OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, September 15, 1939, Page 13 Evening Times Globe & Telegraph Journal Friday, September 15, 1939, page 12 Frank Hoffman Stricken Fatally Stricken with a weak spell on Main Street near the corner of Paradise Row last night, Frank Hoffman, 70 year old Main Street grocer, died in Wasson's Drug Store a few minutes later. The man was carried into the drug store after he had fallen to the street but he passed away before he could be given medical attention. Coroner Dr. C.L. Emerson was called to investigate and decided that death was due to natural causes. Dr. Emerson gave permission for the removal of the body to Chamberlain's undertaking parlours. Detective George Stubbs and Sergeant Young of the city police also investigated. The elderly man was a familiar figure in the North End of the city where he had conducted a grocery business at the corner of Long Wharf and Main Street for some years. She was a member of the Women’s Symphony Orchestra of Saint John, the Congregation of Shaarei Zedek and of the Sisterhood-Hadassah. She is survived by three daughters, Bernice, Mrs. Marvin Shapiro of Kensington, Calif., Phyllis, Mrs. Morton Civen of Seal Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Louise Milota of Saint John; six grandchildren, two sisters, three brothers, and several nephews and nieces. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, January 2, 1960 Paikowsky - At St. Joseph's Hospital, January 1, 1960, Jacob Paikowsky of 113 King Street East, son of late John and Jennie (Williams) Paikowsky, leaving his wife, one son, one daughter, one brother, one sister, five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral from Shaarei Zedek Synagogue on Sunday afternoon with service at 2:30 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. The Telegraph Journal January 2, 1960 A well-known Saint John merchant, Jacob Paikowsky, proprietor of Duval's Ltd., 15-17 Waterloo Street, died early Friday morning in St. Joseph's Hospital after a seizure. He had been ill for the last nine days. He was 71. For a period of 40 years, Mr. Paikowsky had been engaged in the hardware trade in Saint John and was well known. Affectionately known as 'Jake' to hundreds, his passing has been learned with sorrow throughout many parts of the province. Born in Lida, Poland, the son of the late John and Jennie (Williams) Paikowsky, he spent his boyhood days in the United States and was educated in Waterville, ME. He came to Saint John in 1919. Paikowsky lived at 113 King Street East and was a member of the congregation of Shaarei Zedek. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Harriet Gilbert; one son Morton E. Paikowsky, Saint John; one daughter, Mrs. Peter Hoffman, Montreal; one brother Isadore Paikowsky, Burlington, VT and one sister, Mrs. Charles Welsburgh, Albany, N.Y., five grand children, several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, with service at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.447.
