October 1992 Program: Shalom Ottawa opens a brand new season with a Rosh Hashanah program. Marion visits Lapoints Fish Market where Barry Shulman makes gefilte fish from pike, pickeral and carp. Ed Fine interviews Dr. Maureen Malot, president of the Ottawa Jewish Council who speaks about the year in review and upcoming plans for 1993. Next, the Israella Singers sing selections for Slichot and Rabbi Arnold Fine explains the meaning of slichot prayers in preparation for Rosh Hoshanah. November 1992 Program: Ed Fine and Marion Silver broadcast live from the Byward Market; the centre of Jewish life for many years. Ed Fine interviews Irving Rivers about the changes in the market over the years. He recalls that the Talmad Torah was on George Street, where the Salvation Army building now stands. Joel Diener of Saslove's Meats is also interviewed about life in the market. He has fond memories of buying meat at the Greeley Sale Barn. Rabbi Saul Aaronov and Esther Bilsky speak about early religious life in Ottawa. Esther recalled Reverend Mirsky performing ritual slaughters in the backyard. He was brought to Ottawa by Rev. Bilsky. Next, Sam Zunder from Zunder's Fruit Land is interviewed. Gallery owner Lynda Greenberg discusses artwork on display at her gallery located in the Byward market. December 1992 Program: Marion Silver interviews Mayor Jackie Holzman who reflects on her first year in office. She explains that she wants to get her house in order. Ed Fine interviews 12 year old Jory Steinberg who performs in Les Miserables. Marion Silver visits children at the Jewish Community Centre where they are making chocolate Hanukah gelt. January 1993 Program: Ed Fine visits the Ottawa Jewish Artists Guild show during Arts Alive called "Genesis". Artists Murry Pinchuk, Barbara Nathan Marcus, Violetta Borosonik, Avril Bright, Kenneth Vincent and Dora Litwack. Marion interviews Michael Strassberg about youth programs in Israel. Rubin Lightstone and Margorie Sarazen perform ballroom dancing at Hillel Lodge for residents. They tell Ed Fine that they hope to motivate others to start dancing. February 1993 Program: Shalom Ottawa visits Maimonades shool for Tu B'Shevat seder and enjoy eating fruits from Israel. Rabbi Mordechai Berger and Devorah Teitolbaum are interviewed. Next, Scout master Howie Osterer and various boy scouts from the 39th Scout Troup are seen organizing donations for the Ottawa Food Bank. Steve Harper and Dick Hudson are interviewed. Guest host Phyllis Elowitz interviews Sarah Poster-Levin about the services and endeavors of Na'amat to improve the lives and opportunities of women in Israel. Phil Kretzmar and the Ottawa Israeli Folk Dancers were taped last summer performing in Vincent Park. March 1993 Program: Marion Silver speaks to Gloria Mound about the history of Jews in Majorca and the Bali Eric Islands. Michael Tapeiro and Gaby Sassoon representing the Ottawa Sephardic community and the Ottawa Turkinsh community speak to Ed about a photographic exhibit of 500 years of Jewish Life in Turkey. Next, a fashion show of Caftans from Montreal at the Jewish Community Centre is presented by Marion. April 1993 Program: A special edition of The Holocaust as History. The Yom Ha' Shoa memorial service and candle lighting ceremony. Dr. Guita Tyrangel-Ben Ezra speaks about the Holocaust. "What Do We Tell Our Children About The Holocaust?" Ed Fine presents a studio panel of Mendel Good, Vera Gera and Sunny Tavel. Three participants of the March of the Living: Jason Shinder, Debbie Stone and Laurie Schildkraut speak about this moving experience. May 1993 Program: Footage of Yom Ha'atsmaut celebration. Sarit Aronov sings Hatikvah. Lawrence Greenspoon, president of the Ottawa Jewish Community Centre speaks. Hagit Hadaya tours the new Machzikei Hadas synagogue which won the 1992 Heritage award for Synagogue architecture. Rabbi Reuven Bulka speaks about the intimate feeling created by the the design of the sanctuary. Paul Bregman and Ted Tromanhauser of FOIL (Forging Ottawa Israeli Links) speak about the goals of building business ties between industry in Ottawa and Israel. Harrison Richary and Micheal Fine provide a "Kids Eye View" at a Hillel Academy Passover Sedar.

October 1991 Program: Dr. Maureen Molot is presented with a Golden Star Award for "Shalom Ottawa" which she intends to hang in the Vaad office. Footage of a community rally for Syrian Jews. Rabbi Reuven Bulka speaks about the plight of the estimated 4500 Jews who are not allowed to leave Syria. The Honourable Herb Gray speaks as well. Ed Fine interviews Rabbi Bulka who is co-chair of the Soviet and World Jewry Committee. Ed Fine speaks wth Dr. Maureen Malot about the Jewish community, the challenges and priorities including the finalizing of a site for a new Jewish Community Centre and operation Exodus. November 1991 Program: Ed Fine and Marion Silver speak about a live show of singing and dancing called "Orot Hashchuna". Footage from the show is then shown. Philip Gennis (former host of Shalom Ottawa) speaks about Project Renewal in Israel which provides aid to depressed regions of Israel. Ottawa is twinned with four communities. Donna Klaiman is interviewed along with Sandra Kesselman-Hardy about a new program they have developed to visit the sick and train Palliative caregivers in Ottawa. The program ends with more footage of the Orot Hashchuna show. December 1991 Program: Program opens with a sunset Chanuka ceremony on Parliament Hill. MP Herb Gray is present at the Mennorah lighting ceremony. Marion Silver speaks with Chabad House representative Rabbi Zirkin who organized the event. Ed Fine speaks with Ian Kagedan, Director of Government relations of B'nai B'rith Canada about the relevance of Chanukah to Jewish identity today. Marion Mayman and Donna Dolansky explain Haddasah - Wizo aid program to Ethiopian immigrant children. A children's fashion show held at Temple Israel is the next event covered by Ed Fine. He interviews children modelling clothes in the show. Children from Hillel Academy's Children Choir sing Chanukah songs at the Museum of Civilization. February 1991 Program: Mike Silver interviews other children at a Purim celebration. Ed and Marion visit the "A Taste of Chocolate" show at the Skyline Hotel and talk to exhibitors and chocolate lovers. Dr. Ruth speaks to brides about sex, love and marriage at a seminar. She later speaks about the influence of her Jewish religion in her life. She said that becoming an orphan at the age of 10 made her serious about issues of family life at an early age. Rabbi Finkelstein joins Ed in the studio to talk about artificial insemination as a matter of Halacha (Jewish Law). March 1992 Program: This is a Purim edition. Marion interviews Dr. Dina Sabbah about the Spanish expulsion of Jews and Sephardic traditions. Rabbi Finkelstein speaks about abortion with Ed Fine. Ian Kagedan speaks with Ed about anti-semitism and increased targeted, racist incidents in Ottawa over recent years. Ed visited seniors attending the Seniors Drop In Diner at the Jewish Community Centre. Ricky Baker, the co-ordinator of this program is interviewed. April 1992 Program: Ed and Marion visit the Purim Carnival at the Jewish Community Centre. Mike Fine and friend Harrison Richard provide "A Kid's Eye View" segment with interviews of other children. Marion visits the Kardish family bakery and learns about the history of the family from Annie Kardish-Brozovsky. Ivan Glusic, a long-time employee and Lewis Kardish are also interviewed. Ari Van Mansum is interviewed by Marion about how he saved many Jews during the Holocaust. He felt he was doing his Christian duty and considers the people he saved as part of his family. He was honoured to be named a righteous gentile by the Jewish community. Marion also interviewed two hidden children who were brought up as Catholics during World War II. Genya Ben Ezra was hidden for 3 years in Poland and Paul Vet was sent away in 1942 from his home in Amsterdam. May 1992 Program: The program starts with footage of a seder held with Tamir Foundation residents and their families. Ed Fine covered an early rehearsal of the production "Chicago" where he interviews directors, cast and crew. Ann Frank in the World exhibit in the Canadian War Museum is seen along with speakers, readings from her diary and a choir. The program ends with footage of the arrival of Russian & Ethiopian Jewish immigrants in Israel. June 1992 Program: Rabbi Finkelstein speaks to Ed Fine about the Right to Die as it pertains to Halacha. Marion Silver interviews Ottawa Post of Jewish War Veteran Jack Nisenthal about his participation during the invasion of Dieppe and cracking German radar and disarming German communications. Ed Fine speaks with Rabbi Reuven Bulka about the future of Canada and Quebec separation.

Cantor Steven Chaiet of the Beth Shalom congregation speaks to Marion about the history of and significance of the Kol Nidre prayer. He then sings this beautiful song written in the aramaic language. The program ends with footage of square dancing couples performing indoors at Scentorama. October 1993 Program: Rona Levine, Chair of Arts Alive speaks about the programs this year. Marion Neuman and Terry Swartzville of Hadassah - Wizo speak to Ed about work of the organization to support women and children in Israel on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Hadassah Wizo. They view a display showing the history of this group in Ottawa and a youth Aliyah display. Next, Rabbi Ely Braun is interviewed by Marion. He talks about his decision to become a congregational rabbi at Beth Shalom synagogue and his goal to develop a sense of family within the congregation. November 1993 Program: Ed Fine interviews Mordecai Richler. No Sound. Ed Fine and Marion at Arts Alive. No Sound. Next segment includes various testimonials from various people for the United Jewish Appeal. No Sound. Sound starts during interview with co-chairs of the campaign and Sam Firestone, chair. The program ends with Ed and Marion at Arts Alive festival. December 1993 Program: This program starts with the candle lighting ceremony indoors at Parliament Hill. Allen Kirshner reports and Mayor Jacquelin Holzman speaks about the meaning of Chanuka. Cantor Steven Chaiet of congregation Beth Shalom sings as the candles are lit. Host Reesa Aaron visits Rikki Grebler in her home to view her interesting Hanakiot collection. Author Phebe Gilman explains the origin and inspirations for her award winning book "Something from Nothing. She researched the schetl of her grandparents' generation to come up with authentic illustrations. The segment ends after she reads this wonderful children's story. Cantor Pinchas Levinson from Machzikei Hadas finishes the program with a medley of Hanukah songs. January 1994 Program: Rabbi Reuven Bulka speaks to Marion about his new book "Jewish Divorce Ethics" and the implications of a higher divorce rate for the Jewish community. Marion interviews Zelaine Shinder about the resources at the Jewish Education Resource Centre for the general community and educators in Ottawa. The centre, located at 881 Broadview Ave., is sponsored by the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa. Next, author Chaim Potok is interviewed by Marion. He talks about growing up in an orthodox Jewish home during the 1940's and 1950's. He states his books are a model to try to explain to himself how individuals handle cultural confrontations. This segment was videotaped by Jonathon Feldman. The program ends with footage of couples dancing at Agudath Israel to the Big Band sounds of Benny G. Unknown month - Special program on Racism in Schools. Marion and Ed host a panel of guests who speak about anti-semitic incidents in the schools. Later, students from Nepean High School ask questions of the panelists about raising awareness and sensitivity to racism in schools. Panel members include: Ian Kagedan, Dir. of Government Relations of B'nai B'rith Canada, Constable Dan Dunlop of the Bias Crime Unit of the Ottawa Police, Lorne Rachlis, Superintendent of Schools for the Ottawa Board of Education, Ron Singer, Chairman of CRC Ottawa. April 1993 Program: Ed Fine visits the Ottawa Jewish Community Centre Library on Chapel St. He interviews Librarian Estelle Backman who describes the collection and library patrons. Ed also visits an informal singing group called Unzer Gezang who get together in people's homes to sing in Yiddish. Jackie Laugzner and Abe Rosenfeld are interviewed about the experience. May 1994 Program: Abigail Rabinowitz of the Teeny Tots and Tikes Culture Club is interviewed by Shelley Samel. Next, Murray Cohen of the Design Association is interviewed about his firms work on a needs analysis for building a new city hall in downtown Jerusalem which will bring together many offices spread out across the city. Ian Kagedan, Dir. of Government Relations of B'nai B'rith Canada speaks about his research into right-wing extremist groups and his work to raise public awareness of this issue. June 1994 Program: Ed and Marion visit Hillel Academy. Ed interviews Stan Katz, outgoing Director of Education about his experience over the last 10 years. Highlights of "Schindler's List" author Thomas Keneally's speech at the Chateau Laurier appear next. Footage of Hillel Academy's Siddur Ceremony ends the program and the 1993 - 1994 season.

October 1994 Program - The opening show of the season is broadcast from the 60th anniversary of the Ottawa Va'ad Ha'ir UJA Campaign kickoff. Malcolm Hoenleln is the keynote speaker. The program then features a segment from the play "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" directed by Greg Simpson. Marion Silver interviews actors Tara Story & Jamie Wisniowski. The show ends with members of the Kagedan family who explain the Harvest festival in their family Succah. November 1994 Program - Rabbi Eli Braun of Beth Shalom, a trained therapist and Chuck Rotenberg discuss treatment and resources for addicts in the Jewish community in Ottawa. Rabbi Braun spoke about the JACD (Jewish Addicts Chemically Dependents) 12 -step support program which came out of New York. Herman Roodman sang and was interviewed by Ed Silver about his volunteer performances at Hillel Lodge and elsewhere. Rabbi Howard Finkelstein of Beth Shalom West discusses domestic abuse. December 1994 Program - The program begins with Governor General Ramon Hnatyshyn presenting the congregation Machzikei Hadas with a Coat of Arms. This was the first time in the Commonwealth that a Coat of Arms was granted to a synagogue. The charter was awarded as a record of the community's generosity to charitable causes and contribution to society. The President of the Ottawa Va'ad Ha'ir (Jewish Community Council) Dr. Bernard Dolansky is interviewed about various issues such as the JCC and allocations for local causes vs. Israel and education. He feels that it is within the capacity of the Ottawa Jewish Community to raise 13 million dollars for a new facility. January 1995 Program: Ed Silver interviews author Warren Kinsella about the topic of right-wing, fringe groups and his book "Web of Hate". Marion interviews Rabbi Bulka and H. E. Ramond Hnatyshyn at congregation Machzechei Hadas after the awards ceremony. Allen Kirshner talks to "King of Kensington" Al Waxman about his interest in charitable causes, especially those that involve children. Marion and Ed speak about upcoming Tu B'shevat. February 1995 Program: Clive Lawton, Chief Executive for the Jewish Community in the United Kingdom speaks about Jewish community in Britain where 70% are affiliated with synagogues. Jane Enkin and Justin Lewis perform songs and storytelling in Yiddish during Arts Alive. Bronwyn Drainie (Globe & Mail columnist and journalist) speaks about her experience living in Israel for two years and her new book "My Jerusalem". She came to have a greater sympathy for Arabs and a greater respect for the Jewish religion as a result of her time there. April 1995 Program - Mr. Herman Roodman asks children the four questions in preparation for the Passover seder and sings with them. A panel group discusses Israel and the Diaspora in the studio with Ed Fine. Guest panelists include Eli Yerushalmi, Counselor with the Embassy of Israel and Ayala Schecter, principal of Akiva High School as well as Stan Urman, the Executive Director of Jewish Community Council. He is cut off mid-sentence. May 1995 Program - Holocaust survivor Genya Ben Ezra tells Marion Silver about how her memories of this time had been suppressed until three years ago and how that has changed her life. March of the Living participant Lori Winestein reads a poem about her visit to Auswitz. Elazar Eliashev announces the winners and is interviewed at the Torah Fair at Hillel Academy. The program ends with an animated video of the Creation story by student Michael Fine. June 1995 Program - Hillel Academy Grade 2 students receive the Chumash. Ed Fine interviews Rubin Friedman, Director of Government Relations for B'nai B'rith Canada about hate crimes. Cantor Daniel Benlolo sings songs from the Sephardic tradition at Beth Shalom West.
