Alexander Duffie October 3, 1944 - March 29, 2023 The family is saddened to announce the passing of Alexander Duffie on March 29th, 2023, at the age of 78. In Ottawa with his devoted wife at his side. Alexander Christopher John Duffie Jr. was born on October 3, 1944 to Alexander and Rita (nee McNab) Duffie in Montreal. Alex married the love of his life, Sarah Goldszmidt, in 1972. Together they welcomed two daughters, Andrea in 1976 and Mychele in 1979. In his dedication to providing a good life for his family, Alex completed his post-secondary education at night while working full time gaining a Degree in Economics and his professional accounting designation. Alex and family had the opportunity to live across Canada, taking jobs in Toronto, Calgary, Regina and then Ottawa. Alex retired from the Federal Government in Ottawa at the age of 60, dedicating a considerable amount of his time doing charity work, including treasurer for Habitat for Humanity, King’s Daughters and Sons and helping newcomers to Canada seek employment. Alex loved travelling; him and Sarah had the opportunity to see the world together. They took trips that took them throughout Europe, Asia, Russia, South America and many Caribbean cruises. Most recently in November, Alex took the whole family to Mexico to celebrate his and Sarah’s 50th wedding anniversary. Together they spent winters in their Sunrise Florida condo, where Alex enjoyed playing golf and more recently pickleball. Family was always the most important thing to Alex, and he cherished the time spent with each and every one of them. Alex will be forever missed by his wife Sarah, his daughters Andrea (David) of Regina and Mychele (John) of Ottawa, grandchildren Jordan Heller, Sienna and Alexis Kitcher. Alex also leaves behind his brother Ross Duffie. Alex will be laid to rest at Jewish Memorial Gardens, 2692 Bank St., on Friday March 31st 2023 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Alex’s memory would be appreciated by the family.

Alex Polowin Tuesday, April 15th, 1924 - Tuesday, August 16th, 2022 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alex Polowin on August 16th , in his 99th year. Alex was a decorated war hero and proud Canadian Veteran. He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen Petrie and his beloved son Howard Polowin. Loving Father to Cary (Annie), Sheldon, and father-in-law to Anne. Cherished Pappy to Aaron, Lily, Jesse and Meghan. Brother to Frida and Gerry. He was predeceased by siblings Harold, David, Anne, Sheila, and Charles. At 17, Alex enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. His father, an immigrant from Lithuania, could not read or write English so he didn’t realize the paper he was signing said that Alex was 18 and old enough to serve his country. Alex’s bravery and service during the Second World War earned him many awards including the French Legion of Honour, the Atlantic Star, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Soviet Peace Medal, and the Order of Ushakov. He was awarded Canada’s Sovereign Medal for volunteerism by the Governor General of Canada for his exceptional volunteer work. Alex proudly represented Canada at the 70 th D-Day celebrations at Juno Beach where he was humbly introduced to Queen Elizabeth II, Barack Obama, Francois Hollande, and Angela Merkel among other prominent world leaders. It brought Alex a lot of joy to visit countless schools, retirement residences, and nursing homes to talk about his war experiences. For the last fifteen years, he has been a sought-after speaker for Historica Canada’s Memory Project. He was known for playing his harmonica for his audiences, just as he did on his naval ship during the War. He volunteered for over 25 years with the Tamir Foundation. In recognition of all that Alex gave to his country and community, the City of Ottawa named a street after him in 2017. This will help preserve his legacy for generations to come. He enjoyed daily visits from his best friend, the Honourable David Kilgour, until his passing earlier this year. Alex’s life was made richer by the warm visits, outings, and calls by his many friends and admirers. A special thank you to the Ottawa Paramedics, the Ottawa Police Department and Sergeant Marc Levesque for their kindness and empathy. Donations in Alex’s honour can be made to the Tamir Foundation. Alex’s Funeral Service will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue on Thursday, August 18 at 9:30 am. Interment will immediately follow at Jewish Memorial Gardens, Osgoode, 6549 Herberts Corners Rd . MATYAS, Ann Caroline 1948– 2016; Our dearest Ann passed away surrounded by her family, early on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at the age of 67. For 35 years, she was the loving wife of Robert and a devoted mother for her two sons Ian (Rosalinda), and David (Fauzia). Cherished Babi of Ian's children Camila and Mariana and beloved sister of Nicholas Bala (Martha) and Hugh Thompson (Vivien). Ann will be deeply missed by her nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. A graduate of Queens and Carleton Universities, she was a social worker at the Royal Ottawa and Ottawa hospitals. An avid reader, she loved literature and joyously debated novels over gluten-free biscuits with her book club friends. In recent years, Ann was passionately researching and writing the story of her family's Holocaust experiences in Czechoslovakia. She will be remembered in wide-brimmed hat amidst her perennials, grasping Nordic poles on treks through the Greenbelt, and with rosy cheeks and deep blue eyes on endless Eastern-Township ski trails. A compassionate, inspiring and loving mother and wife, we will forever cherish the blessing Ann has been to our lives. The family would like to thank Dr. Laura Hopkins, the broader oncological team, and the nurses and staff of Seven West at the Ottawa Hospital – General Campus, her family doctor Margaret Deutsch, and the staff at the Elisabeth Bruyère Health Centre, for their compassion and care. Ann faced her cancer with steadfast courage, dignity and grace and these wonderful professionals were a bastion of support throughout. A Funeral Service for Ann will be celebrated at Jewish Memorial Chapel (1771 Cuba Ave.) on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Interment Jewish Memorial Gardens – Osgoode. Bert graduated with a PhD in Physics from University College, University of Toronto, at the age of 24. After graduating, he moved to Ottawa and enjoyed a long career with the Canadian Government starting at the Defense Research Board (DRB) and later the Department of Communications. After retirement, he and Rhoda enjoyed further travels. Rhoda and Bert were married on April 12, 1959, and set up their home in Ottawa, with a three-year posting in the Washington DC area in the late 1960s. Bert had a great sense of humour, finding laughs in puns and wordplay. Bert took great pride in his role as "Zaidy" (grandfather), doting on his grandchildren, spending lots of time playing and napping with them, taking them to the park, and answering their many questions. Unfortunately, due to Covid travel restrictions and failing health, he was never able to meet his great-grandson. Special thanks to all the wonderful staff at Hillel Lodge for their sincere compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Hillel Lodge, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) or the charity of your choice. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 2 at 1:00 pm at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa. Funeral Service Livestream Link Shiva will be held at the home of Barbara Blevis and Shawn Marmer, 131 Wurtemburg Street, Apt 202 on Thurs. Feb 2, Sun. Feb 5, Mon. Feb 6 and Tues Feb. 7 from 7-9 p.m.
