- OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, April 22, 2003 The death of Mr. Benjamin 'Ben' Smith of Rothesay, husband of Joan (Wall) Smith, occurred suddenly on Monday, April 21, 2003 at the age of 75. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late Jake and Ada (Guss) Smith, Ben had been employed with Abe Levine and Sons Ltd. in Saint John for 30 years, from where he retired. Ben was very active in volunteering for the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, where he a member of the congregation. He was also an active volunteer for the Jewish Historical Museum. Ben will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. Besides his wife, Joan, he is survived by two sons Jeffrey (Carolyn) Smith of Calgary, AB, and Dr. Mark Smith of Ottawa, ON, three daughters, Deborah Pitt (Chris) of Beaver Dam, NB, Patricia Scheklar of Calgary, AB, and Isabel Frankel (Joel) of Toronto, one sister Goldie Johnston (Lynwood) of Johnston's Point, NB, nine grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Daniel, Leah and Rachel Smith, Levi Scheklar, Anna and Samara Frankel, and Rebecca Smith, as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Helen, and a brother, Morris at a young age. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. from Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506) 634-7424. Interment will take place at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Jewish Historical Museum or to Shaarei Zedek Synagogue would be appreciated. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, August 26, 2005 Smith, Joan A. - The death of Joan A. (Wall) Smith of 787 Prospect Street, Fredericton, formerly of Rothesay, wife of the late Benjamin Smith, occurred on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Moncton, she was the daughter of the late Harris and Olive (Steeves) Wall. Mrs. Smith was a secretary for several companies in Saint John and retired as the secretary of the Blood Clinic at the Saint John Regional Hospital. She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Smith (Carolyn) of Calgary, AB and Dr. Mark Smith (Colleen) of Ottawa, ON, three daughters, Patricia Scheklar of Los Angeles, Peggy Frankel (Joel) of Toronto, ON and Debbie Pitt (Chris) of Fredericton, two brothers Edson Wall (Claire) of Halifax, N. S. and Laurie Wall (Ethel) of Victoria, B.C., sister-in-law, Goldie Johnston of Johnston Point, N.B., 10 grandchildren, Jennifer and Michael Pitt, Anna and Samara Frankel, Levi Scheklar, Rebecca and Benjamin Smith and Daniel, Leah and Rachel Smith, several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one infant child and sister-in-law, Helen Budovitch (Joe). Funeral service will be held at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) on Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated.
