- OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, October 19, 1942 Boyaner – At her residence, 53 Elliot Row, on October 17, 1942, after several months of illness, Kate (Poyas) Boyaner, widow of Don Boyaner, survived by four sons, two daughters, one sister, six grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces. Body resting at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, from where the funeral will be held this (Monday) afternoon with service at 2:30 o’clock. Interment in Hebrew plot in Fernhill Cemetery. Mrs. K. Boyaner Dies at age of 73: Widow of former city Optometrist Passes at Home Here Mrs. Kate (Poyas) Boyaner, 73, widow of Don Boyaner, remembered by many older citizens as an optometrist in Saint John, who died over 32 years ago, passed away at her home, 53 Elliot Row, early Saturday evening after a long period of declining health. The surviving members of the immediate family are two daughters and four sons, Mrs. S. Goldfeather of this city is a sister. There are six grandchildren also. Mrs. Boyaner’s body is resting at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, King Street, East, where services will take place 2:30 o’clock this afternoon, when Rev. M. I. Beshkin and Rev. A. Babb of the local synagogue will officiate. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. Mrs. Boyaner had lived in this city for more than 50 years. She was a native of Warsaw, Poland. With her sister, Mrs. Goldfeather, and her late brother, Abram Poyas, watchmaker and jeweler in Saint John for over 40 years and latterly of New York, she came to Canada in her youth. She was married to Mr. Boyaner in Montreal and soon after took up residence here. Church worker A founder member of the Daughters of Israel Organization in this city, Mrs. Boyaner maintained a keen interest in the affairs of her church congregation until her illness. Charitable and hospitable, she endeared herself to a large number. She was for years a member of the Hospital Aid. The surviving daughters are Frances, wife of I. A. C. Norman Smith of the RCAF, and Bertha, wife of Lieut. Maurice Elman, with the Canadian dental corps at Winnipeg. The sons are Louis and Eli Boyaner, optometrists, this city; Harry I., Vancouver, who visited his mother during this last summer, and Captain Frank Boyaner, attached to the Canadian Forces Overseas. - OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, May 24, 1995 ELMAN – At the St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home on May 23, 1995, Mrs. Bertha (Boyaner) Elman of Horsler Drive, Saint John West, wife of the late Maurice Elman. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late Don and Kate(Poyas) Boyaner. Mrs. Elman was a member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek Sisterhood, and of the Henrietta Szold Chapter Hadassah WIZO. She was an active bridge player as well as being involved in theatricals. In her earlier years she was a Girl Guide leader as well as the Young Judean gymnastics team. She is survived by one son, Dan Elman and his wife of Anne of Saint John West, one daughter, Eleanor Givner and her husband, Dr. Morris Givner of Halifax, four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers and one sister. Funeral service will be held at 'Hillsley' Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street (634-1700) on Thursday May 25, 1995 at 3:30 p.m. Interment at the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery.
