OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, May 23, 1927 His Death Mourned By Many Friends Large Number Attend Obsequies of Isaac Babb of West Saint John The death of Isaac Babb, of West Saint John, which occurred last week after a short illness was a great shock to his family and friends. Mr. Babb was born in Russia in 1888. In 1905 he came to Canada, and soon after arrival he started a business in West Saint John and gradually extended its scope until he was operating a large department store. He was well thought of in the community and popular with those with whom he came in contact. He was a member of Carleton Union Lodge, No. S, F. and A. M., and for many years was vice-president of the local Hebrew Association. The funeral was one of the largest seen for some years in West Saint John and was attended by Carleton Union Lodge members in a body. Mr. Babb is survived by his wife, Sara; four daughters, Mary, Leah, Helen and Annetta, at home; five sons, Abraham, Joseph and Isadore, at home, and Samuel and Louis, New York, and a brother in Brooklyn. The sons Samuel and Louis were called home by their father’s death, and will remain in the city for the days of mourning, at the home of Rev. A. Babb, 51 Summer Street. OBITUARIES: Saint John Telegraph Journal, September 19, 2002 The death of Ms. Frances Babineau of Saint John, N.B., occurred on Wednesday, September 18, 2002, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Carbray) Babineau. Frances was the last surviving member of her immediate family. For many years, Frances had worked as a dog groomer in Saint John. She is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Frances was predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Walter, William, and Joseph, and two sisters, Marie and Gertrude. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 2 p.m. from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, N.B., (506-) 634-7424. Interment will take place at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick would be appreciated. OBITUARIES: Saint John Times Globe, October 26, 1999 After a courageous battle with cancer Benjamin Cohen died Sunday morning October 24, 1999 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Beloved husband of Jennie and devoted father of Lorie (Mrs. Win Hackett) of Rothesay, brother of Sara Jacobson of Fredericton, Jennie (Phil) Pinkus of Toronto, Leiba Katz of Brooklyn, N.Y. Born in Bath, N.B., he was the son of the late Lena (Jacobson) and Aaron Cohen. Predeceased by one sister, Mina Rothberg. Fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was a gentle man known for his friendly smile and warm sense of humour. Ben was involved throughout his life in the business community of Saint John. He was the founding treasurer of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum and served on the board of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek. He took an active part in religious services at Congregation Shaarei Zedek as Gabbai Shanei. Graveside funeral Monday, October 25, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, Westmorland Road, Saint John. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum (633-1833) or the Palliative Care Wing of the Saint John Regional Hospital would be appreciated. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, March 9, 1957, Page 22 Ronald S. Hart Dies in Cleveland Word was received here yesterday of the death of Ronald S. Hart, former Saint John and Halifax newspaperman and businessman in Cleveland, Ohio. He was 50. He was receiving treatment for a kidney ailment when he died. Mr. Hart was a native of Saint John, the son of Mrs. Harriet Hart and the late Abraham Hart. He was educated in city schools. His first newspaper job was with The Telegraph Journal. Later he moved to New Bedford, Mass. then to Halifax. He joined the staff of the old Halifax Herald in 1925 and served as reporter, provincial editor and city editor. He later operated the Capital Shoe Repair Shop in Halifax for some years. He left Halifax eight and a half years ago to go into business with his brother in Chicago. An ardent radio ham, Mr. Hart was known across the continent by his call letters VE1M2. He was also active in Jewish community affairs and was at one time publisher of the YMHA newspaper which he founded in Halifax. He was past mater of Keith N. 17 Masonic Lodge there. Surviving are his widow, the former Sara Jacobson of Saint John, his mother, a son Atlee, a daughter Joan and one brother Wilbur, all of Chicago. One grandchild also survives. The body of Mr. Hart will arrive here from Cleveland by rail Monday morning. Funeral service will take place in the chapel of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue on Carleton Street. Officiating will be Rabbi Dr. Emmanuel Bennett assisted by Rev. E. Slotki. Burial will be in the Green Hart family cemetery here. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.497 / JM 998.61.498.

OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 10, 1955 Ill Several Months, Passes At Halifax Mrs. Rose Jacobson, wife of Nathan Jacobson, long-time resident of Saint John, died Monday morning in Halifax. She was 71. She had been ill for several months but her condition was considered improving until about two weeks ago. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hyman Selick, who, when she was a small girl brought her to this county from Lithuania. They settled in Saint John and after her marriage here 53 years ago, she resided in this city until 1934 when Mr. and Mrs. Jacobson moved to Halifax. During her time in Saint John, Mrs. Jacobson was a prominent member of the Jewish community, active in such organizations as the Daughters of Israel, Hebrew Ladies' Aid Society, and Hadassah Organization of Canada. She had an unusually wide circle of friends both in Halifax and in Saint John, which she visited, at frequent intervals. Besides her husband she is survived by one son, Samuel G. Jacobson, businessman of Dartmouth, N.S.; five daughters, Mrs. Sam Cavel, Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. Joshua Leiberman, 67 Orange Street, Saint John, Mrs. Israel Cohen, 23 Orange Street, Saint John; Mrs. Ronald S. Hart Chicago; Mrs. Maurice Goldstein, Halifax, and one sister Mrs. Harry Jacobson, 310 Douglas Avenue. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Her son and his wife and her daughters and their husbands accompanied the body from Halifax to Saint John. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue with burial in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.187. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 27, 2006 JACOBSON, SARA - Sara Jacobson of Fredericton died peacefully May 25th, 2006 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. She was ninety years of age. The daughter of Aaron and Layah (Jacobson) Cohen, Sara was born in Bath, N.B. March 22, 1916. Sara later moved to Saint John with her family. She was graduated from the Saint John School of Nursing at the General Hospital. She married Aaron (Ork) Jacobson and moved with him to Minto where she lived for many years. Predeceased by her sister Minna Rothberg of Toronto and her brother, Ben Cohen of Saint John, Sara is survived by two sisters, Jennie (Phil) Pinkus of Toronto and Leiba Katz of Brooklyn, New York and one sister-in-law, Jennie Cohen of Saint John. She had many nieces and nephews. After the death of her husband, Ork, Sara moved to Fredericton where she lived for the rest of her life. Sara was an active and tireless volunteer for the Fredericton Community Soup Kitchen and the Provincial Archives. The Archives honoured her for her volunteer work. She was a member of the synagogues of Fredericton and Saint John and a great supporter of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum. Sara was known as an avid, competitive bridge player and a fiercely independent soul who proudly managed on her own. Special thanks to Lyndsay and Debbie and everyone at 4 South West at the Chalmers Hospital for their kindness and compassion. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 28th, 2006 at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, N.B. (634-7424), followed by burial at the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, Westmorland Road, Saint John. In lieu of flowers, donations to the N.B. Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Saint John Jewish Historical Museunm or the charity of one's choice would be much appreciated. OBITUARIES: Saint John Globe, July 31, 1925, Page 3 Recent Deaths Isaac Levine Aged 61 years, Isaac Levine, 18 Chapel Street died at the Public Hospital, Thursday, while undergoing an operation. He is survived by his wife and two sone, Abraham Louis, formerly employed in Saint John post office as clerk, who was transferred to a clerkship in the Montreal post office 16 months ago and Bernard Daniel Levine, Saint John. Four sisters, Mrs. Ethel Levine, of this city, Mrs. Fanny Fink, Montreal, Mrs. Rebecca Kirkland and Mrs. Helen Dem, both of Manchester, Eng., also survive. The funeral took place this afternoon with interment at Hebrew Cemetery in Fernhill. Service conducted by Rabbi Blitz assisted by Cantor Mendleblatt. A. Babb gave a brief eulogy. Telegraph Journal Friday, July 31, 1925, page 5 Isaac Levine Has Passed Away Isaac Levine of 18 Chapel Street died while undergoing an operation at the General Public Hospital Thursday morning. He was 61 years of age and for the last 29 or 30 years had lived in Saint john, residing in the north end of the city. He was loved and respected by all who knew and his sudden death will be heard of with much regret. He was a prominent and life long member of the I.O.F. Mr. Levine is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Rebecca Levine, two sons and two grandchildren. The sons are Abraham Louis Levine, formerly employed in Saint John post office as clerk, who was transferred to a clerkship in Montreal post office 16 months ago and Bernard Daniel Levine of this city. The grandchildren are daughters of Abraham Levine and are Dorothy Rachael and Constance Frances. Four sisters also survive. They are Mrs. Ethel Levine of this city, Mrs. Fanny Fink of Montreal and Mrs. Rebecca Kirkland and mrs. Helen Dem, both of Manchester, England. Leiberman of 67 Orange St,. widow of Joshua Lieberman, occurred Saturday at Saint John Regional Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Saint John, a daughter of the late Nathan and Rose (Selig) Jacobson, she had been resident of Saint John all her life. Mrs. Lieberman was a member of Congregation Shaarei Zedek, a past president of Hadassah and a member of Sisterhood. She is survived by one son, Avrom of Waterloo, Ontario; three sisters, Lillian, Mrs. Maurice Goldstein of Halifax; Mrs. Ruth Carel of Detroit and Mrs. Sara Stender, Hollywood, Fla.; one brother, Samuel Jacobson of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and four grandchildren. A son Stanley died earlier. The body is resting at the Castle Funerral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, September 26, 2011 Beloved husband of the late Jeanette Sarah Urdang, father, grandfather, brother and friend Howard Urdang passed away peacefully at the Charlotte County Hospital on Saturday September 24, 2011. Born in Saint John, NB he was the son of the late Louis & Sara (Susie) Urdang. He has been a resident of St. Stephen since 1934. Howard and his wife owned and operated Urdang’s Outlet Stores. Howard was an avid fisherman, dedicated Kiwanian for 57 years and sat on several community boards. Howard will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Howard is survived by two sons, Stuart (Joanne) Urdang of Saint John and Lee (Jane) Urdang of St. Stephen; two daughters, Ruth (Stephen) Pearson of Canning, NS and Marcia Urdang of Kelowna BC; sibling Selma (Gerald) Cope, of Portland, Maine ; six grandchildren, Heather, Jennifer, Bryana, Louis, Benjamin and Sara; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 2:00 pm from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Following the burial a reception will be held at Brenan’s Reception Centre. For those who wish, remembrances to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be placed at www.brenansfh.com.
