- OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, May 23, 1927 His Death Mourned By Many Friends Large Number Attend Obsequies of Isaac Babb of West Saint John The death of Isaac Babb, of West Saint John, which occurred last week after a short illness was a great shock to his family and friends. Mr. Babb was born in Russia in 1888. In 1905 he came to Canada, and soon after arrival he started a business in West Saint John and gradually extended its scope until he was operating a large department store. He was well thought of in the community and popular with those with whom he came in contact. He was a member of Carleton Union Lodge, No. S, F. and A. M., and for many years was vice-president of the local Hebrew Association. The funeral was one of the largest seen for some years in West Saint John and was attended by Carleton Union Lodge members in a body. Mr. Babb is survived by his wife, Sara; four daughters, Mary, Leah, Helen and Annetta, at home; five sons, Abraham, Joseph and Isadore, at home, and Samuel and Louis, New York, and a brother in Brooklyn. The sons Samuel and Louis were called home by their father’s death, and will remain in the city for the days of mourning, at the home of Rev. A. Babb, 51 Summer Street. - OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, November 28, 1930, Page 13 Life of Louis Babb Taken in Crash of Truck Former Saint John Young Man Killed in Rome, N.Y. The body of Louis Babb, youngest son of Mrs. Sarah and the late Isaac Babb, 45 Duke Street, was brought to the city today from Rome, N.Y. where he was killed on Wednesday. Samuel Babb, a brother, accompanied by his wife, arrived on the same train. A large number of friends and relatives of the young man were at the depot to pay respect to his memory. Louis Babb removed to New York with his brother more than five years ago. He leaves, besides his mother, four brothers and four sisters, all of whom live in the city excepting Samuel and a married sister in Brooklyn, N.Y. Burial took place this afternoon in the Hebrew burying ground, Fernhill, funeral from Chamberlain's undertaking parlours. Samuel Babb told an Evening Times Globe reporter that his brother and a fellow workman were killed instantly whilst riding on a construction truck from their living quarters in Rome, N.Y. to a large school building in the course of erection, where the men were employed. It was a cold, windy morning and the men were standing in the vehicle with their backs to the wind crashed against a low overhead steel bridge as the truck sped along. There were other men in the vehicle but not in so dangerous a position and all others escaped injury. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.221.

- OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, December 18, 1937, Scrapbook 93 No. 1 Family Prostrated at Brutal Slaying of Aaron N. Cohen Was Highly Regarded as Citizen, and in Business By Nathan Dreskin Scenes of deepest regret marked the Cohen household above the store on Prince Edward Street today following last night’s tragic shooting. Prostrated by grief, Mrs. Cohen could not be consoled by hosts of friends and relatives. A telegraph was dispatched to a daughter, Libby, in Halifax, and she is expected to arrive home on the late afternoon train from that city. Two sons by a former marriage, Herman Cohen, Cleveland physician, and Joseph Cohen, Detroit, businessman were notified of the tragedy. At present time no reply had been received from either, or from a sister, Mrs. Jaffee, Cleveland, who visited her brother here this summer. It was the first time she had seen him in 29 years. Robbery Said Motive Members of the family and close friends declared today that he had no enemies and were of the unanimous opinion that the motive was robbery. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock either from his residence, 207 Prince Edward Street, or from Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 25 Paradise Row, no decision having been reached at present time. Burial will be made in the Jewish plot at Fernhill Cemetery. Rev A. Babb and Rev. M. Beshkin will officiate. Deeply Shocked Today the local Jewish community was deeply shocked when news of the tragedy was learned. A highly respected member of Jewish Communal life here, the late Mr. Cohen was like by all and took an active part in community affairs. He was of a cheerful disposition and had been in excellent health. He was a charter member of the Ezra Lodge, Zionist order of Habonim, and had been elected a committee chairman for this year. He was a member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue. In his fifty-eighth yea, Mr. Cohen came to this country from Latvia 35 years ago. He has operated the store on Prince Edward Street for many years. Some years ago he ran a clothing store in Bathurst N.B. His wife formerly Miss Leah Jacobson, a native of Russia. He is survived by three sons, Benjamin a clerk in the store; Joseph, of Detroit, and Dr. Herman Cohen,Cleveland; four daughters, Sarah, a nurse in training at the General Hospital; Jennie, also a clerk in the store, Libby, at present in Halifax, and Mina, a student in grade 12 at the Saint John High School; two sisters, Mrs. Teresa Jacobson, 611 Main Street, and Mrs. J. Jaffe, Cleveland; a half-brother, Louis Bloom, 41 Simonds Street. Myer Hoffman, head of Ezra Lodge, has requested that all members of the lodge attend the funeral service tomorrow. A special meeting of Ezra Lodge will be held in the Hebrew School on Carlton Street at 11 a.m. tomorrow to discuss the part the lodge members will take at the funeral service. Mr. Cohen’s son, Benjamin, who was employed in his father’s store as a clerk, was not working last night, it being his night off. He was notified of the shooting by a friend on his return home after attending the theatre. (Further information on this tragedy can be found in a separate file covering the events of this murder.)
