an award in recognition of outstanding work on behalf of the organzation. In 1937 he had been named one of Canada’s outstanding Rotarians at a dinner to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club. And during the same year he was honored at a Negev Dinner for his promotion and support of many community betterment enterprises. In 1959 he was honored at an annual dinner of the local chapter of the Canadian Picture Pioneers Association, to mark more than 25 years of service to the organzation. He was a co-partner in B and L Theatres Ltd. Among his other community endeavors were work with the former Community Chest, the Canadian Institute for the Blind and the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music. Born in Toronto, Mr. Lieberman was a son of the late Abraham Herschel and Sarah Lieberman. He is survived by his wife, the former Aida Mary Jacobson; two sons, Stanley of New York and Avrom of Saint John; one brother Moe of Edmonton, Atla., Mrs. Minnie Cossin, New York, three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
