- Able Seaman Irving Epstein of Montreal, Quebec, died in the fire in the Knight of Columbus Hostel at St. John’s, Newfoundland. He enlisted in the reserve army in June 1940 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in November 1940. Two brothers and a sister were in the service: Sapper Saul Epstein, R.C.E. overseas; Manny, R.C.N.V.R.; and Mary, with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps.
