OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 18, 1987 The death of Mrs. Nellie Hoffman of 100 Leinster Street, widow of Myer Hoffman, occurred on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Esther (Goldschlager) Stern and had lived the greater part of her life in Saint John. She was a member of the Women’s Symphony Orchestra of Saint John, the Congregation of Shaarei Zedek and of the Sisterhood-Hadassah. She is survived by three daughters, Bernice, Mrs. Marvin Shapiro of Kensington, Calif., Phyllis, Mrs. Morton Civen of Seal Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Louise Milota of Saint John; six grandchildren, two sisters, three brothers, and several nephews and nieces. The body is resting at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the charity of donor’s choice. There will be no visiting at the funeral home. She was a daughter of the late Louis and Esther Hoffman. Born in Montreal, Que., she lived most of her life in Bridgewater where, with her husband, she ran Hoffman’s Mens & Ladies Wear after her father’s retirement, and the Kiddie Korner Childrens Wear. She is survived by her son, Paul Green (Lori Scott) of Stillwater Lake; and her daughter, Esther VanGorder (Bill) of Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice Green; brother, Bernard Hoffman; and sister, Beatrice Sherman. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, Saint John, NB. No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to FEED Nova Scotia, SHAID Tree Animal Shelter, or a charity of the donor’s choice. Lieutenant Murray Hoffman of Toronto, Ontario, was killed in action in the Mediterranean theatre on December 17, 1944, according to an official announcement. He enlisted in the army in December 1941 and proceeded overseas in September 1943. A brother, Private Philip Hoffman, also served with the 48th Highlanders. There is a Star of David on his tombstone. Flying Officer Theodore Hoffman of Toronto, Ontario, was reported missing and presumed dead on July 30, 1943, according to an official announcement. Flying Officer Hoffman enlisted in the air force in June 1941 and after training at St. Thomas and at the No. 16 Bomber and Pilot School at Hagersville, where he completed the course with the highest standing, was given his commission on January 9, 1942.
