OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, May 1, 1995, Page B8 POLOWIN – Peacefully at the Saint John Regional, April 29, 1995, Dr. Moses I. Polowin, B.A., M.D. C.M. and F.R.C.S.C. of Millidgeville, husband of Olive C. (Haggerty). Born in Ottawa, Ont., son of the late Jacob Oscar and Dina (Gordon) Polowin. Graduated from Queen's University in Arts and Sciences, medical degree from Queen's University in 1946. Lieutenant in the Canadian army. Moved to Saint John in 1947 and worked the DVA Hospital. Moved to a private practice as a General Surgeon until 1972. In 1972 he became the Chief Medical Officer for the Workman's Compensation Board. Medical Director of the Rehabilitation Centre in Grand Bay, retiring in 1991. Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Canadian Medical Association, N.B. Medical Society, Founding President of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum. Past member of Board of Directors of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, President of Shomer Club, Past President of the Saint John Art Club, Coach of the Saint John Wanderers Football Team, Member of the Jewish War Veteran'' Association, Founder of the Saint John Jewish Community Players, Layreader at Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, Member of the New Brunswick Museum, Member f the Canadian Jewish Historical Society, Member of Westfield Golf and Country Club, Member of Royal Canadian Legion, Member of B'nai Brith of Canada, respected for his weekly interpretations of the reading of the Torah. He was a 'Renaissance Man'. Surviving in addition to his wife, two sons, William Lee Smith and his wife Lois of Guelph, Ont., and a son Jay Asher of Vancouver, B.C., four sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Miriam) Petigorsky of Ottawa, Ont., Mrs. Daniel Abeles (Ester) of Buffalo, Mrs. Hannah Max of Toronto, Ont., Ms. Rena Polowin of Ottawa, Ont., three grandchildren, Lisa, Hudson, and Kelly Smith, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by five sisters, Sarah Polowin, Mrs. Lowe (Bea) Schaffer, Mrs. Phillip (Debbie) Swedlove, Mrs. Joseph (Lee) Abeles, Mrs., Lawrence (Shirley) Sugarman. Resting at Castle Funeral Home 'Hillsley', 91 Leinster Street (634-1700). Funeral service will be held from Hillsley Chapel, Monday, May 1, 1995 at 2 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery.
