- OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, July 21, 1993 Grosweiner – At her residence, 4 Candlewood Lane, on July 19, 1993, Mrs. Ella J. Grosweiner, widow of the late Sidney Grosweiner. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Bessie Lesser. She is survived by her daughter, Susan, and her husband, Dr. Murray Lieberman, of Edmonton, Alberta, her son, Martin Grosweiner, and his wife, Ann, of Fredericton, N.B., five granddaughters, two brothers, Dr. Joe Lesser, of California, and Dr. Arthur Lesser, of Hamilton, Ont., her sister-in-law, Dora Siegerman, several nieces and nephews. Resting at the Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Interment will be in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Donations to Hadassah-Wizo or to the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family. The Evening Times Globe Tuesday, July 20, 1993 Saint John's former cultural officer dies Ella J. Grosweiner, who promoted arts in Saint John as the city's cultural officer for 11 years, died Monday. Despite her claims that she had no specific talent, Grosweiner was active in the arts both on and off the job. In addition to acting as a liaison with the city's arts community, she managed the city's art gallery located in the Aitken Bicentennial Exhibition Centre. During her tenure as the city's cultural affairs officer, she represented the city to provincial and national arts groups and worked with community associations, such as the Bi-Capitol Project and the New City Theatre. She was involved with arts groups including the Saint John Art Club and the Saint John Multicultural Association. She retired as the city's cultural affairs officer in 1986. Grosweiner, widow of Sydney Grosweiner, said at her retirement that she developed her love for the arts while a teenager when she came down with rheumatic fever. A thirst for knowledge of art, music and literature kept these trying years bearable when she had to rest for long periods of time. She died at her residence at 4 Candlewood Lane. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Bessie Lesser. S. Ring and Staff of Ring Gallery of Art and Dr. Quinlan and Staff; donations to the V.O.N. (Saint John) Inc.; Symphony New Brunswick Inc.; Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, including one from Officers and Members of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum; NB Heart and Stroke Foundation; Hadassah Wizo Organization; Romero House-Soup Kitchen; Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception 'Restoration Fund'; Wickman Baptist Church; Memorial Fund; New Brunswick Extra Mural Hospital Foundation and to Saint John School Milk Fund. The Evening Times Globe Monday, January 15, 1990 Sidney Grosweiner – Sidney Grosweiner of the Ridgewood Veterans' Wing and formerly of 4 Candlewood Lane, Saint John, husband of Ella (Lesser) Grosweiner, died on Saturday at the Ridgewood Veterans' Wing after a lengthy illness. Born in Saint John, he was the son of the late Max and Ida Rubin Grosweiner. He served in the RCAF in the Second World War. For many years, he was a retail merchant, owner of Nu Mode Ladies' Apparel in Saint John. He was a life underwriter with Sun Life Assurance and general insurance agent for Mitchell O'Connell Insurance Ltd. Before his illness, he was active in community affairs, having served as president of the Saint John and Maritime Jaycees, president of the Saint John Merchants Association, and president of the Saint John YMHA. He held office in Saint John Lodge No. 2, F and AM, served on the boards of the Synagogue Shaarei Zedek, B'Nai Brith Lodge, Jewish Community Players, New Brunswick Museum, New Brunswick Historical Society, New Brunswick Cancer Society and the Saint John Art Club Inc. He was a member of the Jewish War Vets, the Shomer Club, and the Parkinson's Foundation of Canada. He is survived by his wife, Ella (Lesser) Grosweiner; one son, Martin Grosweiner, Fredericton; one daughter, Susan, Mrs. Murray Lieberman, Edmonton, Alta.; one sister Dora, Mrs. Thomas Siegerman, Toronto; five grandchildren, Brenda, Jill and Karen Lieberman, Edmonton, and Adrienne and Kate Grosweiner, Fredericton; cousins and several nieces and nephews. Donations were made to the Wickham Baptist Church New Brunswick; Canadian Red Cross Society, including one from the staff of Red Cross Arts and Crafts; New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation; and for the Parkinson Foundation of Canada, executive of the Saint John Art Club, Mayor and members of Common Council, Bi-Capitol Project and Foundation staff, Aitken Bicentennial Exhibition Centre, DOT Sign Shop staff, Local 486, Housekeeping and Receiving Ridgewood, N.B. Arts Council, management and staff of City Manager's Office, executive and members of the Soroptimist International Club and from the Saint John Arts Council. Interment took place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery with graveside prayers by Mr. Michaelson. A memorial service was held at the funeral home by officers and members of Saint John's Lodge No. 2 F and AM.
