- OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 17 1964 Dies Following Lengthy Illness Mrs. Clara Bernstein, wife of M. S. Bernstein of Saint John, died last evening in St. Joseph's Hospital, following a lengthy illness Born in Camden, N. J., May 15, 1902, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Goldfeather, and had resided in Saint John since 1903. Mrs. Bernstein was a life-long member of the Shaarei Zedek congregation. She was an active member of the Sisterhood of the synagogue and the Hadassah. She was also actively associated with the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music, the Ladies' Aid Society of the Saint John General Hospital, and with many charitable organizations. Besides her husband, Mrs. Bernstein is survived by a son, Mortimer, and a daughter, Mrs. E. R. Cohen, both of Saint John; two sister, Mrs. H. R. Cornblat, Saint John, and Mrs. S. B. Wampol, Chicago, Ill., one brother, Bernard Goldfeather, Saint John, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue at 2:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Fund of Trees in Israel. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.433. - OBITUARIES: Saint John Telegraph Journal, February 12, 2002 On February 11, 2002, Rose (Goldfeather) Cornblat formerly of Dufferin Avenue, the devoted wife of the late Hyman Cornblat, passed away peacefully at the Rocmaura Nursing Home. Born in Saint John in 1906, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Esther (Poyas) Goldfeather. Rose who celebrated her 96th birthday on February 6, was an avid reader who loved music, nature and walking. She had a wonderful sense of humour, a sharp wit and a kind and loving heart. She was fortunate to have enjoyed the friendship and loving devotion of her caregivers, Mary, Gerta and Lorraine and her extended family the caring Sisters and devoted staff of Rocmaura Nursing Home. Rose was employed with her late husband as Insurance Adjustors for Kilgour Hamilton. She was a member of the Sisterhood of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue and the Hadassah Organization of Canada. She is survived by one daughter Lynn Rice of Saint John, one brother, Dr. Bernard Goldfeather of Loch Lomond Villa, two grandchildren Earl (Lynn) and Kevin (Bonnie) Rice, five great-grandchildren Zachary, Natasha, Michael, Raylene and Amber, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she is predeceased by one brother Louie and two sisters Clara Bernstein and Fay Yampol, one great-grandson Brandon. The funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at 4:00 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. - OBITUARIES: Saint John Telegraph Journal, April 13, 2004 1909-2004 – Bernard L. Goldfeather of Saint Johnn, N.B. passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital April 12 at the age of 94 years. Born in Saint John, N.B. on October 25, 1909. He was the son of the late Samuel and Esther (Poyas) Goldfeather. He is survived by his loving daughter, Lainie Goldman of San Diego, CA and several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Fritzie (Cohen), brother Louis, sisters Clara (Bernstein), Faye (Yampol), Rose (Cornblat). Bernie was a Doctor of Optometry, following in his father’s footsteps. He practiced in Saint John for over 30 years. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. In his years of retirement his greatest joy was making new friends, bringing a smile to their faces, and sharing life experiences. Funeral service will be held graveside at Fernhill Cemetery on Tuesday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home (634-7424). Resting at Chandler’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday with service at 2 o’clock. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. The Evening Times Globe Wednesday, July 21, 1954 Retired Business man Succumbs – Samuel Goldfeather Had Been Widely-Known Optometrist In City Ill for the last five weeks, Samuel Goldfeather, well-known retired optometrist, died this morning at the Whitehall Nursing Home, Grand Bay. He was 83 years of age. A resident of Saint John for more than 50 years, he was the founder of the firm of S. Goldfeather and Son, optometrists, and had taken a prominent part in the work of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek in the city. Born in Poland, he was a son of the late Isaac and Hinda (Mindel) Goldfeather. He came to Canada when a young man. For many years he was the proprietor of an optometrist shop on Dock Street and still later on Mill Street. In recent years his office had been located on North King Square. He resided at 89 Elliott Row. In 1898, he married the former Miss Esther Poyas, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Morton Poyas. The couple marked the golden anniversary of their marriage in 1948. Mrs. Goldfeather died in March, 1952. During his residence here, Mr. Goldfeather was a member of the Zionist Lodge of Habonim. He is one of the oldest members of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek, having been a member since its foundation. Mr. Goldfeather retired several years ago. He entered the Saint John General Hospital five weeks ago and for the last 10 days had been convalescing at the nursing home. Surviving are one son, Bernard Goldfeather Saint John, who was associated with his father in business, three daughters, Mrs. Mitchell Bernstein and Mrs. H. Cornblatt of Saint John and Mrs. S.B. Yampol, Chicago, Ill., and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The body is resting at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday with service at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, August 5, 2013, August 7, 2013, http://www.brenansfh.com/obituaries/81391 Lorne Elkin Rozovsky, lawyer, author, educator, and human rights advocate, died August 5, 2013 at his home in Bloomfield, Conn., after a 15-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 70. A native of Timmins, Ontario Mr. Rozovsky spent his latter years in the United States after a distinguished career in Canada, where he was made Queen’s Counsel in Nova Scotia. He authored 18 books and more than 600 articles on health law. He also wrote on Jewish customs and laws, published online by Chabad.org. Before entering private practice, Mr. Rozovsky served as Legal Counsel to the Ministry of Health in Nova Scotia. A past member of the faculties of Law, Medicine and Dentistry at Dalhousie University in Halifax, he was instrumental in establishing the Health Law Institute. A student writing award at the Institute was recently established to honor Mr. Rozovsky and his wife. Among his books were The Canadian Patient’s Book of Rights, AIDS and Canadian Law, and Canadian Hospital Law, the first book on the subject published in Canada. He was the only Canadian to be named an honorary fellow for life by the American College of Legal Medicine. In 2012, he was named an honorary Kentucky Colonel by the governor of that state. Mr. Rozovsky believed in serving every community in which he lived. In Canada, he gave "Concerts in Historic Settings," worked with special needs children in the Halifax Junior Bengal Lancers, and served as the Atlantic representative to the National Ballet of Canada. In the United States, Mr. Rozovsky served on town committees in Bloomfield and was a past President of Temple Beth-El in Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Rozovsky was facile at creating ecumenical bonds; among his close friends were faculty members at Providence College in Rhode Island, a Catholic, Dominican school and the alma mater of his wife and sons. A son of the late Hyman and Gladys (Freiman) Rozovsky, Mr. Rozovsky was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick and the University of Toronto. He is survived by his wife, Fay (nee Frank) Rozovsky, and their two sons, Joshua and Aaron, and his beloved beagles, Tevye and Motl. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2013, at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery in Saint John, New Brunswick. Shiva will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Rozovsky’s honor to the Saint John Jewish Museum, Beagles of New England States (B.O.N.E.S), the Rozovsky Memorial Lecture Series at the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation-Emek Shalom, The Theological Exchange Between Catholics and Jews at Providence College, or a charity of your choice.
