Rifleman Israel Freedman, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was officially reported killed in action in France on July 5, 1944. He was buried in the Canadian Military Cemetery at Beny-sur-Mer, France, beside Rifleman Yude Brownstone of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. Rifleman Freedman enlisted in November 1941 with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and went overseas in June 1942. He was killed in the fighting near Caen. In a letter of condolence to Mrs. Freedman, Company Quartermaster Sergeant B. Rosen, wrote: “Izzy, like other Jewish boys, had something more to fight for, a greater cause, and please console yourself with these few words. We over here are all ready to give our lives that others may live! It is a duty not only to King and Country, but to the Jewish people the world over.” Rifleman Freedman was born in Minsk, Russia. Israel Joseph Friedman was born in Russia and lived in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He joined the Canadian Railway Troops and was killed in action on October 28, 1918, at age 29. Officer Friedman took an officers’ training course in Calgary in 1914. His grave was discovered in the French village of Romeries in a Commonwealth war graves cemetery. He was buried with military honours.

Flying Officer Tim Pervin of Montreal, Quebec, was reported killed in action overseas. He was the sole occupant of a plane hit by anti-aircraft fire over Eindoven on September 22, 1944, during a rocket projectile and cannon attack on enemy objectives. Flying Officer Pervin joined the Royal Montreal Regiment early in 1940 and transferred to the R.C.A.F. in 1941. He went through his elementary training at Windsor Mills, Quebec, and was later stationed at Victoriaville. He received his wings at St. Hubert on April 8, 1942, and his commission in October 1943. At the end of the same year he went overseas, where he was attached to the No. 181 Typhoon Squadron. There is a Star of David on his gravestone. (See Veterans Affairs Canada web site)
