- Flight Lieutenant Hector Rubin of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was posted missing after air operations overseas and presumed dead on March 21, 1945. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The citation stated: “Throughout his many operational sorties Pilot Officer Rubin has proved to be a navigator of great ability, resourcefulness, and determination. He has set and maintained a high standard which has been an inspiration to his comrades. His fine example and determined efforts have contributed in no small measure to the excellent results achieved by his squadron.” Flt.-Lt. Rubin enlisted in February 1942, and after training under the Joint Air Training Plan was commissioned in the R.C.A.F. Special Reserve in the same year. He returned home in 1944 on special leave to visit his father, B. Rubin of Kamsack, Saskatchewan, who was seriously ill. A brother, Capt. Mitchell Rubin, served with the R.C.A.M.C., while another brother, Dr. Abe Rubin, was in the U.S. army.
