Photograph with white borders. Outdoor scene. From l. to r., are the Eta Rubenstein, 10 years old at the time, and Adele Rubenstein, 6 years old at the time. On the r. is their father Leon Rubenstein. Between Eta and Adele is a mascot in a bear costume. The family is posing in front of a wooden house with a rounded door. Narrative: Eta and Adele Rubinstein are the donor’s cousins and Leon is the donor’s uncle. Sara Ostrzega, nee Rubenstein, was born on 1923-05-13 in Lodz, Poland. Very shortly after the war broke out, Sara and her family were forced out of their house and into the Lodz ghetto. In 1944-08, the Rubenstein family was deported to Auschwitz. During the registration there, she and her mother were separated from her father and brother. They only stayed in Auschwitz for three days, and were then transported to Stutthof, where a large number of people were needed for the production of ammunition. Sara remained in Stutthof concentration camp for three months, before she was brought to Dresden. There she lived in a factory building, also forced to produce ammunition. On 1945-03-11, they were forced on a train to go to Theresienstadt camp-ghetto. Sara managed to flee from the train and remained hidden for four weeks. In 1945-05, she returned to Lodz, where she found that her father, uncle and brother were still alive. Her cousin Eta survived the Holocaust but her uncle Leon perished in Stutthof concentration camp in 1944.

4 pages with a b&w identification photograph of Jakob Wiener stapled on the first page. Throughout the 4 pages there are 16 stamps with a Reichsadler in the middle, and 12 right of way (Passiererlaubnis) stamps. Narrative: The document stipulates that Jakob Wiener was born on December 3, 1907, in Krakow, Poland and that he was married and was a tailor. The official seal and signature of the police report date from March 30, 1941. The card was also stamped by the Jewish Community on June 3, 1941. The card was supposed to expire on March 3, 1941 but was renewed every month until October 3, 1942. For each renewal, there is a stamp of the Arbeitsamt Krakau (Employement Office of Krakow), a red stamp reading Passiererlaubnis (Permission) and a signature. After the ghetto was liquidated, Jakob and his wife were separated. Jakob was sent on a death march and was shot but didn't die. At the end of the war, he was liberated from the concentration camp in Ebensee. He then returned to Krakow where he reunited with his wife who had survived Auschwitz. In 1950, the family moved to France and waited for papers to immigrate to Canada or Australia. Because Canadian papers arrived first, the Jakob, his wife and their daughter Sara immigrated to Montreal.

Handwritten one sided note, pencil on paper Narrative: This letter was written by Bajla Kaminski (nee Bajla Podolcka), the donor's mother. It is presumed to have been written and thrown out of a deportation train leaving Malines, Belgium. The note was picked up and mailed (or brought) to the address written on the note. This address was the home in which the Kaminski family had been hiding before they were denounced and arrested. Bajla's daughter, Sara, was given this letter after the war. Bajla Kaminski was deported on January 15, 1944 on transport XXIII from Malines to Auschwitz concentration camp. She was presumably killed in Auschwitz.
