The Evening Times Globe Friday, March 14, 1941, page 11 Phillip Green The funeral of Phillip Green, 8 St. Paul Street, whose death occurred at an early hour this morning at the General Hospital, will be held this afternoon at 4 o’clock from Chanberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East. Services will be conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and Rev. A.Babb and interment will be made in the Hebrew plot at Fernhill Cemetery. Mr. Green who was a son of the late Asa and Rachel Green, formerly of Poland, was born in Poland but had resided in this city for 37 years. He had been ill two months. Surviving, besides his wife, are one daughter, Miss Mildred Green, at home, and three brothers, Maurice, Kitchener, Ont.; Samuel, New York; and Robert, at home. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, January 15, 1985 Benjamin R. Guss, QC, Succumbs In 80th year Benjamin R. Guss, QC, a man long prominent in legal and community affairs in Saint John, died at the Saint John Regional Hospital Monday after a brief illness. He was 79. Mr. Guss was a former Family Court judge and was a pioneer in legal aid in the province. He was also a founder of the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music and the Saint John Community Concerts Association and held many positions in Rotary International. Common Council, at its regular meeting Monday, paid tribute to Mr. Guss and extended sympathy to his family. Mr. Guss, who resided at 61 Rocky Terrace, was the husband of Mildred Ruth (Bassen) Guss. He was born in Lithuania, the son of the late Morris and Celia (Hans) Guss. He came to Canada at the age of four. Mr. Guss received Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees from Dalhousie University and an honorary doctorate of civil law from the University of New Brunswick in Saint John in 1981. He was called to the New Brunswick Bar in 1930. He was appointed a Queen's Council in 1952 and a Master of the Supreme Court a year later. He served as legal counsel for the Saint John County Council for 10 years, and drafted over 100 pieces of legislation on behalf of the municipality for presentation to the Legislature. He was appointed a Probate Court judge and subsequently became a judge of the Provincial Court's family division, retiring from the post in 1974. He also served as the Federal Court of Canada's regional administrator in Saint John. Mr. Guss was also administrator of deregulation for New Brunswick, in which capacity he reviewed the over 500 regulations in the province's laws and eliminated the regulations which were redundant or illegal. He also headed the royal commission set up by the provincial government and wrote the resulting report on which New Brunswick's hospital insurance scheme was based. Mr. Guss was the founding chairman of the Canadian Bar Association's legal aid committee and the first chairman of the legal aid committees of the Barristers' Society of New Brunswick and the Saint John Law Society. He served as chairman of the New Brunswick Advisory Board on Legal Aid. He also served on the CBA's council for over 30 years and a former president of the Saint John Law Society. He was honorary life president of the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music and of the Saint John Community Concerts Association. He was a life member of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals. In addition, Mr. Guss was a life member of the Saint Joh Art Club and the New Brunswick Museum and a member of the New Brunswick Historical Society. He had a long association with Rotary International, joining the Rotarians in 1937. He served as a director of Rotary International, a member of Rotary's world fellowship committee and a district governor, committee member and director. He was also a past president of the Rotary Club of Saint John. He was president, and later honorary president of the Saint John College Development Corporation, which played a major role in the establishment of the University of New Brunswick in Saint John. Mr. Guss also served as Dutch counsel for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, stepping down from the post in 1972. In 1972, he was honored by the Saint John Jewish community for his work on behalf of the State of Israel, and by the Boys' Clubs of Canada for outstanding service to boys. Surviving besides his wife are one son, Jonathan J.E. of Toronto; three daughters, Mrs. Keren Milner of Boston, Judith Guss Teicholz of Lexington, Mass., and Faith Guss of Oslo, Norway; three brothers, Abram of Saint John, William of Montreal and Jack of Toronto; one sister, Mrs. Ida Fransblow of Saint John; five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The body is resting at the Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. Interment will be made in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, February 10, 2003 The death of Mildred (Millie) Ruth (Bassen) Guss of University Ave, wife of the late Judge Benjamin Guss Q.C. occurred on February 9, 2003 at the St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home. Born in St. George, NB she was the daughter of the late T. Davis and Carrie (Sandler) Bassen. Mildred had received her Bachelor of Arts form McGill University and played a major role in supporting the arts in Saint John with her husband. Millie is survived by three daughters: Keren (Richard) Oberfield of Newton, Massachusetts, Judy (Eric) Teicholz of Lexington, Massachusetts, and Faith Guss of Oslo, Norway, one son Jonathan Guss of Toronto, one brother Dr. Frank Bassen of Manhattan, NY, one bother-in-law, Max Fransblow of Saint John, two sister-in-laws Lupe Bassen of Manhattan, NY, Rose Guss of Saint John, seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Dr. E.J. Bassen and one sister, Florence (Numi) Segal. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday February 11, 2003 at 2:00 PM from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506) 634-7424. Internment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Remerberances may be made to the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 2003.56.26.
