- OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, July 17, 1944 Goldberg – Suddenly at the Saint John General Hospital on July 16, 1944, Louis Goldberg of 50 Mill Street, son of Morris and the late Ethel Goldberg, survived by his wife, two daughters, two sons, father, one brother and five sisters. Body resting at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King St. East, from where funeral will be held today (Monday) at 3 p.m. Interment in Hebrew plot in Fernhill cemetery. Louis Goldberg Dies Suddenly: Mill Street Man Passes In General Hospital; Funeral Today Many friends will regret to learn of the sudden passing of Louis Goldberg of 50 Mill St. which occurred at the Saint John General Hospital on Sunday morning at 5 o’clock. Mr. Goldberg was born in Russia, a son of Morris and the late Ethel Goldberg and has resided in this city for the past 32 years. He was a highly respected citizen. He had been proprietor of a store on Mill Street which he conducted successfully while a resident of this city. He was a member of the Hebrew congregation and active in all matters pertaining to that congregation. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Philip Simon of Glace Bay, N.S., and Miss Helene Goldberg of Patterson, N.J.; two sons, Sol Goldberg at home and Cpl. Mendel Goldberg overseas; his father, Morris Goldberg, Patterson, N.J.; five sisters, Mrs. Bertha Lynn, Mrs. Rose Newfield, Misses Ida and Rita Goldberg, all of Patterson, N.J.; one sister in Russia; one brother, Isadore Goldberg, Patterson, N.J. - OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 18, 1938, SB Series 93, p. 90 Jacob Jacobson Dies in 97th Year In his 97th year, Jacob Jacobson, one of the oldest members of the Hebrew community as well as one of the oldest citizens of Saint John, died on Sunday afternoon at the Roger’s Nursing Home, Charlotte Street. A native a Russia, he came to this city 53 years ago and early interested himself in the establishment of a Jewish Synagogue. He was among the most devout members of the Hebrew congregation and had held the office of its president as well as president of the Hebrew burial committee. He was a metal merchant and was one of the first Saint John residents to engage in that enterprise. He had built up his commercial venture into a substantial business. He is survived by one daughter, three sons, one brother, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The daughter is Miss Bessie Jacobson of this city. The sons are Nathan of Halifax, N.S., and Mendal of NewYork and Julius of Westchester, Pa. The brother is Harry Jacobson of Lithuania. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.257. - OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, July 17, 1942, SB 95, page 156 Mrs. Nathan Meltzer Dies Early Today Many friends will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Mary Meltzer, wife of Nathan Meltzer, 101 Paradise Row, which occurred in the General Hospital early this morning after an illness of several months. Mrs. Meltzer was born in Lithuania, a daughter of the late Charles and Helen Hains, but has resided in Saint John for over 30 years where she enjoyed the friendship of a wide circle. She was particularly well known through her interests in the Newfield Millinary Store, and was a devout member of the Hebrew congregation as well as being active in many Hebrew Societies. Mrs. Meltzer held membership in the Daughters of Israel, the Senior Hadassah Society and the Sisterhood of the Congregation of the Shaarei Zedek. She was also a member of the Local Council of Women and of the Red Cross Society. She is survived by her husband, Nathan Meltzer; two daughters, Mrs.Samuel Goldstein, Montreal, and Miss Diana Meltzer, at home; three sons, A. I. Meltzer, Worchester, Mass., William and Mendel of Saint John; one sister, Mrs. Morris Guss, Saint John; two brothers, Rev. A. M. A. Hains, Waterville, Me., and H.Hains, Moncton. The funeral will be held today from her residence at 4:30 p.m. and interment will be made in the Hebrew Plot in Fernhill Cemetery. The service will be conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and Rev A. Babb. He was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick Law School, and had a law practice in Saint John. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and was on the New Brunswick Film Classification Board. He was a past owner of Welsford Golf Club and a member of the Carleton Curling Club. He was a member of Congregation Shaarei Zedek. He is survived by his companion, Ruth Loeman; two brothers, A.I. Meltzer of Worcester, Mass., and Mendel of Winnipeg; two sisters, Lillian Goldstein of Saint John and Diana Abramsky, Kingston,Ont; several nieces and nephews.
