OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, August 18, 1963, Page 18 MELTZER – At the Saint John General Hospital on August 18, 1963, Mrs. Celia Meltzer, wife of Samuel Meltzer, of 560 Main Street, survived by her husband, four sons, one daughter, one brother, fourteen grandchildren. (In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Fund would be greatly appreciated.) The funeral will be held this (Monday) afternoon from the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, with service at 4 o’clock. Interment will be in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.200 / JM 997.122.37. Memorial plaque in synagogue: Our Departed - D3.

He enlisted in the army in June 1940 and after training at Camp Borden, Ontario, was sent overseas in February 1941. While in England, he was transferred to the battalion headquarters, intelligence section. In March 1942 he underwent commando training. Private Berger was born in Poland.

Flight Lieutenant Samuel Cohen of Montreal, Quebec, was listed missing after air operations and presumed dead on November 22, 1944. Flight Lieutenant Cohen enlisted in the air force and received his wings as a navigator in October 1941 at Fingal, Ontario. He went overseas and received his commission in January 1943. He was on a third tour of operations when reported missing in Holland. A brother, Captain Maurice S. Cohen, served overseas with the R.C.A.M.C.

Warrant Officer (Class II) Samuel Donen of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was officially reported killed on active service overseas on September 7, 1943. Warrant Officer Donen was ferrying an aircraft between America and Africa when his plane crashed in Accru, South Africa. His promotion to Warrant Officer (Class II) was announced posthumously. Warrant Officer Donen enlisted in the air force in Winnipeg and received his training at Brandon, Regina and Mossbank, graduating as a navigator observer from Rivers. He was attached to the R.A.F. Ferry Command at Dorval and made frequent trips back and forth across the Atlantic. Later, he transferred to another branch of the Command and ferried aircraft between the Bahamas and the Gold Coast. A brother, Norman Donen, also served with the R.C.A.F.
