Private Jack Besserman of Toronto, Ontario, was officially reported killed in action east of Regalbuto, Sicily. Enlisting in the Canadian army in March 1940, he trained at Camp Borden. He proceeded to England on July 15, 1940, and trained there for three years. Rev. S.B. East, chaplain of the 48th Highlanders, wrote to Mrs. Besserman: "He died heroically, facing the foe. He was a true son of ancient Israel... I buried him in the cool of the evening using the Old Testament ceremonial provided by the Senior Jewish Chaplain. I hope to see to it that the Star of David is placed above his grave... one of the best loved and inspiring personalities in the 48th Highlanders...." Lance Sergeant Jack Faibish of Markinch, Saskatchewan, was officially reported killed in action in the invasion of Normandy, France, on July 28, 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Certificate of Good Service by Field Marshal Lord Montgomery of Errigal. Sergeant Faibish enlisted in the army on September 11, 1939, and went overseas shortly afterwards. His brother, Max, served with the R.C.A.F. in Bombay, India. “Montreal, August 8, 1951 - Earlier, we reported on the policy of the Department of Natural Resources of the province of Saskatchewan to name lakes, rivers and islands in newly surveyed areas in honour of former residents of Saskatchewan who had been killed in action while serving the Canadian Armed Forces. We furnished the Saskatchewan government with a list of Jewish servicemen compiled from our publication ‘Canadian Jews in WWII,’ the first part of which was devoted to those killed during the war. The announcement made by the Saskatchewan government on July 10 included the following locations named after Jewish men: Faibish Bay, after Jack Faibish, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Faibish, Markinch, Sask.; Levine Lake, after David Levine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Levine, Swift Current, Sask.; Glansberg Lake after Rifleman Maurice Glansberg.” (CJC publication IOI #1175)

Signalman Jack Gaskin of Montreal, Quebec, was officially reported to have died of injuries suffered in action on May 10, 1945. Signalman Gaskin enlisted in June 1940 and went overseas in October of the same year. He served with headquarters company of the Second Division. He joined the Black Watch in September 1942 and went overseas in 1943. His brother, Private Donald Gaskin, who had joined the Black Watch, was officially reported killed in action on August 8, 1944. Another brother, Private William Gaskin, served with the R.C.A.F. in Italy.

Leading Aircraftman Jack Kugelmass of Montreal, Quebec, was killed in a flying accident. He was in a Cessna training plane on a navigational cross-country flight from No. 4 Service Flying Training School at Saskatoon when it crashed near Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, one hundreds miles north of Saskatoon. Major S.G. Levi, M.B.E., officiated over the funeral rites. Leading Aircraftman Kugelmass enlisted in the air force in August 1940.

Pilot Officer Jack Lupinsky of Montreal, Quebec, who had been listed missing after air operations on November 2, 1944, was presumed dead for official purposes (R.C.A.F. Casualty List No. 1222) on June 15, 1945. Enlisting in the air force at Montreal in January 1941, Pilot Officer Lupinsky trained at Lachine, at No. 2 Service Flying Training School at Uplands, Ontario, and at the University of Montreal, where he completed his course in aviation. He proceeded overseas in October 1943 and was commissioned one day before he went on his last mission, November 1, 1944. He served with R.C.A.F. Squadron No. 428.

Private Jack Marmer of Toronto, Ontario, died of natural causes on December 24, 1943, while on active service overseas. Private Marmer joined the army in February 1940 and proceeded overseas in October 1941. He had been overseas two years before being taken ill. Two brothers also served overseas: Myer, who served with the Royal Canadian Regiment, and Max, who was reported seriously ill while serving with the Tank Corps. Private Marmer was born in Linitze, Russia.

Warrant Officer Jacob Silverstein of Windsor, Ontario, He was mentioned in dispatches posthumously in the King’s Birthday Honours List of June 8, 1944. W/O Silverstein was aboard a Liberator bomber which disappeared on October 19, 1943, on a flight from Gander Lake, Newfoundland, to Tockcliffe, Ottawa. It was the worst disaster in the history of the R.C.A.F. The 24 men aboard were on leave after service at Gander from where they operated against German submarines in the North Atlantic. W/O Silverstein was listed as missing in active service after flying operations (R.C.A.F. Casualty List No. 723) and later presumed dead for official purposes. The aircraft was located on the peak of Black Mountain, near St. Donat, Quebec, on June 24, 1946, and a special funeral service for the 24 airmen was held on the mountain slope on July 3, 1946. The St. Donat Village Council undertook to care for the mass grave. A Star of David marks the burial place of W/O Silverstein.

Pilot Officer Jack Spevak, of Ottawa, Ontario, enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in the summer of 1942 and was awarded his wings at No. 5 Bombing and Gunnery School, Dafoe, Saskatchewan, in August 1943. In September 1943 he arrived in Britain. In the early morning of July 25, 1944, his aircraft failed to return after bombing operations over Stuttgart, Germany, and he was presumed dead. His aircraft went down near the French-German border.

Warrant Officer Julius Spiegel of Toronto, Ontario, was reported missing on October 28, 1944, following air operations overseas and was later presumed dead for official purposes. Enlisting in the air force in 1941, Warrant Officer Spiegel trained as a wireless air gunner and received his wings at No. 5 Bombing and Gunnery School at Dafoe, Manitoba, in May 1943. He went overseas in May 1944 and had completed ten sorties at the time he was listed missing. His twin brother, Lou, served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific, while another brother, Sydney, served in France with the R.C.O.C.

He was posted overseas in March 1941. Flight Sergeant Tritt was awarded the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal With Clasp and War Medal 1939-45.
