- OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, January 15, 1985 Benjamin R. Guss, QC, Succumbs In 80th year Benjamin R. Guss, QC, a man long prominent in legal and community affairs in Saint John, died at the Saint John Regional Hospital Monday after a brief illness. He was 79. Mr. Guss was a former Family Court judge and was a pioneer in legal aid in the province. He was also a founder of the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music and the Saint John Community Concerts Association and held many positions in Rotary International. Common Council, at its regular meeting Monday, paid tribute to Mr. Guss and extended sympathy to his family. Mr. Guss, who resided at 61 Rocky Terrace, was the husband of Mildred Ruth (Bassen) Guss. He was born in Lithuania, the son of the late Morris and Celia (Hans) Guss. He came to Canada at the age of four. Mr. Guss received Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees from Dalhousie University and an honorary doctorate of civil law from the University of New Brunswick in Saint John in 1981. He was called to the New Brunswick Bar in 1930. He was appointed a Queen's Council in 1952 and a Master of the Supreme Court a year later. He served as legal counsel for the Saint John County Council for 10 years, and drafted over 100 pieces of legislation on behalf of the municipality for presentation to the Legislature. He was appointed a Probate Court judge and subsequently became a judge of the Provincial Court's family division, retiring from the post in 1974. He also served as the Federal Court of Canada's regional administrator in Saint John. Mr. Guss was also administrator of deregulation for New Brunswick, in which capacity he reviewed the over 500 regulations in the province's laws and eliminated the regulations which were redundant or illegal. He also headed the royal commission set up by the provincial government and wrote the resulting report on which New Brunswick's hospital insurance scheme was based. Mr. Guss was the founding chairman of the Canadian Bar Association's legal aid committee and the first chairman of the legal aid committees of the Barristers' Society of New Brunswick and the Saint John Law Society. He served as chairman of the New Brunswick Advisory Board on Legal Aid. He also served on the CBA's council for over 30 years and a former president of the Saint John Law Society. He was honorary life president of the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music and of the Saint John Community Concerts Association. He was a life member of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals. In addition, Mr. Guss was a life member of the Saint Joh Art Club and the New Brunswick Museum and a member of the New Brunswick Historical Society. He had a long association with Rotary International, joining the Rotarians in 1937. He served as a director of Rotary International, a member of Rotary's world fellowship committee and a district governor, committee member and director. He was also a past president of the Rotary Club of Saint John. He was president, and later honorary president of the Saint John College Development Corporation, which played a major role in the establishment of the University of New Brunswick in Saint John. Mr. Guss also served as Dutch counsel for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, stepping down from the post in 1972. In 1972, he was honored by the Saint John Jewish community for his work on behalf of the State of Israel, and by the Boys' Clubs of Canada for outstanding service to boys. Surviving besides his wife are one son, Jonathan J.E. of Toronto; three daughters, Mrs. Keren Milner of Boston, Judith Guss Teicholz of Lexington, Mass., and Faith Guss of Oslo, Norway; three brothers, Abram of Saint John, William of Montreal and Jack of Toronto; one sister, Mrs. Ida Fransblow of Saint John; five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The body is resting at the Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. Interment will be made in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Born in Saint John he was the son of the late Cyra (Hans) and Morris Guss. Mr. Guss is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Guss of Montreal and Monica Guss of Los Angeles, one sister Ida Fransblow and her husband Max of Saint John, three sisters-in-law, Mildred, Rose, and Bernetta, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Benjamin, Joseph, William, Abraham, and Philip. Funeral this afternoon at 4 o'clock from Chamberlain's Funeral Home, 145 King Street East. The Telegraph Journal Monday, July 21, 1941 Joe Guss Dies; Scout Leader Ill Only 1 Day Mr. Guss played a leading role in the activities of the local Jewish community. He was president of Saint John Young Judaea and also of Maritime Young Judaea, secretary of the Ezra Lodge, Zionist Order of Habonim and national vice-president of Young Judaea. He had held office in the Saint John Y.M.H.A. He was employed for a few years on the advertising staff of The Telegraph Journal and The Evening Times Globe. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, the former Miss Ruth Berman of Sackville; one sister, Miss Ida Sarah Guss, at home; and four brothers, Benjamin R., barrister of this city, William, employed with Regal Films Ltd., A. M. D. Guss, of the British Iron & Metal Company, all of this city, and Cpl. Jack Guss, R.C.A.S.C., who is here on leave. The funeral will be held this afternoon from Chamberlain's Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, at 4 o'clock with service conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb. Interment will be in the Hebrew plot of Fernhill Cemetery. Spirit Will In Scout Circle – Chief Justice Baxter Pays Tribute to Work of Joe Guss Chief Justice Baxter, president of the provincial council of the Boy Scouts Association, paid tribute today to the devotion of Joseph Guss to the scout movement. 'It was with great regret and a deep sense of personal loss that I learned of the death of Mr. Guss,' said His Lordship. 'He was the life of scouting and scouting was life to him. 'No task was ever given him that he did not accept joyfully and eagerly. Nor was it necessary to get tasks for him. He found them for himself. Many a time when full of health and energy he came into my office, he brought suggestions for things to be done and volunteered to do them. 'When his health broke down, we all thought that his wonderful physique would soon restore him, but as the months passed by we had our doubts. At last it looked as if he were to enjoy his work and we to enjoy his doing it. But it was not to be, and now he must be counted among our remembrances. To his wife and family there will be sympathy from all Scouts, far and near. There will be no Gilwell Camp for a long time at which there will not be noticed a vacant place which only Joe could fill. But his spirit, transcending race and creed, abides with us in the great brotherhood of those whose endeavor is the service of humanity, and to be helpful to those who need. The Telegraph Journal Monday, July 21, 1941 News of the sudden passing of Joseph Guss of this city at the General Hospital early this morning after an illness of but a day was learned with keen regret by many friends throughout the Maritimes. Mr. Guss, who took a prominent part in scouting leadership in this province for a number of years, had only recently finished a period of convalesence from a serious illness which invalided him for two years. His long and faithful record in scouting was climaxed in September of 1939 when Sir Perry Everett, deputy Imperial commisioner for Boy Scouts, presented Mr. Guss with the Scout Medal of Merit. The medal is awarded for distinguished service to scouting; it was the first time in the Dominion that it had been presented by the personal representative of the late chief scout, Lord Baden-Powell. Friend of Baden-Powell The event had an extra significance for the popular young man, for it was he who officially greeted the chief scout when the latter visited the province in 1935. Out of that association grew a warm, personal friendship that was continued up until 'B.-P's' death. The presentation was made in the General Hospital where Mr. Guss was a patient at the time. Dominion provincial and district scout officials were present. He had been associated with scouting since 1924, when the Young Judaean (13th Saint John) troop was organized. He became assistant scoutmaster of the troop and then assistant and provincial secretary and assistant district commissioner. He was on the headquarters staff of the Maritime Gilwell Scout Camp for a number of years, and held the 'Gilwell Beads' His activities in scouting brought him in contact with thousands of Boy Scouts throughout the province and his leadership ability was proved time and again. U.N.B. Law Graduate A son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Guss, 4 Summer Street, he was born in this city and attended the public schools here, graduating from the Saint John High School. He entered the University of New Brunswick Law School and received the degree of B.C.I. in 1934. In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, he was a student of St. Joseph's University when it held its classes here and became a member of the St. Patrick's Society. During the year when he was taking courses from the two universities he found time to work as an insurance salesman, Boy Scout chairman of the law school debating committee and secretary of the Playgrounds Association. He was also secretary of the Saint John Branch of the League of Nations Society. The Telegraph Journal Tuesday, July 22, 1941 Many At Funeral Of Joseph Guss - Large Number of Floral Tributes Received By Scout Leader Men and women from all walks of life attended the funeral of Joseph (Joe) Guss held yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock from Chamberlain's Funeral Home, 115 King Street East. Including among those present were Chief Justice Baxter, president of the provincial council of the Boy Scouts Association, and several other district Scout officials, all paying tribute to the memory of Mr. Guss who was prominent in scout leadership for many years. Service was conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb and Chief Justice Baxter spoke as the grave received. Interment was made in the Hebrew plot at Fernhill Cemetery. - OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, January 21, 1949, Page 9 Morris Guss Dies At Home In City – Was Widely-known Resident; Active in Bussiness Life; Funeral Held A wide circle of friends learned with regret this morning of the death of Morris Guss, founder of the British Iron and Metal Company, which occurred at an early hour at his residence, 4 Summer Street. He was born in Lithuania, a son of Benjamin and Sarah Guss. He had been a resident of Saint John for 44 years. He was 71 years of age and retired from business some time ago. For more than 40 years he was warden of the Jewish Congregation in Saint John. In recognition of his services he was made the only honorary life member of the board of directors of the congregation. He was an active member of the board of directors of the congregation. He was an active member of the board until his retirement. He was also active in other organizations connected with the synagogue, including charitable bodies and was a member of the Ezra Lodge. Mr. Guss established his business here in 1905. He was a highly respected citizen, of kindly disposition, a charitable and upright gentleman and a man of dignity. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Max Fransblow of this city, four sons, B. R. Guss, and John Guss, all of Saint John and William of Calgary, nine grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces. Another son, Joseph, who was prominent in the boy scout movement in N.B. died about seven and one half years ago. The funeral was held this afternoon from the synagogue at 4 p.m. Interment was in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.199.
