Marcus Dies at Age 81 [photo] The death of Hyman Louis Marcus, a well known Saint John businessman and community leader, occurred this morning at the Saint John General Hospital. A son of the late Joseph and Ethel Marcus, he was born in 1895, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, shortly before the family moved to Saint John. Following graduation from Saint John High School at age 16, Mr. Marcus entered his father's furniture business, J. Marcus Ltd., remaining with the company throughout his business career. He served three times as president of the Young Men's Hebrew Association and also served on the recreation division of the Family Welfare Council and as a member of the civic division of the Saint John Board of Trade, He was also a charter member of the Saint John Kiwanis Club and was a yachting enthusiast. The furniture house of J. Marcus Ltd. was established by his father, a Polish immigrant, on a Dock Street location in 1895. Three years later it moved to new premises at 35 Dock Street where it remained until 1908. Because of growth the firm moved to 30 Dock Street at that time and rapid growth led to further expansion in 1919, 1927 and 1928 when the business moved to the McAvity Building at 40 King Street where it remained until Mr. Marcus sold it to Woodhouse Ltd. As proprietor of the business, Mr. Marcus had a total of 3,600 square feet of floor space on five stories at the King Street location. In his early years in business, he travelled extensively through Europe, Asia, South America and South Africa gathering data on furniture origins and construction and later made practical studies on interior decorating with Ross Craine of New York, an authority on antiques and interior decorating. He is survived by his wife, the former Gwen Creaser; a sister, Betty Marcus of Denver, Colo., three nephews and three nieces. The body is resting at the Castle Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street from where the funeral will be held on Sunday with service at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Heart Foundation would be appreciated. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.362. Memorial plaque in synagogue: Samuel Meltzer - A2.
