OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, September 18, 1993 Cohen – At the Saint John Regional Hospital, on September 17, 1993, Israel H. Cohen of Brentwood Towers, husbnad of Teresa (McCluskey) Cohen. Mr. Cohen was born in Saint John, a son of Myer and Bessie (Levine) Cohen. Mr. Cohen was a grocer, and owned and operated the Hillside Grocery on Somerset Street for many years, and later a grocery store in Sussex. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Warren Cohen and his wife Miriam, of Fredericton, Morton Cohen of Toronto and Robert Cohen of Saint John, one brother, Edgar Cohen and his wife Erminie of Saint John, one sister, Jennie Cohen and her husband Benjamin of Saint John, three grandchildren, Robert, Maurice and Mark Cohen, several nieces and nephews. Resting at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held on Sunday with service at 2 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, November 5, 2002 The death of Mrs. Bertha Rubin (Goldstein) Master, of Saint John, NB, wife of the late Robert Master, occurred peacefully at her residence, on Monday, November 4, 2002. Born in Saint John,, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Rose (Rubin) Goldstein. Bertha was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She had formerly been employed at Princess Dress Shop on Union Street, Jacobson’s Furniture Store and had retired from Dalmy’s Ladies Clothing Store on Charlotte Street following many years of employment. She was a volunteer at the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, and was a member of the Toastmaster’s Women’s Group and the Hadassah Wizo. Bertha was very active at the Senior Citizen’s Centre at the Saint John City Market and had a large circle of friends, which encompassed many age groups. She is survived by three nieces, Janet Stern (Alan) of Halifax, Roslyn Avery of Toronto, and Susan Shaver of Stouffville, ON, one nephew, Michael Goldstein (Allison) of Mississauga, ON, a friend, Darlene Woodford, as well as numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, her parents, and two brothers, Ben and Murice Goldstein. The funeral servie will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506) 634-7424. Interment will take place at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, (Fernhill Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Jewish Historical Museum or the Church of Saint John and St. Stephen Nursing Home would be appreciated. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 2003.56.31. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, August 17, 2005 Selby, Bessie F. - The death of Bessie Freda (Ware) Selby, of Germain Street, Saint John, N.B., wife of the late Lewis Selby, occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday, August 16, 2005. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Sarah Ware. Bessie was well known for her cooking show 'Cooking with Bessie' on CHSJ, she was a frequent personality on Morningside on CBC Radio and was a founding member of the barbershop ladies choir, Sea Belles. Bessie worked along with her husband at the family business, Princess Dress Shop on Union Street for many years. She was also an active member of the Sisterhood of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek Synagogue. She had a love of gardening, cooking and music. Survived by three sons; Michael Selby (Juanita) of Hornby Island, B.C., Sanford Selby of Saint John and Robert Selby of Quispamsis, N.B., one step-son; Allen Selby of Fredericton, N.B. and one granddaughter Shoshanah Selby. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at Brenan's Chapel. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Romero House Soup Kitchen would be appreciated by the family. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, September 7, 2005 Selby, Sanford Isaac - The death of Sanford 'Sandy' Selby, of Germain Street, Saint John, N.B. occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday, September 6, 2005. Born in Saint John, he was a son of the late Lewis and Bessie (Ware) Selby. Sandy attended Princess Anne and Prince Charles School, before working at the family business, Princess Dress Shop on Union Street, and later was employed for the City of Saint John for 30 years. He was a member of the Adanac Club, Outside Workers Union Local #18 and was also a longtime member of Congregation Shaarei Zedek. Sandy was also involved with the High 'Y', and enjoyed darts, baseball, hockey, bowling and calling Bingo. Survived by two brothers, Michael Selby (Juanita) of Hornby Island, B.C. and Robert Selby of Quispamsis, N.B.; step-brother, Allen Selby and his partner, Stephen of Fredericton, N.B. and one niece, Shoshanah Claire Selby. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. from Brenan's Chapel. The Evening Times Globe Wednesday, May 21, 1958, page 26 Harry Slovitt Dies At Residence Stricken with a seizure, harry Slovitt, well-known local salesman, died Tuesday evening at his residence, 138 Metcalf Street. He was 50 years of age. He was born in Saint John, the son of Benjamin Slovitt, 92 Princess Street and the late Mrs. Bluma (Brinder) Slovitt. He had been a resident of this city all his life. Mr. Slovitt had been employed with Holtzman’s Ltd., Waterloo Street. He was a member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Patricia Lachle; four sons Pte. Charles Slovitt, serving with Canadian Army at London, Ont., Robert, Daniel and Bruce Slovitt all at home; his father; one brother Louis Slovitt, Saint John; four sisters, Mrs. Morris Donovan and Miss Fanny Slovitt, Saint John; the Misses Lena and Esther Slovitt, Montreal, Quebec; several nieces and nephews.
