- OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 5, 1997 Guss – In Toronto, Ontario on May 2, 1997, Mr. Jack Guss of Toronto and formerly of Saint John, husband of the late Jean Frieda (Takiff) Guss. Born in Saint John he was the son of the late Cyra (Hans) and Morris Guss. Mr. Guss is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Guss of Montreal and Monica Guss of Los Angeles, one sister Ida Fransblow and her husband Max of Saint John, three sisters-in-law, Mildred, Rose, and Bernetta, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Benjamin, Joseph, William, Abraham, and Philip. The funeral service will be held at 'Hillsley' Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street (634-1700) on Monday May 5, 1997 at 2 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Donations to Shaarei Zedek Synagogue or New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.439. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, March 25, 1997 At the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday, March 23, 1997, S. David Lubin. Survived by his loving wife Susan Isaacs–Lubin, and one son, Jeffrey N. Lubin (Diane) of Antwerp, Belgium. One granddaughter Caroline Lubin of New York. Also several cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his first wife Goldie (Fine) Lubin in 1979. David was born in Minsk, USSR on July 16, 1917. His parents were Pesach (Percy) and Frieda (Margolian) Lubin. Father Pesach was higly reputed as a Talmudic Scholar. The family emigrated to Canada in 1922 and settled in Yarmouth, N.S., where David graduated from the Yarmouth County Academy. A veteran of WWII, following war service he owned and operated retail shoe stores in both Saint John and Moncton – Lubin’s Model Shoes. He discontinued the shoe business in 1969, and entered the investment industry firms in Saint John prior to joining McLeod Young Weir as manager in 1977. David remained with the firm, now Scotia McLeod until his passing. He served a term as President of the Saint John Chapter Investment Dealers Association of Canada and pioneered education courses in personal investments. He was a former member of the Westfield Golf Club and the Riverside Golf Club. For many years he was associated with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and the Community Concerts Association, including two terms as president of the latter. During his residency in Saint John from April 1939, David was a member of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation and held various offices on its Board of Directors. David was a lay reader for the Jewish community at the Cenotaph each year for November 11th day services. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. from Hillsley Funeral Home, 91 Leinster St., with interment at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donation be made to the Saint John Jewish Historical Musuem, 633-1833, or a charity of the donors choice. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, August 15, 1952, Page 5 Takiff – At the Saint John General Hospital, August 14, 1952, Max Takiff, 35, survived by one brother, Frank Takiff of Greenville Station, N.S., and one sister, Mrs., Jack Guss, Saint John. Funeral Service will be held afternoon from Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East, at 2 o’clock. The Telegraph Journal Friday, August 15, 1952, page 16 Ill Two Weeks, Dies in Hospital Many friends will learn with regret of the death of Max Takiff, 35, which occurred at the General Hospital yesterday after an illness of one week. Mr. Takiff was born in Moncton and was a member of the Jewish Congregation in that city for several years. Of retiring and kindly nature, he was active in community work and was widely known by a host of friends. He is survived by a brother, Frank Takiff of Greenville Station, N.S., with whom he made his home in recent years, and a sister, Mrs. Jack Guss of Saint John.
