OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, September 1, 2010 Peacefully, at home, surrounded by family, G. Anne Elman passed away on Monday August 30, 2010. Born in Saint John on July 11th, 1927 to Charles and Edna (Ward) Harrington. Anne was a free spirited, creative, and passionate woman, who touched the lives of so many in the community. A graduate of the Fine Arts Department of Saint John Vocational School, Anne moved to Nova Scotia where she was active in radio and theatre, with the Dominion Drama Festival, the Theatre Arts Guild, and C.B.C. Radio plays. Upon returning to Saint John, Anne was employed with the Art Department of the New Brunswick Museum, where she taught art classes, trained docents, and assisted in the selection of paintings for the Canadian Art Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal. An active volunteer in the community, she was a member of the Sisterhood of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation and the Canadian Haddassah Wizo, taught Hebrew School, mentored the Young Judea youth group, and volunteered with schools and community events. Anne was the founder and director of The Children’s Drama Workshop and Company of Young Actors, and loved sharing her time and passion with hundreds of children who worked with her. She was recognized by the City of Saint John in 2005 for her 20 years of contributing to theatre in Saint John, as well being the recipient of the New Brunswick Day Merit Award for Arts and Culture in 1992. Anne was a visual artist, playwright, teacher, mentor, and friend. Anne is survived by her husband and best friend, Daniel, her three children: Morgan Leigh (Toronto), Kate, and David (Saint John), son-in-law Michael, 2 beloved grandchildren (her pride and joy) Elijah and Sophie, and sister Gladys Cunningham (Toronto). Funeral will be Wednesday, September 1st at 2 p.m. at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, followed by a graveside service at the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Traditional Shiva will take place at her home 178 Horsler Drive at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. until Friday morning. Prior to her passing, the Arts community established the Anne Elman Scholarship for Children in the Arts. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 22, 1968 S. I. Everett Laid To Rest (attached photo) Funeral services for Samuel I. Everett of 114 Connors Street, Saint John West, were held Sunday afternoon at the Calvin Funeral Home (Hillsley Chapel). Mr. Everett, a well-known tobacconist and sportsman, died unexpectedly at his residence early Sunday morning. He was 53. Mr. Everett had been proprietor of Sam's Smoke Shop, 511 Main Street, since 1947 and was part-owner of Bolorama Lanes, Union Street. Born in Saint John on September 19, 1914, Mr. Everett was the son of John and Sarah (Jacobson) Everett. He was a member of Congregation Sharrei Zedek and B'nai Brith. He achieved his greatest sporting success n the field of bowling where he earned the nickname, 'The Rifle,' for his exploits until his retirement from active participation three years ago. He was one of the first men to roll a 400 tripple in New Brunswick Candlepin Championships and his 428 in 1963 set a record that stood until recently He was also member of several provincial and Maritime championship teams, bowling for Saint John, Central, CYO and Bowlarama Lanes. In his earlier years, Mr. Everett also played on several local baseball, hockey, and softball teams and was an amateur boxer. For a time, he promoted boxing shows in the city and also was known as an amateur historian, particularly in boxing and baseball. The service was conducted by Rabbi Benjamin Issenberg. Pallbearers were: Bernard Bloom, Philip Hamburg, Norman Hamburg, Lewis Aranoff, William Meltzer, Bernard Freedman, and I. J. Davis. Among the many floral tributes were those from: Management and staff, Baxter Dairies Limited; Management and staff Rink Service Station, Main Street; Management and staff Lord Beaverbrook Rink. Among the many donations to Canadian Heart Foundation were from G. H. Hamilton and Sons Limited; Men's Bowlarama House League; Saint John News Company Limited; Saint John Boxing Commission; Regal Wholesale Limited; Lanes Bakery Limited; Club 69; Bowlarama Bowling League; managing editor and news department, Telegraph Journal and Evening Time Globe; and Bowlarama Ladies Bowling League. Surviving are his wife the former Beatrice Y. Cohen; a son, Jon David, of Saint John; two daughters, Mrs. Hebert Leopald, Hicksville N.Y., and Miss Cheryl Sheila, a student in Boston; a brother, B. H. Everett, Saint John; and a sister, Mrs. Bertram Katz, New Rochelle, N.Y.; three grandchildren and several nephews and nieces Interment took place in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery.
