He was 86 years of age. Mr. Wiezel was the founder of Wiezel’s Shoe Store, a venture in which he was later joined by his brother Joseph, and was well known in gardening circles. Born in Tziget, Hungary, son of the late Michael and Deborah (Stern) Wiezel, he spent his early years in Hungary before spending some time in Scotland and finally arriving in Saint John in 1903. With his brother he built the largest shoe business in the Maritimes and Herman Wiezel pioneered the theory of fitting shoes properly, which was a new concept in Canada. His love for farming and gardening was such that he experimented extensively and succeeded in growing plants foreign to this area. He produced grapes and melons and was an exert on native fruit and vegetables. Mr. Wiezel was an ardent mason and was an accomplished linguist, able to speak English, Hungarian, German, Romanian, and Swedish fluently. He also had some knowledge of Polish. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, March 14, 1960 Wiezel - At Saint John, March 12, 1960, Joseph Wiezel, 241 Union Street, son of the late Mitchell and Dora (Stern) Wiezel leaving one brother, three sisters, several nieces and nephews. Funeral from the vestry of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue on Monday afternoon with service at 2 o'clock. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. The Evening Times Globe Monday, March 14, 1960, page 13 Mr. Joseph Wiezel A prominent Saint John merchant, Joseph Wiezel of 241 Union Street, died of a seizure while en route to his store on Saturday morning, he was 72 years of age. President of Wiezel Bros. Ltd., 78 King Street, Mr.Wiezel had been associated with the shoe business in Saint John for more than 50 years. He had been a resident of Canada since 1905, and was also president of Wallace Bros. Limited in Halifax up to his death. He formed a partnership with his brother Herman Wiezel and together the firm operated a number of stores in the city during the last half century. The firm opened its first store on Union Street in 1908 and the enterprising brothers built up a major business during the years that followed., Another store was opened at the corner of Charlotte and Union Streets in 1927. Following a fire in 1928,.the company opened its King Street Store. Born In Hungary Mr. Wiezel was born in Satra Mezo, Hungary, a son of the late Mitchell and Dora (Stern) Wiezel. His birthplace is now part of Rumania having ceded to that country by the Treaty of Versailles. Mr. Wiezel received his early education in Hungary and also studied at the Hebrew College there. He came to Canada with his parents. After entering business in this country, Mr. Wiezel was always ready to assist in any worthy undertaking. He was an active member of the Rotary Club and will be remembered as a generous contributor to all philanthropic organizations. He was a member of the Canadian Club and in fraternal circles was identified with the Masonic fraternity. Highly esteemed by his business associates and a wide circle of personal friends, Mr. Wiezel's passing will bring regret to all who knew him. He took an active part in the affairs of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek Surviving are one brother, Herman F. Wiezel of Saint John who is vacationing in Florida; three sisters, Mrs. M. Feldman, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Mrs. Jack Zuckerman of New York and Miss Doris Wiezel of Saint John, several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Samuel Davis, Clinton M. Wiezel and Lawrence Earl all of Saint John. The largely attended funeral was held this afternoon from the vestry of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue with service conducted by Rabbi David Spiro of Fredericton. Interment was in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. The Evening Times Globe Monday, March 14, 1960, page 4 Mr. Joseph Wiezel (editorial) Questioned once about his hobbies, Mr. Joseph Wiezel, who death on Saturday is sadly recorded, replied with the single word 'work'. That probably accounts for the fact that both he and his brother, Mr. Herman F. Wiezel, achieved such outstanding success in their half century long partnership in the retail shoe business in Saint John and Halifax. Coming in Canada with their parents as young boys from Safo Mezo in Hungary, now part of Rumania as of the territorial changes brought about by the Treaty of Versailles, both worked for a long time on farms before deciding to launch their first business venture here. In May of 1958 they observed the 50th anniversary of that successful venture as the owners of what then had long been one of the most modern and best known shoe trade establishments in Eastern Canada. Despite the fact that the late Mr. Wiezel has listed 'work' as his only hobby, he had found time during a busy life to identify himself with many community affairs, especially as an active member of the Rotary Club, of the Maritime Fraternity and of the Congregation of Shaarei Zedek, all of which held his special interest. His passing from the scene of his business and community activities will be widely mourned by a host of associates, friends and acquaintances. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.451. Memorial plaque in synagogue: Abraham E. Smith - C3. Additional notes: shoe store - Wiezel Brothers
