Funeral from the vestry of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue this afternoon with service at 2:30 p.m. Interment in Green-Hart Cemetery. The Evening Times Globe Wednesday, October 30, 1957, pp. 17 and 28 Harry C. Green Dies of Seizure Stricken by a seizure at his home, Harry Costello Green, manager and owner of Green's Ltd., head of King Street, died on Tuesday afternoon at the General Hospital. He was 68 years of age. The well-known tobacconist and merchant was born in Saint John, the son of the late Louis and Elizabeth (Hart) Green and had been a resident of the city all his life. Mr. Green was a member of the fourth generation of the first Jewish family to settle in Saint John. He had been manager of the business founded by his grandfather, Nathan Green in 1861, since the death of his father in 1922. For many years the store had been located in Saint John's uptown area. Prior to its present site at the Head of King Street, the store at different times was located on Charlotte Street, Prince William Street and in the City Market. Mr. Green had been ill at his home, 24 Horsfield Street, for the last week recovering from an attack of flu family members said. He was a member of the Congregation of Shaarei Zedek and of the Saint John lodge Bnai Brith. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Dora Corber of Saint John; two sons, Louis P., Saint John and Nathan Green, Montreal' two daughters, Mrs. Samuel Cohen and Mrs. Louis Citren, Saint John; one brother Hart Green, QC, Winnipeg, Manitoba; one sister, Mrs. I.A. Wyner, New York; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held this afternoon from the vestry of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue with service at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be in Green-Hart Cemetery, on the Old Westmorland Road. [There should be a couple of corrections made to this obituary - Harry was actually a member of the third generation of Greens in Saint John and the Greens actually arrived one year after the Hart family who are considered to be the founders of the community.] Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.494. OBITUARIES: Daily Telegraph, October 20, 1921 Obituary A host of friends in and about the city will be sorry to learn of the death of Louis Green, who died yesterday afternoon after a short illness. Mr. Green was born in London, England, and came here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Green, at the age of eight years and had resided in St. John for the last sixty years. He was associated with his father in business during his youth, but for the last thirty-six years conducted a well-known business of his own in the city. Of a particularly pleasant disposition, Mr. Green gathered about him a large circle of friends, who spoke highly always of his uprightness and honesty. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity since the age of twenty-one and was also identified with the Independent Order of Oddfellows. Mr. Green was a good citizen. His brisk business manner won him friends in his commercial life and his kindly nature and devotion to all that was good in home life made him liked and respected by all. Mr. Green is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. The sons are S. Hart Green of Winnipeg, and Harry C.Green, of this city. Mrs. I. A Wyner of New York, and Miss Alice M. Green of St. John, are the daughters. The sympathy of the community will be extended to Mrs. Green and family in their sad bereavement. The funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. Deaths Green - At his residence, 171 Princess street, on October 19, 1921, Louis Green, aged 68 years. Funeral from his late residence, Friday afternoon at 2:30. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, October 13, 1930, Page 3 A.S. Hart, Well Known Citizen Passes Away Prominent Business Man Died Saturday After Lengthy Illness Abraham S. Hart, 55, son of the late Solomon and Alice Davis Hart, for years connected with the tobacco trade in Saint John, as was his father, before him, passed away at his home, 86 Mecklenburg Street, Saturday evening after a patiently-borne illness. He was only ill for a few weeks, however, Mr. Hart was denied daily walks uptown where it was his pleasure to meet with fellow citizens. Though the youngest of a large family, Mr. Hart had the distinction of being the oldest native born Hebrew citizen as well as holding first place as a member of that race in point of years of residence regardless of age. The Isaac, Green and Hart families were the first Jewish people to establish themselves in business in Saint John, Mr. Hart Sr. coming here as early as 1862. The late Mr. Hart was of an intensively industrious nature in his early days. Educated in local schools, he was associated with his father in retail tobacco trade in King Street and Charlotte Street for years. Then he became travelling representative for A. and I. Isaacs, cigar and cigarette manufacturers when that firm was one of Saint John's most important industries. Mr. Hart was also in business for himself and at one time owned and managed a cigar factory at the corner of Church and Prince William Streets. Mr. Hart contributed much time and effort to assist in Jewish immigration work at Sand Point, a philanthropy to a major extent superintended by Abram Poyas, now of New York. He was one of the organizers and treasurer for years of the first synagogue built in this city and ever a devotional adherent. Therefore Mr. Hart's passing will be keenly felt in several circles. Hospitable and bright-minded he made many friends and his enthusiasm in matters in which he interested himself made him an outstanding personality. Mrs. Hart, formerly Harriet Phyllis Steiner, of New York and two sons, Ronald S. and Wilbert S., are the surviving members of the family. Both young men have been with their parents for several weeks. Mr. Hart is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. Caroline Isaacs and Mrs. Rachel Landau, Saint John, Mrs. Jennie Isaacs, Westmount, P.Q., Mrs. Elizabeth Green, Vancouver, B.C., and Mrs. Rebecca Wyzanski, Brookline, Massachusetts. Evening Times Globe Monday, October 13, 1930, page 9 Deaths Hart - At his residence, 86 Mecklenburg Street, on Saturday, October 11, Abraham S. Hart, aged 55 years, leaving a wife and two sons. Funeral today (Monday) at 3 p.m. from his late home. Interment in the Green Hart Cemetery. Evening Times Globe Monday, October 13, 1930, page 9 Funerals Abraham S. Hart The funeral of Abraham S. Hart was held from his late residence, 86 Mecklenbyrg Street, this afternoon and many attended. Service was conducted by Rabbi Simon Heinglich at 3 o'clock. The flowers were many and beautiful. Interment was made in the family plot in Fernhill. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.509 / JM 998.61.510.

(This paragraph copied verbatim, not edited) Mrs. Isaacs was born in London, England had reached the advanced age of 85 years. For more than 20 years she had been making her home with her daughter Mrs. I.N. She was the daughter of the late Solomon Hart who established a tobacco business on Prince William Street before the great fire of 1877. This business was continued by Mr. Hart's descendants and is today represented in the proprietorship of Harry Green, owner of the Louis Green store. During her married life and the growth of her children to maturity the late Mrs. Isaacs' home was a center of charitable work and helpfulness in relief matters of a city wide nature. When the Daughters of Israel, a charitable organization and Church unit was instituted here, Mrs. Isaacs was one of the promoters and for a period acted as its treasurer.
